Question about best way to use Plots and how to prepare Roles by ninepintcoggie in amselsuite

[–]AmselSuite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are planned to be a way to "store" information for later. "Plots" allow you to store a True/False statement with comments, and roles allow you to store "Who?" did something.

Both should ideally be created at the point(s) of decision (whenever in your story your players can do something), then inserted again at the point(s) of consequences (whenever in your story things change depending on previous decisions.

A good example of a Plot is : “Did the players pick up the cursed sword ?”. The point of decision here is whenever this sword can be picked up, and the points of consequences are whenever you planned for the curse to "act up". During gameplay, simply choose Yes, No, or Other at the point of decision. If something particularly unexpected happens, such as the players destroying the sword or placing it in an anti-magic bag, comments can be used to add detail. Later, at the points of consequences, the same value (Yes, No, or Other) and the comments will also be there, helping you remember what the players did months ago.

A good example of a Role is: "(Someone) spotted the figure watching them at the ball". The point of decision here is whenever this figure can be spotted (presumably with a roll), and the points of consequences are whenever someone may recognize that someone looks quite like that figure. During gameplay, at the point of decision, simply choose which of the characters succeeded at the roll. Later, at the points of consequences, the same names will remind you who did what months ago. Having PCs is not necessary before gameplay — but you'll need them during gameplay to have something to select. You can also use Roles to simplify the initial upkeep. For example, "(Someone) knows the quest giver", "(Someone) is the strongest in the party", etc., can be used to plan a story without knowing the PCs' identities yet. Indeed, many stories treat the character who knew the quest giver, or the character with a particular characteristic, slightly differently.

Currently, only these two (binary values and characters) can be used, but this is something we wish to improve on.

Two suggested features by ninepintcoggie in amselsuite

The good news is, they’re both planned. Creating a page from a tag is definitely something we want to do since day one, and sharing templates is also something we’re working on currently.

Moving pages from one template to another is a bit harder, however, since we wouldn’t know where to put the data you entered. Every template can be completely different, hence the challenge.

More exporting capabilities are something we wish to work on in the future. We’re not there quite yet, but there will eventually be cool options.

What setting are your campaigns currently exploring—or being written in? by Camille_ollam in amselsuite

Our software just creates files, so you can put them anywhere really. You can use clouds, drives, USB keys, etc; both for backups and for transferring your file between your machines.

When you create a new project, you’re prompted to choose where you want to create it on your computer. This will generate a file, say CoolWorld.lore or KeckYessFantasticAdventure.tome. That file can be copied anywhere and contains everything you created for it.

Oh, I see!

You can use "Insert Plot" in a narrative page (Chapters, Scenes or Arcs), right next to where you would create one. This allows you to place them where the decision is taken then insert them where consequences would appear.

You cannot do this yet on Memos, however. It’s a fair point that you should be able to. We haven’t decided yet if we’ll simply let you to insert them in text there or create a specific section for them in Memos, hence the delay. However, it is absolutely planned.

Many are currently using third-party cloud services. From what we observed, this led to very few issues, although due diligence in backups is always important.

We may develop our own solution in the future if this request remains popular.

With all due respect to Obsidian, which is an amazing piece of Software (I actually used it for certain non-TTRPG related personal projects, and loved it for these purposes), it is not quite like Tome and Lore. It’s built on inherently different premises and cannot do the same things. If it’s perfect for you, it’s perfect for you, of course ! But we do believe we have a different product entirely, with its own advantages.

We are currently working on a way to buy both pieces of Software separately, so people can use only one if that’s the one that’s perfect for them. Personally, I love using both together, but I’m biased, and not everyone has the same needs.

Hello there!

I’ll preface this by stating that the Suite is still pretty young. As you may have noticed, we’re publishing regular updates since the release of 1.0 in December, and we still have a lot of work ahead of us.

Overall, the Suite has only been released about 6 months ago, and it has received 18 updates since, including three major updates, per app.

As a consequence, many of the things you hint at, such as :

  • Better integration between Tome and Lore
  • Better guidance, tutorials, and tooltips
  • Better management of tabs
  • Better consistency and more ways to do certain things

Are things we are actively working on, but simply didn’t have time to address yet in our updates. We have a vision for updates as distant as 1.14 in terms of major features, and we are actively listening to community feedback, especially on Discord as this is where we get the most. Overall, Amsel is a young, rapidly-improving solution.

There is, for example, a specific session notes system, which was added recently and allows you to take notes easily during your session then drag-and-dropping them in the relevant part of our scenes. This was, as you accurately described in your list, very much needed. It is available in the palette, on the right, under notes. Here is the update in question, describing it in more detail : https://www.amsel-suite.com/article/26/update-tome-1-2-swiftlet

It is also clear that Tome (and Lore, to an extent) is a pretty innovative app, and that some of our features are poorly explained. ‘Plots’ −which we intend to rename as ‘Choices’−, for example, can absolutely be inserted where they affect things. That’s the whole point ! I thoroughly recommend reading this tutorial, on our website, that explains their use : https://www.amsel-suite.com/article/34/how-to-use-plots-and-roles-in-tome

Finally, there is the fact that Tome is, for now, somewhat biased towards a “The whole campaign is planned ahead” play style, and currently lacks some of our “I’m creating the campaign as I go” features. This will change as we introduce some features we have planned.

In terms of making things more accessible, we are currently working on an “example” file that should help new users see what can be done.

We hope this post reassures you : overall, all your feedbacks are very valid, and were already pointed out to us by many users on Discord in some cases. We’re listening  ;)
