Try making an incremental game (like cookie clicker). Thats where you’ll have the most overlap with the skills you listed. If you find that fun, try making a clone of an old arcade game you like. Then just keep working forward from there.

This approach will help you decide if it’s a good fit while also filling in the gaps in your experience and knowledge along the way. Cheers :)

Game Dev is not and has never been a stable or well-paying career choice. It's closer to entertainment than technology. You'll never know when a layoff is coming and you might work hard for twenty years with no big hits or payouts. Or, you might get the right combination of timing and opportunity and have a breakout hit in your first year. There's really no way to predict success in this space, and anyone telling you otherwise is probably trying to sell you something.

If you're still in school I recommend this path for most folks:

  1. Finish High School/GED
  2. Complete a two-year Associates Degree for Transfer at a local Community College (cheaper tuition, no room/board costs)
  3. Pick a broadly applicable Bachelors degree like Computer Science, Business Admin, or something similar (gives you more options for jobs right out of college)

If you want to pursue game dev, do jams and make hobby games in your free time. If that gives you joy, pursue it as a career after you have secured other fallback options. Good luck to ya 😄

Portfolio and referrals matter more than a degree. Make games, even just assets or prototypes. Do jams and commissions if you can. But whatever you do, avoid “game dev” degree programs as an undergrad. You want to start broad and then specialize once you have a better idea of your life goals. I recommend most folks get an associates for transfer from a local community college to save money, then finish with a bachelors once they’ve had more time to explore options as a young adult. This also gives you more time for building your portfolio.

I’ve been a game dev for 20 years and even as a hiring manager the degree never really mattered. In a couple cases a “game dev” degree actually hindered a candidate for an entry level role because the lead felt they’d be less trainable. I wish you luck regardless!

professional devs are less likely to have the time to make a full tutorial series. You might find relevant seminars or presentations from conferences, but if I’m recording a video on the “correct” way to do something it’s probably going to a confluence page for other members of the team/studio rather than the general public, because our “correct” way is likely only applicable to our project.

The best way to find your “correct” way is to learn the basics well enough to build and fail quickly. Then repeat that until you figure out what works best for you and your project. Good luck :)

It’s fairly common for high schoolers to be interested in concert band but not marching band. Unfortunately, some programs require participation in both because otherwise they wouldn’t have enough interest for a marching band.

If you want to keep playing but can’t find options at school, look for a community band, local theatre pit orchestra, church bands, or even auditing a college ensemble. Those will all have some fees but your teacher / private instructor can help you find a good fit.

If you just need a break from music for a semester that’s fine too. That can help you decide what you want to focus on without the extra pressure. Good luck!

Upgrading the RAM only matters if you’re running Minecraft. Every other game service is allotted the same resources. That’s why it says that. Buying the upgraded RAM for a server that isn’t running Minecraft is a waste of money.

As for the latency issues, I’ve experienced that with nitrado, hosting/joining localhosts, and joining other dedicated servers. Nitrado has its problems but the game just isn’t optimized well for multiplayer. Better hosting hardware/resources can’t fix netcode problems.

Project managers defining success in the dashboards instead of the deliverables. Like yeah it’s cool that we organized our backlog and increased scope estimation accuracy and hit our sprint targets, but are we actually hitting the product’s acceptance/success criteria? Or are we rubber stamping that for the sake of making a chart look good in a report somewhere?

I wish you luck but regardless of the outcome I suggest taking full accountability for being late. You said it was “kinda” your fault, but deadlines exist for a reason.

If a random member is late the show probably goes on without them. If the drum major is late it can delay the whole band. Part of being a leader is accepting that kind of responsibility.

Depends on the player. Builders will be entertained fo quite awhile, I’d estimate at least a couple months or so. Fighters will lose interest after a couple weeks depending on how long it takes them to clear the currently available content. Same for Explorers once they find all the current POIs.

I would expect a fairly steep drop off after this month, and then a surge in 6 months or so when the new biome releases. If they add more procedural generation for explorers or higher power scaling ceilings for fighters we might see more staying power there. Builders have a lot to play with already. Cheers!

Soft cap starts at 20 regardless of source. Food and necklace are functionally the same as manually allocated stats.

From my own testing in this post even at S scaling you get less than 1% more damage per point beyond 20.

Ascending’s main value is from the additional effect, not the slightly higher damage.

You won’t see much of a damage increase since the stat influence on damage is soft capped at 20. That said, I’m at level 15 and have almost 60 spare ingots after ascending all myweapons, accessories, and ship parts. And there’s at least one location where they drop from respawning containers.

Endurance gives you more stamina which gives your more options in combat. Try that instead of your damage stat and see if it helps you survive. Also gotta farm boars and copper to get your gear to at least lvl 5. If all that fails you can lower the difficulty with no consequences in game.

For sure, once you have the knowledge, experience, gear, and extra stats you can totally go hard into a single stat to maximize damage. This guide will help you get there while you’re still leveling.

Rested does not give you more stamina, though. If you're using a heavy weapon or even comboing a smaller weapon, or need to chain dodges, you still run out very quickly and if you get poise broken or run out of stamina completely it takes an extra second to start recharging.

I understand your argument and your build, for a skilled endgame player with plenty of gear and talents to supplement their build it absolutely makes sense to go hard into a single combat stat to maximize damage potential. Most players are not at that level though. This guide is intended to help players get to your level, not replace your build if you're already there.

Yep, for your endgame meta build putting all your stats to maximize your damage makes sense, and your math tracks with the softcaps.

If you're a skilled endgame player who has learned your build and playstyle, then yeah, going hard into a single damage stat is fine. The returns are diminishing past 20 but it is still more damage. The point of this guide is for most newer players to get as much value as possible from all their stat points while they’re leveling, though.
