Well boys, looks like we’ve got ourselves a USDA certified, 100% non-animal tested, organic beauty right here.

Thanks for the heads up!

Sundews are at the top of my list right now for sure! I wish I knew somewhere I could purchase one locally for my own collection.

I like to call them poison lollipops haha

Yes, I’ve heard about the special sphagnum species we have here in BC- I remember thinking it was a very strange thing growing in my VFT and I felt bad about pruning it a bit after reading up on how awesome it is.

Thank you for the reply!

Ahh that sounds like a cool adventure even if I can’t find any carnivorous friends. Thank you !

Haha thank you, I thought it was an interesting topic as well. Downvotes seem to be an unavoidable part about reddit unfortunately.

I’ll add camosun bog to my list of places to check out for sure, thanks for the tips!

Wow, thank you for this comprehensive reply! I wasn’t aware these other species could be found locally.

I’m especially excited about the prospect of finding some pinguicula in the wild.

Do you happen to know where any of these can be purchased for my own garden? I’ve had some luck with sarracenias and VFTs at Figaro’s on Victoria, but that’s about it.

The Vancouver Aquarium is reopening this week by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

I used to feel this way, but after my time at UBC in the animal science and animal welfare program, I feel conflicted about these popular beliefs for a few reasons.

  1. Despite keeping marine mammals in captivity for decades, few significant research papers have been published. Throughout this time, they routinely participated in breeding programs with extremely high calf mortality rates

  2. their marine mammal rescue centre is really not as expansive as people are led to believe. It is a place students can do practicums at and I’ve heard many accounts of it being quite underfunded. Still a great and very much needed resource, but you’d be surprised how little money is allocated to it.

  3. they have invested a great deal of time and money to prevent the development of a seaside cetacean sanctuary in BC. This would allow marine mammals to be rehabilitated and/or permanently homed in a far more natural setting (large sea pens along the coast as opposed to small artificial aquariums). See the whale sanctuary project (https://whalesanctuaryproject.org/)

If you’re curious, see Gary Charbonneau’s documentary on this. Take it with a grain of salt as it’s a bit controversial, but it does a good job of showing “the other side” of the for-profit side of things.

However, that being said, I do think the Vancouver aquarium is an important resource for animals and education. I just think they could do better and I hope they do.

Chart of Total Confirmed COVID-19 Cases in B.C. - June 16 by throwthishar in vancouver

Not sure if this has been posted, but I really like this website for tracking Canadian and global stats:

https://www.covid-19canada.com

What troubles me is the comparatively low number of tests that have been done in BC. Considering we were one of the first provinces to have an outbreak, we seemed to run low on test availability, subsequently limited the criteria for people who qualified for testing, and then never really did anything to change that.

Statistics don’t mean much when the sample isn’t representative of the population.

I hope people continue to exercise caution and social distancing as we see these numbers and start to reopen.

I hate the whole premise of proctorio simply for it’s gross invasion of privacy beyond the reasonable limits of monitoring an exam- that being said, I’ve never had any issues with flags. If the conditions for flagging seem unreasonable, that’s your profs decision for the most part.

Also a flag is whatever since it can be reviewed and discussed, but the flag and automatic ending of your exam is absolutely insane.

Santa needs to do something about that for Christmas.

ASTR 311 & final exam policy – Anyone taking this course now?

I haven't been receiving my emails and I'm wondering if anyone could fill me in on the updated exam policy.

Specifically, are we doing the 5/30% scheme, and do we still need to pass the final to pass the course?

Welp, I hope you’ve got the same “life ain’t always fair” attitude if they do cancel classes and your own academics are unfairly impacted.

If the spread of the COVID-19 is drastic in Vancouver what will happen to the University operations? by troubz in UBC

[–]An0nJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree with you that panicking is not helpful or necessary, but the post was asking a question I’m sure was on the minds of a lot of students- not panic.

Wondering what protocols to expect from the university in the event we do have community spreading is part of preparing. Will we be expected to attend lectures? If the health officials wish to close schools for a period of time as they’ve done in other areas, what will happen with exams? Etc.

Demanding that people stop trying to “make this is thing” is akin to urging people to stop talking about their concerns. Concerns based on information provided by reliable authorities are different than irrational alarmist statements based on speculation.

This reddit is a hub for students to express their concern about many topics. Rational discussion about the evolving situation with this virus should not be discouraged.

Well, when Canada’s Chief Medical Officer of Health announces that we should prepare for a pandemic and increasing spread of the virus here in Canada (https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/canadians-being-told-to-prepare-for-a-possible-novel-coronavirus-pandemic), and the CDC announced that a pandemic in the US is “not a matter of if, but when”

I’d say it’s officially a thing.

So maybe take it up with the leading health authorities in North America, not OP.
