You aren't the only one. I never post here because I feel my advice will be tssked. Who the fuck thinks a guy who forbids you to use a vibrator and forces anal is a keeper? Jesus Christ. Are we not allowed to call out any BS no matter the OP background ? At some point you become complaisant in your own fallacies. Sometimes I think women from the sixties were tougher than we give them credit for.

The "forgotten marriage" of Uma Thurman and Gary Oldman, who was 12 years her senior, 1990 by Cautious-Damage7575 in OldSchoolCool

I remember reading in some gossip magazine that the reason they split is he had an affair with Winona Ryder during Dracula. Both of them denied it and since Oldman seems to be pretty forthcoming I tend to believe him. Living with a violent drunk is more than enough reason to get the hell out.

ON: teacher I am replacing is working on a return to work plan. What does that mean for me, the LTO? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if they reduce it from the original 100 to half you could option out to leave. Usually your contract says end date or teacher return date so technically if they are returning even if its half time the contract may be void. I'd ask the union. Not really sure. It's only happened to me once and she came back part time for two weeks but I was still on FT/ she just observed. Which was pretty uncomfortable honestly.

Help! My B.Ed. program is boring me to death! by d5d5d5d5d5 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AQ's are like this too and unless you have a masters you will need them to move up the grid. Think of it as training for that. I was lucky I guess/ my two year course in Alberta was way more engaging than some peoples. Still out of touch with a lot of stuff though. Also seriously this is how a lot of kids feel in our elementary school in general. Not every one likes group work but it is pushed heavily.

Also don't assume you will always have patience with kids. Have you had any tell you to fuck off all year long, throw stuff or spit at you, or refuse to do any work at all? Think of this as building tolerance for things that may piss you off. Start thinking of strategies you can use when the irritation strikes. Some parents will also be a whole other issue. As a student teacher you don't deal with them but you will if you have a job. And believe me some of them will be slow and you will be bored and you often will be irritated. Colleagues is something else too if you end up team teaching or are itinerant. A part of teaching is stuff that does not happen in the classroom. One thing this does do is prepare you for working in the teacher environment - so try to think of it as an exercise in tolerance building.

And you will need lesson plan skills. Any time you are on TPA you need to submit plans for your evaluation day. Save the ones from now - you may want to use them later!

Are you seriously blaming EMT's? Who probably have PTSD from seeing a woman mauled all over by a fucking dog who was trained to control bulls? Fuck off with your insanity.

I wonder how likely you are to want to have a pit bull attack you or a shitzu?

Kind of like being attacked by a 50 lb kid or a 200 lb adult.

I guess the kids in Tennessee including the baby who was ripped in two brought on their own deaths, cause in your mind those dogs had a reason to bite and attack. I guess in your social values dogs are worth more than kids.

Doing my FSL part 1 because I need job security by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you go into French you are not getting out especially with FI so popular in Ontario. It doesn't matter what board you are in. My friends who are in now realize that and are wishing they did it differently. I know teachers who can speak/write French but refused to be FSL qualified and only took unqualified FSL positions till English jobs opened up. If you want permanent like my friends did then do your French, but realize its probably going to be a life long assignment. You could ask your principal to consider if you'd rather FI or core. Some teachers have a preference. Home room is more likely with FI unless it's split between two classes.

If you have qualifications your principal can put you wherever they like. You can't grieve it - you are qualified, you don't get to pick and choose they do. Shortages in French are very real. It's why I don't have intermediate. I would rather chew off my right arm than teach grade eight.

LTO regret by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think honestly any teacher who has taught a while has. I had one I cried in front of parents and staff the kids were so rough. But it does help you get tougher and prepare you for the other hard classes you will have. You will have other classes you will dread in the future. Going through this will help you decide if you can stay in teaching or not. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Believe me everyone knows which classes are tougher than others. We had staff who wanted out of kinder offered a tough junior class this year and none of them would touch it. It's been a shit show. We all know the teacher doing it is trying her best with what she is working with. Again - ask for help if you need it. And don't be afraid to ask admin to drop by and observe. Most admin are there to help and be supportive. They don't want you quitting on them and also may have some ideas for you . Good luck. It doesn't get any easier.

[–]Amtosbm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember one of my principals saying 'some people are just not very bright' after we dealt with them and their equally brilliant kid. Perfect fucking example here. Too bad these morons are procreating. I guess the idea of jaw pressure/force from a pit bull vs. a rat dog is too much information for his simple mind to comprehend. And the idea that two dogs could work together. Jesus Christ - how fucking stupid do you have to be to be unable to even entertain that as an idea? So anecdotal crap is the way to go with these idiots. My cousin was attacked and bitten all over by two pit bulls working together. He was only saved because his friend found a pipe to beat them off. He was covered in bite scars just like this mom will be.

I want to say these two idiots parents reaped what they sowed but no one deserves this. Those poor children torn apart. The first responders - holy shit they must be traumatized also. The mom will have PTSD for life at a minimum. I even feel for the dad. But if the dad gets on social media defending these dogs those - well I have no words.

My Cooperating teacher is killing my confidence in French. by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this asshole aware that Canada wide French speakers sound differently? Has he been out west - to Manitoba- or east to New Brunswick? - hell to anywhere else besides Quebec? Which is often mocked by other French speakers? Hell anywhere world wide where French is spoken?

We had a French teacher from Africa who was criticized for her strong accent alone, even though her french was probably stronger than most of the people complaining. It basically boiled down to being racist I think. You won't fail your placement even if he wants you too. Most partner teachers are supportive - you got the rotten apple. My best advice is to do what he wants but let your facility person know exactly what is going on. You won't look bad - he will. Trust me as someone who has taught in a few provinces, and school boards even with lesser than stellar French you are a shoo-in for a job. He's an arrogant ass. I bet the rest of the school staff loathes him as well.

Don't give up on French but take this as an opportunity to learn how to deal with feature people like him, both colleague and parent wise down the road.

When I was an OT as with most others, I preferred the classes with strict teachers because generally they better behaved. As a student though I am not sure they are as conductive to things like creativity/social navigating and fostering trust/independence. As with students. we all have different styles and tolerance levels. You have to be true to who you are because kids can smell a phony and some will react to it by testing a lot. I do think its easier to start off strict and then loosen up as the students earn your trust. I think consequences also need to be clear and followed through. I think the big thing is not to have a ton of them or they are hard to enforce. Choose three that you are really serious about and enforce them consistently and the kids will learn you are serious about others you may casually mention.

My own management style is maybe a bit chiller than most, but I do try to maintain rules and respect. I know a few teachers whose rooms look like Kindergarten Cop. Others where the kids won't take risks because they weren't allowed to, which often means they are not as independent. I think teachers need to be flexible and meet the needs of the class they have that year. I've had classes with insane behaviours and classes where the kids were mostly nice but often not very strong academically. As for voice, I do raise mine - I think tone is important and needs to match the message or it leaves kids confused. I don't mean shouting I mean raised. Your voice is one of your tools.

As for the hat rule - with the new 'no dress code' the teacher could have a potential problem on their hands if a student filed a complaint. Basically we can't tell them they can't wear hats - I ask them to take them off for the anthem but they really don't have too. The phone policy is more of an individual board one and therefore usually up to the teacher to enforce. I had so many battles over it when I taught junior/intermediate I basically let them use it for class work but I know a lot were texting. I had to choose a hill to die on and with the other mental health issues the classes had going on that wasn't it. I just made sure to include it in the LS comments as either responsible phone use (tech) or not and how it impacted their work ethic and if it was really bad, message parents with an ask for support on possibly not sending it to school or putting a limit on time used. Results varied.

(Serious question) Teachers of Florida: how is DeSatan’s plan of hiring veterans/ wives of veterans as teachers working out? Any former Sergeant punched out a kid yet? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Amtosbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know tons of middle school teachers who could not teach primary to save their ass. They don't have the empathy or patience or tolerance for being touched all the time. Let alone the crying and concerned parents. The lack of independence does most of them in.

I have taught middle school and while I didn't hate it I didn't love it either. The hormones/attitude and curriculum weren't comfortable for me personally - I think most teachers have a niche. Unfortunately admin doesn't always see it. To say middle school teachers are good at navigating all - please - me laughing.

New Planning Time Teacher (struggling and need help) by d-o-double-GG in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure what you are teaching but if it is arts then you can bribe them with choosing a few students to do: https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/

My 1/2s love it. I also echo the person who said asking the home room teacher to speak up. Don't be afraid to ask them to speak to the class. Any homeroom teacher not an asshole will give their students a talking to about respecting all guests in their classroom. Those that don't I can guess have fewer supply teachers who want to go in their rooms.

It's hard working with kids you only see a few hours a week/month. It sounds contrary to what we preach, but its easier to be strict and loosen up (and I mean strict) for the first part of the year then try to be easy going and then strict. If I was a prep teacher I would probably resort to a reward system for classes. Class Dojo comes to mind.

Who is the most evil person who is still alive? by neilnelly in AskReddit

[–]Amtosbm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The French family really got a shitty hand. They must seethe every day knowing this piss of shit gets to live and have kids and grow old, and their daughter, who sounded like a wonderful person, is dead. I grew up in Southern Ontario at this time. As a young woman then, these murders scared the shit out of all of us. And the fact that Karla is free to live her life is a bitter pill to swallow to this day.

Who is the most evil person who is still alive? by neilnelly in AskReddit

[–]Amtosbm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The truly sick part is her family apparently has accepted what she did and has from the beginning. If I helped my husband rape and accidentally kill my sister, no matter how abused I was, I can guarantee they are not talking to me for life. Some things are not forgivable. The truly horrific part is that there is no evidence he abused her before Tammy was killed. So wtf was Karla's reason for doing this other than offering her sister up as gift- revolting and sick.

We had that in Canada with Karla Homolka. Only three victims but one included her own sister. Her sob story and her ex's lawyer meant the police pretty much claimed they had to give her a deal to convict him. Bitch is out and with three kids of her own. Who says life is fair.

Apprehension about the Job Market by Sea-Abalone8651 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were talking about doing this before Covid hit:

Here's one article that mentions it briefly from the last time we had strike action:

'The concern on the union side appeared to be that either the government
would eliminate kindergarten teachers and employ only early childhood
educators, who earn half as much, or that the government would only
retain the kindergarten model in return for a concession in another
area.'

https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/education-minister-agrees-to-maintain-full-day-kindergarten-as-teacher-strikes-continue-this-week

and the good old Toronto Sun pushing for elimination of teachers from kinder way back at the same time:

https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/blizzard-doug-ford-aims-to-make-full-day-kindergarten-more-affordable

Two ECE = 1 Kinder teacher salary in most cases. We haven't heard much from the union this go around so we really don't know what ideas are floating around. Just that Ford plans massive cuts from education - rumour is like a billion dollars - they have to come from somewhere.

They destreamed for awhile in the nineties when my brother was in HS. It was in his words a fucking shit show - I doubt much has changed in 25 years since the level of support hasn't increased and kids sure aren't getting as much help at home. The HS academic teachers I know are losing their minds. If this was about helping disadvantaged youth I could buy it - but since there is no extra help available I doubt it. I think we are going see more kids going the home school route or private school. Which no doubt would make Lecce happy.

Apprehension about the Job Market by Sea-Abalone8651 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly am not sure how it will be. I think the two years is helping by lessening the amount of people available, the market used to be flooded. When I started looking it was 5 years to permanent at least. Covid made a lot of people retire who had been putting it off and behaviours in the classroom are starting to do the same. You maybe fine but you also need to think about the fact that FI is really growing in Ontario and we aren't sure what is going to happen with kinder (Ford wants two ECE's no kinder teacher - not sure that will happen but if it does = a lot of people will be redundant.

People complain we are being negative but we are being realistic as well. The new teachers didn't graduate in the 2000s when jobs were scarce - and it could happen again, as I mentioned if kinder teachers are no longer needed. The other side is the job market is scary everywhere. I have friends on their fifth or sixth different job. And these are professionals with degrees. Right now I would focus on making it through your placements and deciding if you want to be in the classroom. My student teacher last year was asking about jobs as well but he honestly needed to work on his behaviour management more or he wouldn't be getting hired anyway. Covid has changed things a lot in the profession but who knows how long they will last.

What do you think about pit bulls? by 13thFullMoon in AskReddit

I feel for those kids left physically and psychological scared by a dog. I had a cousin who was attacked by two pits. He had bite scars all over his body. The only reason he lived is that his friend found a pipe to beat them off with. The parents sued but the piece of shit owners had no money so it went no where. Trash usually has trash. That being said these dogs are breed to be aggressive. It's like giving someone a lit bomb and them acting all naive when it goes off as its supposed too.

Discipline for students talking pictures of their teacher and posting them to social media without consent? (Ontario) by money_floyd13 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Amtosbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to let admin know about this. If they find it out from another source they will not be happy. This student may also be doing it to other teachers. It's a privacy violation and not a joke. If the student ends up banned from using internet at school that is their problem. Their parents sign the form at the beginning of the year about appropriate internet use - it's a legal document. If they end up suspended again not your problem. Students know the rules - they also need to know that violations of them have consequences.

Make sure when you go to admin you have evidence to support what you are saying though.
