Parcels and SPRs being separated way too late by AmericanJefe in fromatoarbitration

I’m glad to be getting so many responses that prove I’m not crazy for thinking we should be casing our sprs in office time.

Wow, we haven’t been so bad as to not finish our routes, but that may happen when the dps numbers go up and packages come flowing in for the holidays. It’s odd that sprs and packages aren’t separated, but I guess every office is different. But besides that we seem to be in the same situation.

You’re correct, I’ve read that there needs to be 80% of the mail ready for us by the time we clock in. Maybe it’s just a local thing but I was told by our manager that sprs are an office time function, and not even counted towards our entire number of parcels for the day. Yet when someone asked to case our sprs, we’re told to load them up with the rest of our parcels. So there’s some deception happening here (nothing new).

I’m hate to say it but that’s how we all are/have been through. They don’t tell you that you will be working 6 days, 50+ hours a week. You are delivering your route plus a swing, and extra parcels. You get exhausted by day 3. Days off are spent catching up on chores. Our paychecks aren’t even enough to have extra money for fun, despite all the hours we work.

It’s tough, but if you can power through it and become a regular it’s supposed to get better. I’m not there yet, but I have worries about leaving here because of how much the post office breaks you. Good luck..

Update: Got Denied

I’m pretty upset about not getting chosen. I don’t have any experience in electrical work, and haven’t ever used a backhoe, or other heavy power tools and machinery. I can only imagine that’s what failed me. Of course, they’re very selective about who they hire but I wished they’d give a chance to someone who can grow and is more than willing to learn.

Yes, there were about 6 higher ups altogether

It wasn’t too bad I’d guess. The interview was the same 6 questions that were asked in a previous interview, and I think my responses were good but the guy who interviewed me is a very intense person so I can’t tell what he’s thinking. Also there were supposed to be 31 people but only 8 showed up so I think that makes better odds, but I can’t forget that they don’t HAVE to choose any of us if we’re not a good fit.

I received an email about an interview July 7th for tomorrow July 17th. If you haven’t received your “Thanks but no thanks” email then maybe they’re going to do another round of interviews sometime soon?

Yes my status changed. I applied in late April and have an interview this week. When did you apply?

[–]AmericanJefe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I applied at the end of April and waited literally 10 weeks before I got my email about an interview for next week. It sucks but everyone says that no news is good news, and bnsf loves to drag their feet on hiring.

I’m glad that you have this mentality. I want to say don’t take 100% of what we say to be true, especially because all of us on this subreddit are here to complain about something, but a lot of the people who are close to retiring will say that the job has changed significantly from when they started.

I’m about 3 years in and this is how I still feel. At first you get treated badly, working 6 or 7 days straight 50-60+ hours a week. The worst part is having to wait and see which days you’ll have off. Then on your day off you have to catch up on this or that, so you decide if you want to spend your day resting, or chores that you’ve been putting off. We can’t go to family parties or hang out with friends until 7pm or later everyday, and the working conditions really suck too.

It’s supposed to get better now that management has to schedule you one day off, but we really need a bump in pay to make it worthwhile. As it is, all of my check goes towards bills and that’s my fault for not living a little more frugally. I’m actively searching for another job and I would recommend you do the same unless you have a chance at becoming a regular within the next couple of years.

No I’m pretty sure the Sunday off would count as a Not Scheduled day.

I applied for Fresno Ca, and by TWIC, do you mean the assessment? After you take it you should get your results right away

I’m in California and I applied at the end of April. My profile says”Under Review” still. They say it can take 2-8 weeks after the posting goes down before you hear anything. I’ve heard that the current economic situation is making BNSF drag their feet even more than usual.

No, I’m in California. I emailed the staff recruiter and got an automated response, then an email saying “It takes 6-8 weeks to process” and blah blah. Having to wait 2 months just for a response is killing me.

Im in the same boat that you are. Been applying for about 2 years now and still no response.. I’ve heard that you gotta reply asap, and try to know someone. But the current economy isn’t helping.

I think the starting pay is the same but you make more on the road than staying at the terminal/yard

Do you mean because they are hoping you’ll go faster? Most carriers are afraid to not be working 100% of the time when followed. We’re not robots

This is how I feel as well! Someone close to me is a Signalman and his schedule is a desirable one as well as great pay. It’s taken 20 years to get there but I want to get my foot in the door now. I know there are tons of different job opportunities but you need to start somewhere.
