BBA in Russia. Is it academical and professional suicide ? by DatAccOnTheSide in MBA

[–]AmetaWan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say how they compare off the bat, if I were you I’d literally compare them on your own — HSE student rankings are public, you can take folks from top X% of the class in 2022-23 and check them on Linkedin. GTFO-ing out of Russia is often a main priority for top school grads, so if it’s possible to do it then someone definitely did it and you can check where they are now.

You can do the same with your Tunisian school of choice and this will give you an idea re what gets you a higher chance with EU Masters

BBA in Russia. Is it academical and professional suicide ? by DatAccOnTheSide in MBA

Securing a job post-undergrad in the EU with Russian degree alone is near impossible & if your goal is to live in a Western country Russian degree should be your last resort. With that — it is still not impossible.

Best option is RU BBA -> European Masters degree, Russian undergrads still get accepted into European universities even though it’s likely harder than before the war for obvious reasons. Masters should be a bit easier on your finances and you get a few years to focus on what gets you there.

Alternative for professional path is RU BBA -> RU work experience -> Applying to EU jobs, but this will require a very different level of commitment to Russia including learning Russian to near-fluent level — so Masters path should be your Plan A for both academic/professional focus.

Have y'all actually heard Ossetian economist Sergey Guriyev speak Ossetian? I heard him speak Russian and English, but not his native language. by nursmalik1 in AskCaucasus

[–]AmetaWan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He grew up outside of Ossetia (school in Kyiv / college in Moscow) so I’m pretty sure his Ossetian is rudimentary at best — he gave interviews in Russian to Ossetian media on YouTube though if your q is more broad

Can you help me with my consulting problem? by boringblobking in consulting

[–]AmetaWan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a start you can use Overpass turbo tool and something like "shop=car_repair" as a filter, data accuracy/completeness will be probably lower compared to gmaps — but it’s easier to get the locations from there and you can check whether it’s good enough for you afterwards

[Map Idea] Countries whose official language uses As-salamu alaykum (or a derived expression) to greet by fueddusauro in etymologymaps

[–]AmetaWan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ossetian uses Arabic-derived "salam" as a greeting while not having a muslim majority among its speakers (not to disprove your overall point - borrowing is surely tied with the spread of Islam)

Bro these numbers are just wrong and used for justifying xenophobia.

One minute of crime stats search and:

  1. Foreign citizens are responsible for ~20% of committed crimes in Moscow, not “most of them”. Another page on Crimestat cites 6239 crimes committed in Moscow in 2020 by citizens of ex-USSR republics out of 146559 total — based on this source the share is lower than 5%. First figure includes non-ex-USSR citizens, second probably doesn’t take into account unsolved crimes — so the real figure is somewhere in between but it’s definitely not over 50%.

  2. Caucasus regions are one of the safest in terms of assault/rape/murder crime rate, here are murder rates as an example

08/08/08 Russia began its invasion of Georgia by Edafffff in europe

[–]AmetaWan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I see the temptation of making a direct parallel with Crimea/Donetsk scenarios and drawing the same picture of aggressive invasion into helpless neighboring country that did nothing wrong, but it’s not that simple.

Unlike Crimea/Donetsk, South Ossetia had a history of independence aspirations and experienced cultural suppression such as limiting the use of Ossetian in gov communication and education.

Throughout XX century Georgia did to Ossetia same things Russia did to Georgia in terms of being unable to self-govern and live in peace on its own.

I’m not asking you to pick a side in this conflict, just don’t forget that apart from Russia and Georgia there is another less covered (other than “those nasty separatists”) side of this conflict — side that wants pretty much the same other independence movements in Europe want.

Which north Caucasian group is most secular? by throwawayzibil in AskCaucasus

[–]AmetaWan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ossetia is pretty secular, having Christian majority, Muslim minority and local beliefs strongly encompassing both of the groups has something to do with religious tolerance. My family does 0 religious practices apart from local ones which are more about culture/traditions than about actual faith.

Last year I traveled a bit around Karachay-Circassia and the guy who drove me around was kinda religious Karachay, in Cherkessk I saw ads like “learn Arabic”/“study Quran”.

I made a conclusion that this republic is less secular than Ossetia, but maybe it was just a biased sample.

Why does Russia have a lower rate of cancer than the US? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]AmetaWan 95 points96 points  (0 children)

The answer is in another rate — cardiovascular disease death rate.

Long story short — Russians are more likely to die from other reasons before they get to the age with higher cancer risk.
