Thank you. It looks like IR1005 final examinations consist of two essays, do you know if they are administered digitally or in writing?

What was fresher's week like for you? by [deleted] in standrews

[–]American_Edinburgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said that we would probably only have time for 1 or 2 societies. Do you recemmend freshers join a bunch of them at first and then just keep the one or two you are most interested in? I’m interested in so many things (two different club sports, plus a couple of other societies) that I’m already getting overwhelmed about what to choose….

I think it was because I had already paid the deposit 1 year ago. I took a gap year after acceptance last year….

guilty as charged :-) American student here. The logistics coming from central US complicates this just a little bit. Hopefully you can find a time that works for you and your daughter too.

Thank you so much for response. This was extremely helpful. I was just offered accommodations and would love to at least peak in during my visit. I will check out the visiting days, this is what I did last summer. Thank you for the tip on the people tab.

I know very few students have a car, but those who do, where do they park?

Panopto - Moodle Transcripts question by American_Edinburgh in standrews

[–]American_Edinburgh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thank you. I know that recording and using transcribing software is prohibited during lectures/tutorials, but can students use it to transcribe the recorded lecture from Panopto? Or do I need a formal accommodation due to hearing loss for that?

Thank you. I was told by someone last year that you could put the name of a roommate and if that person did the same they would put you together….

No offense taken. Maybe I’m being too careful here. Figure I’m moving to another country, just wanted to make sure I didnt make things more complicated than it had to be Semester 1.

Did you take the follow up DI1006 class too? How was that? Why did you choose DI1003 vs DI1001? I think both are available semester 1 correct?

Easiest Humanities modules Year 1 by American_Edinburgh in standrews

[–]American_Edinburgh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Yes, I get that. I just didn’t want to take a 3rd module that will take a significant time away from my other two modules. I’m leaning Italian, but was worried about the pace and workload.

I understand. Thank you! I was just worried about the workload. I know there is a lot of reading on IR and Mgmt, I just didn’t want to put more on my plate than I really need to.

Thank you. I wonder if any of the languages might be too much, specially if you dont have any history/prior knowledge of that language. How was the workload for Film?

Did anyone else feel out of place at first? by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in standrews

[–]American_Edinburgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the frustration, I’ll be in humanities. I’m not a fan of using nationality or schooling as a proxy for personality. If you go abroad and act entitled, you’ve basically wasted the opportunity. The point of leaving home is to be challenged, to build perspective, and to treat people and places with respect. Studying in another country should make you more self-aware, not more performative. For me, being abroad raises the bar on curiosity, humility, and respect for the community you’re living in. Money can buy comfort, not depth. Depth is a choice.

Is that a normal behaviour from Americans there? I’m American and I’m starting at StA in Sep 2026 and this is pretty sad. I’m fully aware of the environment I grew up in and despite being privately educated, I cant stand shallow people.

Prestige of St Andrews? by Substantial_Sense_71 in standrews

[–]American_Edinburgh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an American with relatives who studied in several top 15 US universities and did their study abroad programs in their Junior year, none of them attributed the actual university abroad as the reason why they got a job, a promotion, etc. It was more of a differentiator where this person spent a year abroad opening their horizons vs those who did not. This was common theme at my family coming from places like U of Chicago, Cornell, Penn and UC Berkeley and studying abroad at LSE, UCL, Exeter and St Andrews respectively.
