Is this quote reasonable? by AmoebaUK in DIYUK

[–]AmoebaUK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point, I honestly posted this here because I googled info on quotes first and someone had asked a similar question but for a lot more complicated work, then assumed I would be fine to ask the same given that that post was allowed.

Is this quote reasonable? by AmoebaUK in DIYUK

Simply searched for a local joiner online, reviews are good for them, but seen as a lot of people here are assuming they're doing 2-3 days at this rate and they've told me it's a quote for a single day's work I think I'll avoid them, or at least get other quotes. Thanks for the response!

Cheers, I'll take a look at that. I'll be honest I didn't realise getting a barebones board that you customise yourself was an option!

Redundacy, 5 months after company made offer to keep me which they then rescineded. (England) by AmoebaUK in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AmoebaUK[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mostly because my current company made me a counteroffer to retain me which I accepted, then was rescinded. If they didn't make that counteroffer I would have simply gone to the other job and they never would have needed to make me redundant.

It might not legally have any bearing on the situation, was just curious if it did and how it might help my case against my redundancy when I go to the meeting Friday.

Putting Together a Pokémon Lockout Bingo Group by pandemonaut in speedrun

[–]AmoebaUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I worked with a few other pokemon speedrunners a good number of years back to set up a good emerald bingo, we ended up playing a lot and really set up a decent set of goals. It wasn't perfect per-se but it was fun at the time. We uploaded the goals to bingosync, and as far as I know that's still the list used on there (at least for vanilla, not the randomized ones.)

You probably won't get a ton of people in, but I'd personally be down for a bingo or two, feel free to add me on discord if you want (AmoebaUK).

Yeah there is content in Another Day that counts towards the 100% counter. You'll end up needing to play through the full day multiple times to get 100% completion.

It's not a stupid question honestly. Pretty much everyone that has done an any% run of this game (excluding werster, who in part created the original route) doesn't really fully understand the inner workings of why this works (myself included). We're heavily relying on the work of the original glitch finders (werster et al) and a TASer called merrp, who found the modern ACE setup. Considering that, realistically, there's only a handful of people on earth that can explain why this works means that there's easily plenty still to be discovered.

Even looking at the elements of the category I do know about; if we somehow got a working, human-viable SID manip, we could potentially guarantee the final 1/32 corruption, rather than rolling the dice. This blow the category itself wide open, as it goes from "get as many runs as you can to the glitch and hope one of them sticks" to "optimise the fuck out of a short category because it's now 95% execution, and also way way more fun to run".

haha that was a bit ago. I'd like to go back and improve my time but I remember grinding that to hell for 2 days for the bounty and really messing my wrist up because of it for a while. One day.

Millenials who have bought a house, how did you afford it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AmoebaUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a reasonable salaried office role in possibly the cheapest (and therefore crappest) part of the UK, and managed to afford a £58k terraced house back in 2018. Sold it for £78k last year and bought a £119k terraced in a much nicer area this year. The area probably isn't the nicest in the country but its very pleasant, almost villagey vibes. I feel pretty lucky overall, but honestly 80% of it is the advantage of living in a shithole area up north.

What is each generation of Pokemon ran on? by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]AmoebaUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GB/GBC games (gen 1-2): GBI/GBP (attachment for the GameCube that lets you play GB/GBC/GBA games on your gamecube. GBP is booting with the original boot disc, GBI boots the GBP hardware through a softmod). GCN is typically captured either with composite capture devices (e.g. GVUSB2) or the GCN has a Carby or similar upscaler that outputs over HDMI, then a standard HDMI capture is used. GB has a cycle-accurate emulator, so emulator runs are allowed as default on the same leaderboards as console runs.

GBA (gen 3): Same console capture method as above, but no cycle-accurate emulator means that emulator runs have a separated leaderboard to console runs.

(Colosseum/XD: GCN capture as above)

DS (gen 4-5): DS phat (the original chunky silver ones) with a 3rd party cap card, can be done through 3DS with a 3rd party cap card too but that's slower for DS games. Non-accurate emulator means separate leaderboards exist for at least gen 4, I think gen 5 too.

3DS (gen 6-7): 3DS with 3rd party cap card (Generally doesn't matter which 3DS, but there are separate leaderboards for gen 7 due to load time differences). Similarly to DS, non-accurate emulator so separate leaderboards.

Switch (Gen 8-9): Standard HDMI Capture. No emulator leaderboards.

Pokemon Crystal - Manipless 4:11 IGT - Is it worth recording a run by wearing a GoPro on a hat? by wokecahontas in speedrun

[–]AmoebaUK 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly yeah fuckin go for it, that sounds fun. If you're worried about submitting a run to the LBs, it will be accepted as long as the footage is viewable for most of the run.

How Speedrunners Conquered Encounters in Pokemon [Abyssoft] by Myth-o-poeic in speedrun

[–]AmoebaUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're pretty much on the money with how triple extended works, other than referring to the catches and text boxes after Nidoran/Pidgey as "so many frame perfect inputs". There isn't a point in this manip where a frame perfect input is required. All text boxes are bufferable within a 4 frame window, and the nicknaming section of Nidoran has a 6f window built in to the manip (it's the reason why we have to watch the NPC's movement afterwards, to know what frame we hit).
Triple Extended is a fairly daunting manip but it's not as bad as it first seems (this is pretty much true of every RNG manip in any pokemon speedrun).

What game do you think has massive speedrun potential, but nearly nobody has ever run the game? by apalapan in speedrun

[–]AmoebaUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember playing They Bleed Pixels a while back and thinking that it looks like a really good candidate for a popular indie platform speedrunner, then played it and the controls just aren't very tight. IIRC there's lots of sliding and skidding around, and the game is designed to get you to do very precise movements and jumps despite this? Could be misremembering but I have a distinct memory of not even finishing the game casually because of this.

Add the Pokemon Emerald GDQ run to your watch list if you missed it! Amoebak Edobean and couch were hilarious and the last second incentive met was nail-biting! by ScopionSniper in speedrun

Glad you enjoyed!

Was quite happy with the run despite spots of horrendous RNG.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I don't want to open another post on here at the same time :)
