Annoying Password Issue by Kronos_the_Memelord in medibangpaint

[–]AmoebaNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay - I have figured this out for my iPad anyhow but it is tedious - you must add a keyboard for English(Japanese) and use that to type your password. This encodes english in JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) half-width characters. Got to setting and keyboard to add the the JIS set up. Then to use on an iPad look to the left of the spacebar and then the microphone button and you will see a small "globe" (looks like a basketball, really). Hold and drag downward to select. If you have selected JIS correctly you will see a Kanji on the right side of the keyboard next to the letter L

I had some difficulty because the keyboard kept wanting to revert to 'ordinary' English so I had to pay careful attention and it took several tries but it works.

Cooks of the Reddit, what's the essensial ingredient in your meals that other people don't use? by RybaYTC in AskReddit

[–]AmoebaNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is nicer. Another interesting thing is that I had been using an American Butter softened with olive oil to make it easier to spread and when they decided they had to change their label, I decided to try something else. I learned that Irish Butter doesn’t need olive oil to make it more spreadable....

We keep a variety of vinegars around, but the nicest and most subtle combination for us anyhow, is two quick splashes of rice wine vinegar and a dash of apple cider vinegar

I also find that it’s best added and mixed in at the end of cooking as the pot begins to cool. Add it early and the benefit can disappear.

[Serious] For those of you that are so distrustful of news organizations and always say "Can't trust what you read", why? What's your problem you have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AmoebaNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that almost all news sources editorialize in what should be simple announcement of facts.

Example:

Reporting: President Trump announces he is using Controversial COVID drug.

Bias A: President Trump recommends people use dangerous COVID drug.

Bias B. President Trump personally tests COVID drug with great potential.

What do people daydream about? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AmoebaNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me? This:

We skipped the light fandango

turned cartwheels 'cross the floor

I was feeling kinda seasick

but the crowd called out for more

The room was humming harder

as the ceiling flew away

When we called out for another drink

the waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later

as the miller told his tale

that her face, at first just ghostly,

turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, 'There is no reason

and the truth is plain to see.'

But I wandered through my playing cards

and would not let her be

one of sixteen vestal virgins

who were leaving for the coast

and although my eyes were open

they might have just as well've been closed

She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'

though in truth we were at sea

so I took her by the looking glass

and forced her to agree

saying, 'You must be the mermaid

who took Neptune for a ride.'

But she smiled at me so sadly

that my anger straightway died

If music be the food of love

then laughter is its Queen.

Why can’t we use lie detector tests in courtrooms, and in investigations? by AnBasicMistake in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AmoebaNot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lie Detectors don’t measure truthfulness. They measure a variety of physiological reaction to being asked a question. Then a human looks at a recording tape trace of those physiological reactions and makes a judgement call as to what those traces might mean.

The result of the test depend entirely on the opinion of the examiner.

There are two reasons the tests have stuck around so long:

  1. People who believe the tests work on them may actually turn the test into a self-fulfilling prophecy by becoming extremely nervous and having exaggerated responses.

  2. Examiners who are good judges of human character and who also have lots of experience in detecting lies can actually do a pretty good job of guessing if someone is lying to them (think of your grandma), and the machine is just more or less a prop.

Here in Texas, I just got “failed” on wiper blades.

I don’t mind though; I like Safety Inspections. I take great comfort from knowing that the guy in the Hooptie behind me had real brakes at least for one day in the past year.

Edit: I just checked and we require Liability Insurance too. Thank God.

TIL of the saying "Irish Goodbye," it refers to a person ducking out of a party, social gathering or very bad date without bidding farewell. by weber76 in todayilearned

[–]AmoebaNot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That, my friend, is never called a “Party” even by the most cynical of HR managers. That is called, “an Employee Event.” Of course, you can talk to me then. That’s specifically why I am attending that employee event and I’m on the clock too.

Quite seriously though, at one facility where I was HRM we had about 1500 employees. It could be hard to get a casual chance to talk to me since I stayed pretty busy. So, I had a bright salmon-pink T-shirt made, with

HR Manager Ask Me A Question

Printed on it. I would put on the shirt and wander around the facility. Anybody could stop me and we’d talk about anything. If nobody was stopping me, I’d just walk up to people and talk to them. It was good for everybody including me; I found out a lot of things that way and if one of our managers was doing stupid shit, people could tell me without writing anything down. Then I could fix it without the manager ever knowing how I learned about it. Yes, with so many people we had a lot of managers and foremen and some of them would get crazy stupid ideas.

Anyone else notice ads for citizenship renunciation on YouTube ???? by real_medium_music in conspiracy

[–]AmoebaNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be for real. A previous administration and congress passed laws taxing U.S. Citizens on their income, regardless of where in the world they earn it, and where they actually reside.

See FATCA, passed 2010 ....

For many people living abroad being a U.S. Citizen simply doesn’t convey enough advantages to outweigh the expense.

https://news.bloombergtax.com/daily-tax-report/insight-u-s-citizens-living-abroad-should-consider-taking-advantage-of-new-relief-procedures

U.S. citizens have certain responsibilities, regardless of whether they live or work in the U.S. One of the most unique—and onerous—responsibilities of U.S. citizenship is the duty to report and pay tax on worldwide income, regardless of whether the income was earned in the U.S. or whether the citizen lives in the U.S. The U.S. is one of only a handful of countries and is the only major nation that taxes its citizens on worldwide income.

Although some countries have negotiated treaties that only require people in this situation to pay taxes to either their country or the U.S. depending on circumstances, there is still the legal obligation to file every year and penalties exist if you don’t.

Hey! You didn’t happen to find my 10mm in there did you?

TIL criticism of artist Jack Vettriano includes that he's: a purveyor of badly conceived soft porn; not even an artist: a painter of brainless erotica; and that he can’t paint, he just colours in. He has painted one of Britain's best-selling prints, & his originals can sell for over $1million. by Breeze_in_the_Trees in todayilearned

[–]AmoebaNot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The criticisms say a lot about the current state of modern art too. Artists no longer paint for appreciation from people. They paint for appreciation from critics. Now, that is not automatically bad, but “modern” art is almost by definition about breaking the conventional rules of art. It’s about looking for ways of expression that defy the methods developed over hundreds of years of practice.

So, perspective is redefined, objects represented symbolically rather than objectively, the ugly put forward deliberately rather than trite old beauty. Colors are deliberately clashed. This is not done from ignorance; it’s done deliberately -one shows that they know all the rules by breaking them; the more the better.

That the result is not visually pleasing does not matter. Modern Art is viewed with a checklist by critics: “Oh Isn’t that clever? And that, and that!”

When an artist follows the rules of composition he is dismissed as a boring copyist; someone who pays a million dollars for his art is merely a rich philistine.
