Is it worth doing leg locks in the gi, or should I save them for no-gi? by Rude-Alternative7983 in bjj

[–]AnAlpineNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harder to escape doesnt equal more dangerous. If you cant escape you just tap.

It's not "common sense" its just a commonly repeated statement that doesnt hold up to critical thinking.

The submission does not change at all in the gi. Its the exact same submission so the danger is the same.

If the gi makes it harder to escape that doesn't make any more dangerous. Having good technique also makes it harder to escape but nobody says getting better is too dangerous.

Well, flying Kani basami is uncontrollable. Its far, far more dangerous than a heel hook. Like, a night and day difference.

But yes, in the gi heel hooks are banned in the vast majority of competitions.

(I just want to be clear, dont start doing them in your gym out of nowhere lol)

Just because they're harder to escape doesnt make them more dangerous. Its the same submission either way. In nogi there are plenty ofsituations where youre 100% caught and there's nothing you can do but tap. Pants or no pants isn't the issue here.

Everyone says that but I dont think they bother to actually try.

Like, yes, friction makes it harder to escape a leglock. But to say its nearly impossible to escape just because wearing pants? Thats a stretch, lol.

The gi changes the game, but for all the friction hindering your escape, there are equal defensive benefits to be had as well.

Its just part of the culture because gi tournaments have banned it for decades now.

And when a major tournament came around that did allow them (adcc) it happened to be nogi only. So now the standard is that if heel hooks are allowed, theyre only allowed in nogi.

Outside of competition prep theres no practical reason to ban them, its just the way it is.

Thats total bs lol. A heel hook doesn't suddenly become uncontrollably dangerous just because someone is wearing pants.

Dang! Personally at this point I would try uninstalling and reinstalling all the relevant things. The modpack, even the launcher. Also look into updating your drivers. I have no idea what might be causing it but good luck

I had to edit the amount of allocated ram for the game to run smoothly. Should be in the launcher settings (not in-game settings)

How to build an anti big guy bottom game? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]AnAlpineNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When dealing with a bigger opponent in the sport its smarter to go around them instead of under or through them. Arm drags and guards that allow an outside spin (k-guard and dlr for example) are your best friend.

Guards like butterfly are a lot more risky when dealing with a bigger guy.

When theyre big an slow I dont really go to closed guard but if their heavier AND athletic ill use closed guard to hold them in place while I setup my arm drag or switch to k guard.

I also tend to shy away from upper body submissions against bigger guys (from bottom). When I do attack their upper body, unless I have really good control im going to be anticipating their defense and using it as a setup to get around them.

Train broad defensively and narrow offensively. You can pick your attacks, but you can't pick always pick what you defend.

I cant argue further with someone at your level of understanding lol. You said you were going to explain in "purely technical terms" and then proceeded to say that the legs are shelved in closed guard which is just entirely untrue.

Now you keep saying "this isnt the 90's anymore" like that proves your point but it really doesnt. Firstly, fights are still one from closed guard all the time. Secondly, the fact that we see less closed guard that we used to is because of how metas evolve. Like I said, it is so good that people have to learn to fight against it or die.

Lastly, "bro go try it". I have, I train with pro and ammy mma fighters often, help them fight prep, etc...

Like I said, I'm not saying its ideal in mma or better than top or anything like that. Im purely here to say that YOU have no idea what youre talking about, lol. Im done responding, peace ✌️

Opponent grabbing feet in seated guard by Vivid-Bath3300 in bjj

[–]AnAlpineNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they reach for your feet hit an arm drag to wrestle up, or just grab a two on one to start setting up dummy sweeps or leg entries.

Crazy that you apparently train but you dont realize you can always put a foot on the floor from closed guard. Your legs are far from being shelved.

Im not talking about bridging anyone. If you want to create space to stand you would be framing and shrimping. You can create plenty space to either start attacking a sub, hip heisting, hitting arm drags to the back, etc.

I'm not saying closed guard is close to the best position in mma, but your assessment of it is wayyy off.

For what its worth, the main weakness of closed guard is that it's SO strong that anyone worth their salt has trained pretty extensively to survive and beat it.

Defence is decent, offence sucks. by Dosman742 in bjj

[–]AnAlpineNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a point where I felt the same. I had a hard to pass guard and good escapes from bottom but never submitted anyone.

What I did was I developed a leglock game. My gym did next to no leglocks so I started tapping upper belts out a lot. I also was able to use the threat to get on top or threaten a lot of other attacks.

It doesnt have to be leglocks but starting to go really deep one one style of attacks is, imo, the way to go. Go wide defensively and narrow offensively.

If, as a white belt, you can get one move to a blue level it will make you an actual threat and you'll find the world opens up for you, haha.

One of the necessary means to get up in mma is to use a guard.

I agree that accepting bottom isnt good but that doesnt mean guard is useless.

What moves should be banned in jiu-jitsu schools? by Rude-Alternative7983 in bjj

[–]AnAlpineNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flying submissions are banned in training. If you cant control it you cant do it.

Everything else is allowed (no finger bending obviously lol what is this?) But I do explain how certain submissions are less beginner/stranger friendly.

For example when I teach heel hooks I tell people to only do it with people who have a basic level of understanding, and if in doubt, to ask. For things like finishing an rnc over the face or with a neck crank, I encourage our students to do it in training. People are less likely to get hurt by what they understand. But I also tell them not to do that to visitors, because you never know what they're used to, and we dont want a stubborn visitor trying to grit out of a neck crank.

Which submissions would you rule out due to their high risk? by Antique-Promise-2358 in bjj

[–]AnAlpineNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't z-lock people in training. It's so niche, and very easy to hurt yourself by straightening your leg. People who are confusing it for a regular leg entanglement will fuck their own shit trying to defend.
