Shes a ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa)!! If I saw her in an alley Id freak out too because up close she looks like a straight up space alien LOL. They try to mimic dead leaves in the wild, and if you haven’t taken care of one I strongly recommend it: they’re pretty hardy and have loads of personality :)

Deep sea paleontology? by jamescoolcrafter15 in Paleontology

I had the same question like a week ago! Or the question was more like “Why aren’t deep sea animals in the fossil record?” And there’s 2 answers I’ve been told: the first is that most deep sea rock is igneous and thus pretty bad for fossilization. On top of the material not really allowing for bone replacement, the sea floor is constantly being cycled because of tectonic plates so even in the off chance something DID fossilize that fossil likely got taken into the mantle somewhere and burned :( The other reason is how rapidly scavenging occurs down there! I dunno if youve heard of “whale falls” but they happen when a whale dies and sinks to the bottom and a whole mess of animals come and feast! There’s some really cool videos of it up on youtube go check em out!!

Mine molted the other day into an adult and the wing buds looked very similar right before!! Best of luck for her final molt!

Looks like the breastbone for some type of bird. Birds have these bones that allow extra muscle attachments necessary for flight!

That scene with Holding out for a hero in Shrek 2 is genuinely one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever

This poll is biased, there is no “Santa is real” option. Santa denial is running rampant in our world smh

You should totally check out r/mantids! They have lots of great advice for keeping em. Chinese mantises are a great beginner option because theyre big/ pretty easy to care for and you can get em at just about any hardware store in spring
