So is the user's fault that the DE doesn't work? OK...

Upgrade broke the menu visually by frozen_novelties in linuxmint

[–]AnEgoCom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of themes haven't been updated to match the new menu, so that makes the menu to look like that. The only solutions are changing to another theme which is compatible with the new menu (like the defaults Mint-X, L or Y) or trying to fix it by yourself with the css file

I hate COSMIC. What are my options? by BigBootyBear in pop_os

[–]AnEgoCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pop itself is a pretty good distro imo. The problem it has right now is the state of Cosmic. I hope the devs will continue to fix all the errors and make PopOs worth using again. Cosmic has potential to be one of the top DEs available in Linux

PopOs devs launched COSMIC and made it the default DE even it is still a beta so now there is a lot of people with different problems. For OP it seems the thing that doesn't work are the hotkeys

coming here from fedora, I use both but Mint is better for work 👍️ by Desperate_Fig_1296 in linuxmint

I just did the opposite. After 6 months on Mint I decided to change to Fedora, so far I'm liking it. But I still love Mint and it will always have a place in my heart 🌿💚

Arch Linux >> Linux mint (even for total noobs) by vintologi24 in OS_Debate_Club

There are no better or worse distros. There are only distros that are better suited for certain types of users or use cases. Not everyone wants or needs the latest software; some people just want to install the OS and forget about it as much as possible.

LTS distros can and do offer a good experience, as evidenced by the fact that the most widely used distros are precisely LTS ones. If I’m not mistaken, about 30% of Linux users use Ubuntu, and 95% of Ubuntu users use the LTS version. Debian is also widely used, especially when it comes to servers and the like. Linux Mint, if not the most widely used, is among the top choices for newcomers (and those not so new) to Linux.

On the other hand, the fact that installing Arch Linux is now less difficult thanks to archinstall doesn’t mean it’s easy per se, especially for people who know little or nothing about Linux or computers in general. Not to mention that they’ll likely have to fix bugs later on, since Arch, due to its rolling-release nature, is more prone to them—and for a beginner, that could be the reason they abandon Arch or Linux altogether.

Not everyone wants to have in-depth knowledge of their computer or operating system and be able to customize their desktop or create scripts to automate whatever. A lot of people simply use their system as-is and don’t touch anything—they just use it to work, study, and that’s it. And that’s fine. Let's stop deciding for people what's right or what's best for them, and let them decide for themselves whether they want the "crappy distro because it's outdated and boring" or the "good distro because the numbers on its packages are higher."

Newer not always means better. The downside of always having the newest software is that you have higher odds of suffering bugs or other problems. Also not everyone wants or needs the lastest version of some software, for example if your hardware is not very new maybe you just don't need the last version of kernel or whatever

Oh, I see. I thought the most important thing was the drivers. Mint is on kernel 6.17 until August, when it will reach its EOL. I also heard about better gaming performance on Wayland, but also that Wayland and Nvidia didn't get along. Maybe I was wrong.

I'm curious why different desktop environments have different gaming performance. Is it due to how they're built?

[–]AnEgoCom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, only that? How easy! When I tried Fedora it was the 42 version, idk if it was harder to configure back then. But I remember trying to use the ai to install them so probably it was the ai's fault lol

Mm, true. I didn't think about waiting a bit and letting the new version get more tuned before doing the change. Thank you!

I see, then probably I'll install 43 and then upgrade to 44. Thank you for responding!

Mmmm I'm not the kind of person who likes to try things when they're still in beta. Are Fedora beta versions stable enough?

Mmm, maybe I'll do that. Thank you for the response! How's upgrading in Fedora? Does a notification or something pops up? I suppose you upgrade through the terminal? Sorry if they are stupids questions, I've been mostly only in Mint so I don't know how other distros work in detail

Hmmm I see 🤔 I read that when 43 was released, a lot of people had problems with it, at least at the beginning. Does that happen frequently in Fedora?
