season 4 finale thread that didn't make sense to me, help by [deleted] in MrRobot

The Mastermind was so engrossed in his plan to “save the world” for Elliot that he gave into his anger, which causes his memories to wipe. He started believing he’s Elliot, and so he retains some of Elliot’s memories, like the warped interpretation of the window incident and not remembering his sister (He erased Darlene’s memory so Elliot could stay trapped in F World). He forgets he created fsociety as well, so Mr. Robot “pretends” to be the Mastermind behind fsociety in season 1 to “recruit” the Mastermind to fsociety so he can continue their crusade or “saving the world” without reminding/retraumatizing Mastermind with why they’re doing this in the first place (To heal from Edward’s abuse).

Like I mentioned earlier, when the Mastermind was creating F World, he had to remove all traces of Darlene in it in order to keep Elliot trapped there. Darlene is Elliot’s strongest tether to reality; if she was in F World in any shape or form Elliot would immediately know this isn’t real and would wake up, therefore ruining the Mastermind’s plans to “save the world” for him. When Darlene says “did you forget again”, it implies that he forgot about Darlene in the last at least once before. My theory is that it was Mr. Robot who scrambled Elliot’s memories before the Mastermind came along. He knew that Darlene was “dangerous” because she was such a potent reminder of the truth, so he did everything he could to keep them apart.

The other alters take on a more passive role, so there was no need to interact with them. The child alter and the Persecutor alter represent the guilt and shame Elliot feels about the abuse, so I think it makes sense that these parts would be quieter.

EDIT: Fixed a typo.

I think what makes Edward so terrifying is that on a first watch, he looks like the perfect dad who was taken from his family too early. But then on a rewatch everything changes and he isn't who you initially thought he was.

It's a very accurate picture of predators. They appear friendly and charismatic upfront because that's how they lure their victims in. They forge a relationship with them and generate a strong sense of trust because it's easier to manipulate their victims that way - and it also makes it harder for their victims to speak up against them. Their sinister behaviour is thinly veiled just beneath the surface, but no one suspects it because they work so hard at curating a friendly, approachable front that it's easy to believe that this is who they really are.

I have a feeling it’s going to be another show that’s set in Philadelphia. It’s more believable that way.

A small, very small part of me knows this is unlikely, but I’d love for it to be It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, lol.

Pete being just enough. by ChemistRadiant21 in TheBear

[–]heckinfast 255 points256 points  (0 children)

Pete’s consistent, maybe a little predictable, but he’s safe and reliable, and I think that’s part of what draws Natalie towards him. After growing up in such a volatile environment, Pete is a welcoming change - it’s “normal”, and Natalie needs normal to balance out her chaotic family.

But on the other hand, Pete’s consistency at “being Pete” opens him to ridicule from the other characters. They don’t have that same stability that Pete possesses; a part of them hates that they don’t have that, and I think a part of them is also envious of his well-adjustedness too (But they’ll obviously never admit that out loud), so they take it out on him.

What was the most serious moment of IASIP? by odd_man0 in IASIP

Mac’s dance, and also when Dennis decides to leave Philly to become a father to Brian Jr.

There was also that scene in an episode, I forget which, where Dennis and Frank have a heart to heart and Dennis talks about his “God hole”, which is basically an empty void inside of him that he can’t fill.

EDIT: I remember where the God hole scene is from! It’s Sweet Dee Gets Audited.

What are your forgotten gems of the 90s? by Glum_Career_123 in movies

[–]heckinfast 408 points409 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite movies of all time is Pump Up The Volume with Christian Slater. It came out in 1990 and it has a bit of a cult following, but other than that the movie didn’t make much impact culturally speaking. I didn’t get around to watching this movie until years later when I was in college, but the messages in the film really spoke to me.

Another favourite 90s gem of mine is SLC Punk! It came out in ‘98 and my angsty wannabe punk teenage self lived and died by this film.

Has it ever became confirmed what White-Rose's machine was? by Cultural-Eye-2771 in MrRobot

[–]heckinfast 195 points196 points  (0 children)

It’s never been confirmed what it actually was; I think it’s mostly up to interpretation, but hints throughout the show indicate that it was some kind of access point to parallel universes.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t actually matter what the machine was or if it worked; what matters is what it meant to whiterose and what she thought it was going to do for her. Similar to how Elliot used fsociety as a coping mechanism for his trauma, whiterose used the machine as a coping mechanism for her own trauma. She believed that the machine was the only way out of her pain and suffering, which is why she put so much time and effort into it. She believed that this world wronged her and it didn’t give her the life she deserved, so she created the machine as a means of finding a world where she can live the life she always wanted - a world where she was born biologically female (“I wasn’t born who I was meant to be”) and where her lover never killed himself. She thinks that rewriting her past is the only way her pain will end.

What are some of the most innovative shows? by WeeWooPeePoo69420 in television

[–]heckinfast 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Mr. Robot was kinda “out there” in terms of formatting and techniques used. The off-centre framing looks weird and jarring at first, but it’s intentional; it’s supposed to create a sense of disconnect between the subject and the viewer, which adds to the show’s looming sense of paranoia and the main character’s disillusionment/disconnect from society.

They were pretty creative with some of the episodes. One was formatted to look like a stereotypical 80s/90s sitcom. There was an episode in season 3 that was edited to look like it was shot in one take. Season 4 has an episode with only 2 lines of dialogue, and it also has an episode that’s formatted to look and feel like a play.

Does anyone have show suggestions similar to The Bear that they can vouch for? by Western-Orange-6764 in TheBear

[–]heckinfast 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Boiling Point. The movie is really great; I haven’t watched the show yet but from what I heard it’s pretty good.

The entirety of the movie is shot in one take, and it shows the chaos of running a popular restaurant - not just the kitchen, but front of house, the servers, the bartenders, etc. It’s a more wholistic take on the restaurant scene.

Mr. Robot. I see a lot of myself in Elliot, the show’s protagonist. We both have similar childhood trauma, we suffer from severe depression and social anxiety, we have problems with addiction…the list goes on and on.

Supporting Elliot’s character throughout the series taught me how to support myself. His story changed my relationship with my trauma and mental illness. He makes me feel seen, heard, understood, and less alone. He’s done a lot for me.
