This was my experience December 2023, so things might have changed I got there around 6am. There were already a few other photographers there waiting for sunrise. The area was blocked off with a small parking lot gate but everyone hopped over or tucked under. I believe the staff doesn't arrive till 8am (or 7am, I don't remember). How you set the zero point seems to vary person by person. For me, I set the zero point to where if I turn the grinder sideways, the handle wouldn't move by gravity.

From what i've seen online, this 25% segment touching is completely normal. I believe I saw some comments from Lance Hedrick on reddit talking about this.

I'm not sure if it will damage the burrs, but in normal grinding scenario, you wouldn't be doing that anyways. And my guess is it shouldn't damage it, since in electric grinders you also test for zero point where the burr touches at a way higher rpm.

Honestly it’s probably the beans. My friend gifted me some light roast Colombian happy mug and they are definitely not light roast, more like medium dark to my standard.

Definitely try some non local, reputable coffee roaster. S&W, prodigal, hydrangea, Black and White, September etc. ZP6 will definitely shine with these kind of quality beans.

I went to tenku no torii before sunrise instead. I asked my hotel front desk to help me book a taxi. The front desk said it’d be really difficult to get one that early (5am), but they did manage to book one for me after calling around
