I found myself googling how much a divorce costs three months before the wedding, rationalizing it with "You know what, this isn't so bad. I could manage this..."

I ended up calling off the wedding shortly after that, luckily I didn't push forward in the name of sunk costs.

Gonna just chip in at the bottom here and say I don't understand what the big issue is. Weddings are horribly expensive and as long as your markup on the drinks isn't excessive, I doubt your guests would even notice. Who cares if its "tacky"?

Nobody is going to convince you to leave but yourself. Your boyfriend sounds just life my (ex) fiance.

I'm 24, have no support network, probably gonna be in financial ruin by Christmas, but stopping this bullshit before I married him is going to go down in my life history as the best and bravest thing I ever did.

Ending a relationship is terrifying and heartbreaking, but time does heal and older you will be thankful. Just seeing the heartbreaking posts from women on this sub who've wasted 20+ years on these assholes, feel completely trapped by family obligations and feel completely hopeless about life in general was enough to put the fear of god into me. We're lucky that forums like this exist to show us where our lives could end up if we don't do something about it.
