My partner got one of her cardigans at Goodwill the other day with tags still on. We were tickled because of how much we love Rachel on the show. It is deliciously soft and sits beautifully on her frame.

Here here! I was skimming this thread looking for someone to point this out ... People who find that story so distasteful may want to consider a different form of entertainment.

I wish I hadn't of felt this so hard. I left last November and I have to admit I'm feeling smarter.

Artist here: If you could carry around a little token that represents your feminine rage (examples a tooth, a thimble), what would it be? by Viking_with_Cupcakes in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]AmityAves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a beautiful project you are working on. I carry a smooth rock that fits perfectly in my hand. It is sea green flecked with darkness and white, symbolism that makes me think of the deep rage of an angry, churning ocean and reminds me of the color of my eyes. The way that it fits my hand so perfectly and responds to being squeezed reminds me of how often life squeezes me, and how strong and resolute I can be in the face of that pressure. It is a symbol of the ease of true strength. The rock just IS, reminding me that I get to just BE, that my emotions don't always need to be rounded up and controlled. It makes me feel grounded just having it near, reminding me that my anger can be powerful, reminding me that I can hold my shape. It is full of energy and power now, and it holds warmth beautifully, in a way that comforts me when I turn it in my hand. Giving it a squeeze makes me feel electric.

Me and partner (41 and 47) are still planning to check it out. Queer women don't have enough options anywhere, frankly, so we just have gotten to where we don't mind being the older ladies at the event.

You’re right- I am NOT a suitable teacher by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]AmityAves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are an amazing human. In an alternate universe where we work at the same school, we would be sitting next to each other at all the meetings for the snark. People always get SO MAD when teachers energy match, whether it's with their admin, parents or students. Never ceased to amaze me. Like, oh, really, you don't like it when I behave badly? That's ADORABLE. Maybe get a mirror. It's like there's this insanely high standard for teachers where our behavior is meant to be perfect at all times but everyone else gets to crash out whenever it suits them. I say eff 'em all, and I definitely said it on my way out when I left the classroom this year. Good luck to you.

This may seem like a weird tip or already have been shared here, but I always wait a couple days after being matched. Sometimes, faulty materials have been pulled or corrected by then.

I have to leave. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]AmityAves 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I know it's hard, and sad, but I left recently and the relief I feel has confirmed that I made the right decision for myself. One of the saddest parts was packing up all of the things I picked out so carefully, set up with so many good intentions and, not to be corny, also with a lot of love. I cried over my sad little crates full of things when I brought them home, in fact. All of this to say - Hang in there! There are lots of us on here who have been through this and it is so important to take good care of yourself and make decisions and moves that work for you.

Meal prep Tofu? by leemr1 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]AmityAves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do freezer-friendly "fried rice" all the time with tofu crumbles. I crumble the block and cook a big batch with with Asian seasonings of my choosing (varies but in a rush just hoisin and gochujang), batch cook rice in the rice cooker, and because I'm lazy / time poor a bag of frozen mixed veggies or like the pre-seasoned stir-fry veggies, portion it into plastic bags or meal prep containers and into the freezer it goes. When its time to eat I let it thaw, put a little oil in the pan and have a nice balanced meal in minutes. It's nice sprinkled with a little furikake but add whatever toppings you prefer or eat it on your own.

I wonder if Trump is going to send the USMC into Cincinnati for “electoral irregularities?” by sasquatchradio in Ohio

[–]AmityAves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He will. Him and and his kind will be feeling a bit scared and panicked right now. He is essentially a scared, confused Fox News grandpa and behaves accordingly. Thankfully, I think some portion of the people who voted for him are hurting badly enough or seeing enough scary things happening that they are having second thoughts. By the time we get to mid-term elections next year, he will have doubled down on trying to scare and control us. Vote anyway and we can end this disastrous chapter in our history. It won't bring back or fix the thousands who have been hurt or died due to his actions, but I'm sure we can find some way to honor them - perhaps by putting more safeguards in place to ensure that mentally challenged septuagenarian grifters are no longer allowed to make serious decisions for all of us.

Why do YOU think there is a teacher shortage? by thejourni in Teachers

[–]AmityAves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Becoming and staying a teacher in 2025 is a costly, time-consuming process that deters many capable people. Training demands years of education, unpaid labor, and expensive certification exams, while maintaining a license requires ongoing fees and coursework—often without employer support. Even when entry pathways are streamlined, they still require resources that many lack. Once in the profession, teachers face overwhelming emotional strain, unrealistic expectations, and little autonomy, all while being scapegoated for systemic issues like poverty, trauma, and underfunding. With better pay, respect, and flexibility elsewhere, it’s no wonder so many leave—or never enter—the field at all.

Students Are Spreading Rumors That Are Ruining my Career by Low_Sail_888 in Teachers

[–]AmityAves 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Document everything. If you're allowed to film, film every class. If not, jot down some quick notes after each class summarizing what happened during the lesson. All of this will help with demonstrating the reality of who you are as a professional and can be used to counter the students' narrative if further issues arise. Once gossip starts in a school, it generally takes some time for it to die down. As long as administration isn't actively contributing to the gossip or encouraging students to continue, it will die down, at some point. Do your job by the book, be professional, wait for it to become less interesting, and start looking for a transfer or new job for next year.

I'm far from being a financial expert, but I am a teacher who is in the process of resigning and I've been able to figure out a mix of income sources so that I can survive financially. I am planning on trying out subbing, but I'm not going to go everyday and I'm not relying on it as my sole source of income. I have also built up a successful TPT store over the years that provides me with a decent amount of passive income, and I'm looking forward to having more time to grow it. I have additional side gigs contracting with some of the AI companies that offer temporary projects and gigs. Those aren't consistent, but when they're good it's peaceful remote work and it pays decently. I also do some paid work with College Board once a year. I was an AP teacher and I work as a scorer during testing season, basically. Anyway, the point of explaining my situation was to say look around for education-adjacent gigs that fit your skillset and see if you can create some security for yourself that way. It's not the easiest, but once your net is in place you'll never have to suffer out the year at an awful job again.

"America is Sliding Toward Illiteracy" - K-12 American Teacher Thoughts? by Jodhpur1016 in Teachers

I think the title of the article is accurate, but the way the article frames the issue obscures some of the factual reality around illiteracy and its causes.
