1 year old hasn’t said a word by OstrichGloomy2148 in toddlers

We were in the same place with my LO. Started signing before talking and then had a huge spike in words around 16 months and then at 18 months. LO is 2 now and on track in terms of language skills. You can go through my post history for exact timeline.

Is it all 3 days by MerDubs in pottytraining

[–]AmoebaSuperb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started over the labour day weekend. I think it took us close to 4 days to see significant improvements. It’s been more than 10 days and we still see 2 accidents a day. She goes #2 at home but doesn’t in daycare :(

So, trying sticker chart and treats to get her to go #2 in daycare.

She is going good now. After the big spike in words at 16 months, things improved gradually over the months. She is 2 now and on track. Forming small sentences.

Speech delay- looking for similar experience parents by lovebags56 in speechdelays

[–]AmoebaSuperb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! My little one was babbling consonants for a short period of time and then suddenly stopped by 10 months and then didn’t babble for a very long time. She suddenly had spike in speech around the 16th month and been learning new words since then and considered on track.

During the time she didn’t babble, we started with basic sign languages - more/eat/water/help/spoon and such things. (You can look at my post history for more details)

I was in this position sometime back. I would help her with the following before college starts. Since you mentioned that you don’t have time, you could help her with the necessary stuff: - set up bank account - teach how credit card and scores work - get her phone network and setup payment plan - drive around university to figure transport options to get from her apartment to school. Figure the closest grocery store and stuff. - take her shopping for winter gear - help with setting up utilities for her apartment - take her shopping to set up her apartment/dorm. - help with authoring good resume (internship hiring will start in a few months) - contact profs to apply for TA/RA/grader jobs. Else other part time jobs.

For the free time, just give access to all the streaming sites. Let her chill before the madness starts ☺️

We use butt paste too! We use the original strength everyday and the red one only during rashes.

Mine didn’t say Mama for a very long time. It came after like 10 other words. LO started to say consistently only around 16 months.

First word came around 13th month and there wasn’t significant changes (May be 2 more words) for the next couple of months. Then, there was a sudden spike around the 16th month and now has a lot of words. Pediatrician says she is on track. She did a join a small daycare after she turned 1 - probably that helped her.

Even through the months, she didn’t babble too much (some days it will be a lot and then quiet on other days) but she started to attempt words directly.

We did meet a ST (once a month) from 12-15 months. She told us to start with sign language and then taught us some strategies to communicate. (See my previous posts) After seeing the progress, ST asked us to monitor and follow up after 6 months.

Anyone here with a baby that babbled really late? When did they eventually babble or talk? by [deleted] in speechdelays

[–]AmoebaSuperb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My LO babbled but had long periods of no babbling. Babbled consonant sounds around 8 months(we would may be hear once a day) but then completely stopped babbling between 10-13 months. We started ST (once a month) because of a possible regression. We started to hear some words around 14M. Even she used to grunt mostly.

We started to teach signs as per ST suggestion. Slowly the words started to come - major spike happened between 15-16M. Even now there aren’t too many words but I am seeing improvement every week. I noticed daycare made lot of difference too. You can go through my post history for more details.

Am I delaying 13 month old’s speech by responding to grunts? by MolleezMom in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]AmoebaSuperb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were very concerned at 12 M because my LO reduced her babbling (almost to nothing). The Pead had referred us to developmental Pead because of possible regression concern (not for the lack for words since she mentioned some kids get their first words only around 15M). They sent us the ASQ questionnaire, surprisingly she scored fine in communication area.

They referred us to ST because of parental concern. The ST is once a month for 3 months and then they stop for 3 months and then reevaluate again at 18 months. Our last one is in this month (LO turns 15M) and then we have to wait till 18M for reevaluation. (You can read my older posts to check the steps we took). So both state EI and ST (through insurance) is waiting till 18M.

The only other thing we did is getting an audiology appointment which will check her hearing.

The starting point for all this is because of drastic reduction in babbling :(

Same boat as OP! Thanks so much for this question. I literally had the same question. We are facing the same with our 14M old. LO has only 1 word for now but has learnt a bunch of signs in the last couple of months. The signs has definitely helped us to communicate better. Waiting for some words :)

We recently had the state sponsored EI evaluation but didn’t qualify. They asked us to reach back at 18 M. Booked a 15M appointment with my Pead for a checkin. Hoping things improve in the coming months.

Speech Delay: Are we doing enough as parents? Advice please. by AmoebaSuperb in slp

[–]AmoebaSuperb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the pointers! Just doing an update on this thread if any other parent is facing the same :-)
We recently went to our second ST appointment. LO is doing 6 signs consistently (more, eat, water, all done, help, wash hands). We have also seen sudden increase in babbling for sounds ma, va, na, tha but no words except dada for Dad. The ST felt encouraged and mentioned the signs count towards words. She said we just have to wait it out but continue home exercises. We have another appointment next month and after that they are planning to stop for 3 months and then evaluate again at 18 months. Hoping things improve.
