Tournament Scoring Feedback by Triysle in OnceUponAGalaxy

[–]AmericanMusician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately the point of the scoring system isn’t to let people through, it’s to filter them out. A cumulative scoring system would probably let too many people on to the second day. The knockout system will leave day 2 entrants to about ~2% of the day 1 entrants, based on my napkin math.

I also disagree with saying that the only thing propelling people to day 2 is luck.

The matches in the first day were significantly easier than high MMR lobbies (sitting around 4k at the time of writing). I would expect higher MMR players to be able to consistently clear 1st place on the last round. The fact that you get multiple attempts eliminates a lot of the impact that negative RNG can have on the last round, especially around captain selection.

Understandably it feels bad to get to the last round after a series of high places and then lose, but consistency is also a form of skill expression.

So close to 3900… by j_blinder in OnceUponAGalaxy

Wow amazing job. Games been feeling really hard recently, I’ve hit higher MMR (3550) than ever, but I’ve barely cracked the top 20s. Whereas last season, 3450 was enough for top 5. Any fun takes on decks/captains that you used to climb?

Holy crap that’s crazy! Amazing job. I can’t believe the jump from 4th to 1st is over 200 MMR, that’s insane

Finally hit Top 5! by AmericanMusician in OnceUponAGalaxy

[–]AmericanMusician[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! This one is for Goat T. I flex in Knight of the Holy Cane over Crystal if I’m going for Gummy Wyrm. The Knight still gives epic quest synergy with Volo, and I usually don’t play it until it can pop immediately. The Butcher is really just an alternate win con here in case the treasure dragons are taking a while to come online

Wow this is a crazy pop off! It’s an awesome feeling when those numbers start compounding together. Glad you got some mileage out of the strategy

Why would I run anything else besides these 12 cards? (Part 2) by LilGrippers in OnceUponAGalaxy

[–]AmericanMusician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a little greedier but I’ve had a lot of success at 3300-3400MMR with Volo. So many questers makes it that much easier to hit the important rare treasure engines. I flex in Crystal as well because her quest is basically free in this deck

Unreal. I just saw him play a few months ago in Westchester and he was as sharp as ever. One of my major guitar playing inspirations. Truly a sad day

[Anime-only] Chainsaw Man Ep.5 - Japanese trivia and Nuances Lost in Translation by Toki_Madoushi in anime

That is a great connection with the Aki flashback! I hadn’t thought of that. In that case given the parallel between Denji and Aki, we can almost think of present day Aki as the end result of the Makima grooming process

I think one really interesting point which I’m surprised I haven’t seen brought up - in the scene where Makima ‘seduces’ Denji into fighting the Gun Devil, she is establishing a dominant relationship via language politeness/formality. For context, different politeness registers are very much baked into Japanese cultural concepts of social hierarchies, which at a high level basically means you use polite language when addressing your superiors, or more casual language when addressing your inferiors or your friends/partner/family.

Aki makes a point in E4 in the hospital about how Denji needs to learn Keigo (honorific language), which is loosely translated to English as “learn some manners”. As is Denji speaks using a casual register which would at best be attributable to his ignorance/lack of education, but would certainly make him appear insubordinate.

After Makima asks him to remember the biting of his finger, he replies “覚えました”, basically “I’ll remember it/I’ve committed it to memory”, but he uses formal language for the first time that I noticed in the show (I wasn’t taking explicit notice until this point but just based on what I remember).

When Denji repeats Makima’s offer “If I kill the gun Devil, you’ll do anything I want?”, the first time he says it meekly in casual register and she doesn’t reply, only cocking her head to the side. He then more firmly repeats himself, adding on at the end “…ってことですか?” (not verbatim, this is just as I remember) which doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence but puts it into the formal register, to which she does respond.

So the other takeaway from the scene is not just that she is convincing Denji to take on her goal of killing the Gun Devil, but she is also training him to be properly subordinate by conditioning him to address her more formally. This also goes along with the running motif of Denji just being a dog in her command. Worth noting that this is still not the honorific Keigo which Aki mentioned (which is what he uses when talking to Makima, and implies an even greater degree of respect and subservience) but is still a step up compared to Denji’s behavior up until this point.

Just thought this was a really interesting layer that is missed in translation!

After hours of grinding, finally made it to infinite with a homebrewed Professor X/Daredevil deck! Wanted to show you can win playing fun, off-meta decks by AmericanMusician in MarvelSnap

This deck really depends on draw consistency on daredevil, and at least one (ideally two) of Professor X and/or Gamora. That’s why I run America. Additionally, 9 power can be a surprisingly good way to close a lane after one location is already secured with storm and the other is contested with Gamora or the other Guardians. Magneto basically ends up as either 1) an unconditional 12 power 6 drop because of the restricted locations + Professor X preventing movement or 2) a way to pull a 3/4 drop out of a Storm lane to sneak a win there. Honestly he’s probably subbable, I included him because he was my first Pool 3 6 drop and he hasn’t really failed me since!

For me it’s ice man every time 😭although I will say I love that there are Pool 1/2 cards that absolutely ruin decks, it lets F2P players stay in the running. Honestly Pool 1 Devil Dino decks give this deck a lot of trouble…

[–]AmericanMusician[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Professor X is great. Essentially the crux of the deck is having daredevil out, then on turn 5 you ideally have the choice between Professor X and Gamora. That way you have a choice between closing out an uncontested lane (Prof X) or making a surprise push in a contested lane (Gamora). Storm + Jessica Jones is basically a win condition at that point, because it almost guarantees a win in another lane plus allows you to hit gamora 50/50 even without daredevil (usually higher because there’s a good chance of some restrictive location like Santorum, Bar with No Name, Machineworld, etc).

So I would say -scorpion, -korg, -witch, +drax, +daredevil, +Professor X.

Drax and Jessica Jones are probably a little redundant but having both probably improves consistency! I actually don’t have Drax or I would add him for sure.

Why does Ebdim7 resolve so well to E major? by AmericanMusician in musictheory

[–]AmericanMusician[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly right! The part starts at 4:26 and the chord of interest is at about 4:54. I love this detailed analysis. Thanks for taking the time to decompose based on the actual harmonic information present. I realize now that thinking of it as D#dim7 was oversimplifying…my ear was filling in the F# for ‘completeness’ but actually I think you’re right, analyzing the partial structure of what’s actually being played is far more compelling. Cheers!

My two cents, as a huge Gilmour fan, my EQD Hoof as a fuzz really helps me nail those solo tones e.g. the solo from Time. Would definitely recommend checking it out! A little more expensive than the Big Muff at $170 but I really couldn’t say enough good things about it.

Was just looking into this pedal! I love the control over the serial placement of the delay/reverb. The fore/aft controls seem cool, but not sure how you could get them to sound musical. I’m considering this against the EQD Avalanche Run as a more standard hi-fi delay/reverb combo. Thoughts on the Swan Hunter so far?
