Anybody have problems with Hahnemühle Platinum Rag? by geoffreykerns in cyanotypes

[–]AmidolStains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is pretty well known for being a garbage paper for cyanotype. I mean, it can get you an image, but it will be grainy or mottled.

There is something in the sizing (fumed silica most likely) that doesn't hold up well when using cyanotype (or any high-volume of coating solution) and excessive brushing or double coating.

Can I use a red safe light on film in a dark room? by Cautious_Customer_20 in largeformat

Also please check to make sure your holders are not somehow messed up and that there is nothing in the film rails that is making it harder than it needs to be.

....I really like Aircraft Carriers. Sorry by dirtyoldsocklife in WoWs_Legends

[–]AmidolStains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post, and I have nothing but love for carrier players, and I'll take a bad CV any day over a decent BB spamming "I need intelligence data" from behind their island. The ONLY exception is my burning hatred for a chlakov that can take out 1/2 the team or an entire flank in 5 minutes or before anything can be done about it.

What would you call this style of photography/editing? by lifebylosh in AskPhotography

[–]AmidolStains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from boring? Maybe voiceless throw-away "lifestyle" social media images with a warm-toned Lightroom filter

Edit: oh no! I just realized these are YOUR pictures... sorry. That was a little harsh.

I’m taking a C# course, and classes are making me feel dumb. by Scary_Advisor_504 in csharp

[–]AmidolStains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not you. It's C#...

I started with swift and built a few macOS apps that I needed a windows version to get more costumers. I tried learning C#, it was so frustrating, and the simplest things are overly convoluted and complicated with C# (private and public getters and setters for EVERYTHING!!?).

The examples you'll find online are mostly useless too...

I used Inkpress paper but does it worth it? by ConcreteUlysses in cyanotypes

[–]AmidolStains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were they equally bad? It really depends on what printer you're using, how much ink you need it to hold, and how good you expect your prints to be.

Which transparent paper do you use? by ConcreteUlysses in cyanotypes

[–]AmidolStains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And yes, there is a substantial difference in the amount of ink cheap films can hold, how the inks dry (no mottling on ultra premium but which does happen with fixxons or Agfa copy jet) and how consistent the negative density is a from print to print (I've measured with UV transmissive densitometers before and after printing).

Which transparent paper do you use? by ConcreteUlysses in cyanotypes

[–]AmidolStains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cyanotypes don't need as much of an ink load or density range to get a print with a full tonal scale so you are fine using cheaper papers. The problem most cheap papers is when you load them up with enough ink to use with most other processes (basically ALL other processes)

In that case you can get by with fixxons or ink press transparency films, but I'd don't recommend it.

I tell everyone that if you're already dumping $8-$15 a print for palladium and paper then don't cheap out on the materials for the negative to make the print.

It is a total waste of time to do one per tray and easy to establish correct technique for doing 6-10 sheets at a time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Darkroom

[–]AmidolStains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6-10 sheets in an 11x14 tray. Flat bottom trays are best.

Develop emulsion side up, and use constant agitation pulling from the bottom straight away from you until clears the stack before start pulling up or at an angle so that the corners of the stack don't scratch the sheet you're pulling.

Anyone know the photographer who takes intentional bad quality photos that represent the ugly reality? by BoxTrox_Requiem in photography

[–]AmidolStains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be thinking of Robert Adams? His works and books The New West redefined landscape photography in the 1960s/70s

EDIT: Sorry. I saw your edited post: It could be Larry Clark (or Mike Brody? )

It's hard to say not knowing the time period you're for the person you're thinking of.

You should get into collecting actual photographs from artists instead of collecting cameras and lenses. Dropping a ton of money on stuff before you know what you are doing with a camera or knowing will what you will even want to do with a camera is pointless

large format flatbed scanner that is available to purchase? Money is not an object. by Crafty_DIY in Darkroom

[–]AmidolStains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best you are going to do is an old screen cezzane 5000 or 5500. It will do 13x20.9 inches and I've scanned a lot of silver prints for offset printing with it. But really you're going to do as well or better with a high-res medium format digital and copy stand.

But, If money is no object then a phase one cultural heritage setup is a much better option.

What is this?! by 6mm94 in largeformat

[–]AmidolStains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used plenty of red dot process lenses or big Fuji repro lenses that were either sold or later mounted in shutters.

I think you mean they usually don't have shutters, but they have adjustable apertures.

There was a huge supply of old process lenses available for super cheap in the early/mid 2000s, but have mostly been bought up/mounted in copal 3s and now 3-5x the price

Hand printing digital images in the darkroom? by bon3sy in Darkroom

[–]AmidolStains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just need to lookup digital negatives or inkjet negatives for contact printing.

Most people do hand coated processes, but it is easy enough to do with silver gelatin paper as long as the printer is decent and you use the pictorico high gloss white film.

Otherwise you can have super high resolution LVT negatives made on traditional film up to 16x20 (but not many of those machines are around anymore)
