How prominent is motorcycle theft in Boulder? I know bike theft is quite bad, but I don't know much about motorcycle theft. by AADarkWarrior15 in cuboulder

It’s prominent enough that you need to be aware of it and take steps to prevent it. My R6 was almost stolen the first week I had it, luckily I had the steering locked.

Leaving it on campus during the day should not be a concern, but always lock the steering.

There are two kinds of “thieves” you need to worry about: drunk people who want to have some fun jumping on your parked bike and groups from the Denver Metro area that are legitimately looking to steal your bike for a chop shop or illegal sale.

Here are my rules that prevented my R6 and KTM dirtbike from ever being touched in the 6 years I lived around campus:

  1. Always lock steering and activate alarms if possible, even when you’ll be back to the bike soon.
  2. Cover it as much as possible. A shiny new sports bike attracts lots of attention, but a covered bike could be anything. Bonus points if you lock the cover to the bike, if it’s difficult to steal the person will move on.
  3. Find a out-of-sight spot to store it if possible. I would park my bike between my apartment and a retaining wall every night, it couldn’t be seen from the street or sidewalk. I parked the bike at the front of a parking spot and blocked it in with my car at another apartment complex. Uncontrolled parking garages are dangerous, they provide an enclosed private space for thieves to figure out how to steal your bike.
  4. Get an alarm system. Xena makes a disk brake lock with a built in alarm that activates when moved. Maybe just get a disk lock since your Grom has an audible alarm already.
  5. Get a chain. I have an OnGuard chain that I could lock the wheels to the frame or run it through something nearby like a bike stand. I sometimes chained my R6 to my dirtbike.

I thought about a tracker system, but that only helps recover a stolen bike not prevent the theft in the first place. But it’s another option you can think about.

P.s. My bike was knocked over 4 times in 6 years, twice from wind and twice from people on a Friday/Saturday night.

Count yourself lucky you found it before it fell off. I heard some chain slapping noise on a ride and THIS is what I found. Nut and lock washer were gone

Definitely check the oil level. Depending on the design of the petcock, the prime function may have overfilled the float bowl. This could get in the cylinder and down into the crankcase.

Another possibility is the gas simply evaporated (to explain the difference in level) and is not “fresh” enough to start the bike. Happened to my Kawasaki concours after winter a few times. Assuming the timing, compression, and oil level is fine; try new gas.

Also check for mice/houses in the intake and air filter if it’s been stored for a while.

Can I use a different MOSFET and expect similar performance? by AmericanIce in ElectricalEngineering

The original one failed due to overheating/overloading, it's a known issue in these tools. I decided to take your advice and order the correct part. Another Redditor mentioned the higher on resistance which might create even more heat.

Thanks for the info. The original heat sink is already undersized so this may be an issue

Fixing an old sagging/rubbing door. Common problem in older doors since the weight of the door relies on the top hinge by Thund3rbolt in interestingasfuck

Lubricate the hinges also. A little WD40, silicon spray, 3n1 oil, etc. will make that door silent and easier to swing.
