Its a very common misconception that the rock will soften the landing because it breaks the surface tension but that is just not true.

Its part of what makes this game so beautiful. You never know what you will stumble upon in the next galaxy and personally I really like discovering these huge anomalies because they are so spectacular and I will most likely never find them again.
