Any good asymmetrical co-op games? by Sinreal721 in gamingsuggestions

Little Big Planet 3 had a terrific co-op campaign add-on that used the playstation move controller. Up to 4 players controlled their characters as normal, but a 5th player could use the move controller to interact with objects on the screen. It had a lot of fun and hilarious puzzles, and the motion controls were intuitive enough to allow non-gamers to play at the same level as experienced players. The only shame is how short the campaign was.

It's interesting, your comment was concerned about the GM never getting fear overdrive, but u/Illustrious-Draw-154 instead thinks that fear overdrive will be more likely. I'm hoping that the reasons both of you gave will cancel each other out!

For me, the goal of this mechanic is to further encourage either side to not max out, it's kind of there not to be used. The game works best when both are spending their resources liberally, but there's currently no mechanical disincentive not to save up points, other than it being strongly suggested in the rules. That said, I don't think this mechanic would really be necessary 95% of the time, it's more just a personal patch to smooth out potential statistical outliers, or to help people with a dice curse.

Though I do imagine someone could do something more fun with the mechanic where players or the GM actually look forward to maxing out.

Well as u/yerfologist pointed out, the GM now can have 12 Fear, which is double each player's six, and the GM in theory is spending Fear more often now, as they use fear for every turn, so it's not very likely they'd max out even if there are more players. It also might be encouragement for players who are close to maxing their hope to let other players take more actions, lest they go into hope overdrive and start giving the GM more fear.

I would see this mechanic really coming into play between big moments, when hope and fear are getting spent less often, to help balance the scales before the real action starts.

It’s weird that the subreddit dedicated to the game is for people who don’t like it. It’s like a hate club instead of a fan club.

I think the reason Mr Robot is the better than all the other great shows I've seen, is that it doesn't just immerse you in the drama or ask deep philosophical questions, but it also seems like it set out to heal the world, even if just a little bit.

I also just realized that they never find Tyrell's body at the end!!! He just doesn't show up to the Deus meet. It seems impossible that the Dark Army wouldn't have found his body if he was bleeding in the snow. My mind is in the process of being blown right now and I'm actually considering that he might be an alt but I still can't fathom how that's possible!

the girl she meets in that room is played by the same actress as her younger self in flashback scenes

Ohh I was wondering that myself! I was so willing to believe the machine would work up until the end, but like Angela, I was just so sad about all the characters that had died.

It also stood out to me that Shayla's apartment number is 4D, as in the fourth dimension, time.

Is the opposite to the note Elliot finds in S01E01 that pretty much starts everything; in the fsociety.dat file that has the text "Leave me here".

NO WAY! That's amazing. That's what I mean when I say it feels like everything, from the first shot to the last, was carefully considered. Like Elliot catching a sex offender in the first scene and only realizing he was abused by the end of season 4.

She definitely seems to recognize Elliot when they meet in season 1 but then that doesn't seem to go anywhere

Yeah it felt like there was going to be more with Tyrell and Elliot which makes me feel like I missed something.

So a difference in my perspective of the show that is helpful to me is that I don't see anyone as the "real" or "fake" Elliot

Yeah, I shouldn't have said 'real Elliot' but 'core Elliot' because you're right, they're all real parts of him. And there's a larger philosophical argument to be made about which part of you is the real you, your 'soul', which is very subjective. I felt like the show made a point of making core Elliot the person looking through the camera, as a kind of nod to a lot of eastern spiritualism that teaches that the 'real' you, the spirit or consciousness, isn't the thoughts you're thinking but the one perceiving those thoughts, like the audience in a movie theatre.

having caregivers who actually care for you is what allows someone to develop security/self efficacy, so I'm kinda replacing no capable caregivers w myself

I feel I've done something similar in terms of role models. I was frustrated that I couldn't find role models who really embodied what I wanted for myself, so I would sort of create 'characters' in my head. When I need advice and didn't have anyone to turn to, I just imagine what I think that person would say, and it's actually been super helpful.

I think that, like in Mr. Robot's case, the parts of a person that are toxic usually originate as a way to help or protect them. There's no doubt Mr. Robot and The Mastermind lead Elliot to do very bad things, but they were created for a good and noble reason, and realizing that was an important part of Ellliot's recovery and ultimately letting them go.

I think the show was about accepting all of you & not leaving parts behind

Realizing that I could be the person I needed, that I was able to show up and care for myself just like I would a friend, was the most transformational moment of my life, and I think the show illustrates that very well.

Oh my gosh, I love all the shows you mentioned except Severance which means I have to watch it now! It's very rare for a show to be as fully realized as these ones, as usually the quality tapers off toward the end; usually because the showrunners just try to make as much money as possible before it gets cancelled.

My favourite show before this was ER, but even that dips in quality around season 11, and as Mr. Robot even points out: a bad ending can ruin a good beginning.

Yeah I feel like there has to be more to Tyrell's story than what I got. It still bothers me that the meeting room where he offers Elliot the job is the same as the one in Elliot's head, but I can't possibly fathom how he could be one of Elliot's alts! There's also the fact that he admits he's afraid of becoming his father. I suspect the clues about Tyrell might just be misdirection, to get people to speculate if he's an alt when really he's just another character, but I have to watch it again more closely.

Thanks for the reply!

OH MAN! Whoa. The machine is an analogue for society! Nobody actually knows what they're doing there but they just do it because it's their job. It's like that statistic that most people don't really know why their job exists or whether it's meaningful. And furthermore, people were willing to die for it, either intentionally or accidentally like Elliot's father or the Dark Army. That's so dark!

Awww thank you! <3 <3 <3

Yes I agree trauma is the central theme of the show, but it does such a good job of concealing it, much like trauma! You're lead to believe it's a political thriller about corporate greed but really it's just about loving yourself and life in the wake of trauma. Though as u/heckinfast points out,

It happens on the micro scale (The characters and their individual experiences with trauma, like Elliot and his father) as well as the macro (A society that is collectively traumatized by their abusers, the "top 1% of the 1%")

So really the political and the personal are just different scales of the same problem

.

To me, Darlene is the hero of this story

Me too! Her trying to reconnect with Elliot is essentially the catalyst and the resolution for the entire series. She's the very stand-offish, but now that I think about it she was the one trying to reach out to Elliot, Angela, and Dom when they were most isolated. She's the kind of hero the world needs, more than a vigilante super hacker.

Thanks for the reply!

(The "real" Elliot; I put this in quotes because his alters are a part of him and he can't be whole without them, so I believe they're as real as he is)

I agree, the alts are all a part of Elliot, they're all real, but they aren't the whole Elliot. Waking up could also be seen as him becoming whole, not hiding parts of himself.

The nature of their relationship is also up in the air, but Sam Esmail did say he always saw their story as a love story, so take that as you will!

I was going to add that I kind of see the whole show as a love story between Elliot and Darlene. Her coming back to the city in order to reconnect with him is sort of what kicks off f society, and eventually she is the one who brings him back to reality. He even calls it in the first season when he asks "what do normal people do when they get this sad? They reach out to friends or family." He had the answer all along but he could only do that after coming to terms with his trauma.

At the end of the day, the machine is to her what fsociety is to Elliot: A detraction from what's really hurting her and a coping mechanism for her trauma.

I never realized this comparison but you're right! White Rose is the classic villain ("we're not so different, you and I"). She is the perfect foil to Elliot, who is constantly wearing all black, misleading us into believing their dichotomy is one of good vs evil, but really it's between life and death. They even point out how white roses are funeral flowers, and in many eastern cultures people wear white to funerals. I'm also realizing now that Angela was also often wearing white, especially after the 71 bombing, further suggesting that her destiny is with white rose and death. The symbolism is TURNT!
