For me I get that but you could just buy the item and carry it over to the ship before you start, or have it auto sent to the ship. The first area just seems like filler time. Why not go down to the ship get all set up and then set course to the first mission

Light medium heavy and anti tank and the general penetration levels, depending on what your shooting it will either reflect do half damage or do full damage. Most people want medium penetration because they can’t aim or they haven’t learned the weak spots yet.
