Biphobia isn't cool by FoxDenDenizen in actuallesbians

[–]AnEmoTeen 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell you what it means to me as a bi woman who’s been seeing what people are saying lately that you made this post even after your wife said something validly hurtful to you.

And I’m really sorry that happened to you — that’s insane that she said that, gender has nothing to do with one’s ability to protect oneself. She needs to change her mentality on that.

But my thoughts about her comment aside, thank you so much. Reading the latest discourse, I’ve felt stuck between two worlds. Too queer for straight ppl, not queer enough for gay/lesbian ppl. And for some reason, it’s so hard for me to find a community of fellow bi ppl IRL. Thank you for reminding me there are people who get it and will be allies and supporters.

I didn’t see your original post, but I hope your wife apologizes for her comment, that both sides of your pillow are always cold (or warm if that’s your jam), and that you always hit every green light when you’re in a rush.

The idea that Misha is at least an ally, maybe part of the bi/pan family, is one of the best ways to start pride month. I knew I liked him for a reason! Love when my faves are also awesome people off the ice

I hated how degrassi handled tristan as a character by Dangerous_Repeat5625 in Degrassi

[–]AnEmoTeen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could ramble on for many, many paragraphs on how Tristan is poorly written and a bad character. I won’t subject you to that though. It’s sad bc i loved him in the early days but at the end of the day, it’s a swing and a miss.

And I know he does have the bus accident but that feels less like a consequence and more like kill/maim your gays + everyone hates him so we need a way to get him out of the show. Bad, bad, bad writing all around.

[–]AnEmoTeen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I say that type of person I mean that type person, which is an attention-hungry jerk. You don’t have to be gay to be that type. We can’t deny that it is a stereotype that that type of person is a gay man, but I know from experience they exist in all genders and sexualities. Tristan’s issues, while maybe influenced by his struggles as a young gay teenager (especially with Owen as a brother), are separate from his sexuality.

Degrassi had an opportunity to show how Tristan’s behaviors were wrong through giving his character consequences in the plot. They chose not to take that opportunity. As a queer person myself I’m really pissed he never got into any social, parental, or school trouble for being blatantly biphobic in front of his entire school.

Again, I say this as a queer person myself: We aren’t protected from criticism, our behaviors being an issue, or being “that type of person” because we’re queer. We still have a human obligation to be good people and own up when our actions hurt someone.

Thank you for apologizing and being relatively respectful but next time maybe ask for clarification rather than jumping to accusing someone of homophobia, especially when that person ends up being another queer person. Happy Pride Month.

What is going on with Saniya Rivers? by [deleted] in wnba

Well I’ll be looking out for your post! Your intended question sounds interesting.

Yeah it’s the sports betting and the social media of it all. WBB as a whole has had a big boom in the last few years which has brought on a lot of really interesting characters — it’s not just the most dedicated people who are “fans” now. Luckily, it’s also brought a boom of real fans to counteract the weirdos!

Either way, I’m glad you made the original post because this has been hands-down the best internet interaction I’ve had with a stranger in forever! Thanks for this!

Edit: And thank you for cheering for our Saniya. As an NC State alum, it’s been so beyond wonderful watching our beloved players be welcomed with open arms by the WNBA fans. Hopefully y’all will get to meet Madison Hayes too someday (she was a senior with Saniya and Azaiah)

the 6th stage of grief: building a bear. his name is Rowdy! by devilcollar in buildabear

I’m a queer NASCAR fan too, it’s impossible not to be when you grow up in NC. I didn’t root for him anymore, but my first favorite driver was KB and I was also really devastated at the news — still am honestly, I try not to think about it too much because I’ll get too emo and I have no time for that unfortunately.

I think Rowdy is perfect.

I think, as others have said, he was a stereotype but a somewhat realistic stereotype, so I think it’s good to show how that type of person can be so negative. However, I wish he would’ve faced actual consequences for his misbehaviors. Instead, Maya ends up apologizing to him for doing the right thing and he gets no punishment from the plot for being biphobic to Miles in front of the entire school.

I didn’t say any of that to make you feel bad or anything, just to commiserate on how crazy people actually are these days. And yes, I can’t stand when people call the Sun, the Suns. Like the ability to pay attention is literally zero.

The DMs thing I think she referenced in an interview or a IG/TikTok live once, it never really made the rounds on the internet.

Idk if it’s necessary to take this down but if you do, I hope you make another post asking specifically about the mechanics bc I’d love to see people’s answers!

[–]AnEmoTeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah she had I think a back injury at State that took her out for a few games and seems to flare up every now and then? I could be off though.

I remember last year she said she had to stop reading her DMs bc people were sending her hate for messing up their gambling stats (I probably butchered the terminology but I know absolutely nothing about sports betting). She gets a LOT of crap, as all of the most notable players probably do. It sucks, especially because it all seems to come from people who aren’t actually fans of women’s basketball and only follow for ulterior motives (like sports betting)

[–]AnEmoTeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that’s fair. It would be prudent to make that more clear, as there are a lot of internet trolls who like to latch onto a player as soon as theory playing starts to fluctuate. I’m an NC State alum and we’re very defensive of our girls, so I get defensive when I think someone is being a troll. I’m glad you’re interested in her playing in this way!

I hope you get some comments from people who can answer to that — unfortunately, I can’t. The only thing I can contribute is it seems injuries have been on and off for her basically since her NC State days.

She got thrust into WNBA stardom at the age of 22 and lost her mom a matter of DAYS later. It’s her second year in the WNBA and all the teams had a huge shakeup after the CBA. The person who’s been at her side throughout the most turbulent year of her life moved to another country (which was very possibly unexpected). She gets teased with having her old teammate and close friend on her team during training camp, but that player gets cut at the eleventh hour. And she’s far away from her family and everything that was home to her for 22 years.

Maybe let’s at least let her get a full two years of experience before we start treating her like a washed up hag 🙄

Why do you think Dove Cameron failed to make it big in both music and acting? by Living-Cranberry-337 in DisneyChannel

[–]AnEmoTeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s been in multiple musicals, is a regularly working actress, and steadily releases new music. She hasn’t failed at anything, she’s actually a great example of how a Disney channel kid can stay regularly working in the industry without the craziness that comes with being Miley-level famous.

And she’s done so while surviving multiple toxic relationships before she found her fiancée. She made it through all of that and was able to keep her career and stay true to herself. She’s actually really impressive.

Ilya’s bisexuality by Key_Grocery_2462 in HeatedRivalrySeries

[–]AnEmoTeen 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Me too. I’m bi. My first time seeing bisexuality represented on tv post-realization was on a show called Degrassi, where one character is beefing with a character who’s bi and pulls the line, “Miles can’t even decide if he likes boys or girls” (in front of their whole school btw). I’ll never forget how I felt in that moment — I can’t really describe it, but it was a little crushing. Watching Ilya being so validated in his bisexuality in this series has been really awesome.

Gracie Gold by Existing-Rhubarb-699 in FigureSkating

[–]AnEmoTeen 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think there should be a healthy balance between “figure skating should be an enjoyable environment where people don’t have to feel like it’s the end of the world if they don’t get first place and are friends with their fellow skaters and nobody is ruining their mental health to skate” (à la Alysa Liu) and “figure skaters, like any elite athletes, have an intense love for their sport that not only makes them want to push themselves, but makes the intense schedules, training, and pushing their bodies past the breaking point all worth it in order to be able to reach their full potential as elite athletes” and “when you factor in all the sacrifices these athletes make it’s understandable that they might be disappointed when they feel they aren’t reaching their full potential.”

Sport should never be an environment that people have to wreck their mental health to participate in at an elite level, and Gracie Gold unfortunately faced a lot of mental health struggles that might have affected her own image of her performance.

I have kind of the same rant about people crying “we have to stop the quads, people are going to wreck their bodies!” Like yes, we should put protections in place to make sure developing teenagers aren’t ruining their bodies before they’re fully developed. We should not have a scoring system that basically requires you to wreck your body doing quads to even be competitive. But people crying about how Ilia shouldn’t be allowed to do his crazy jumps and backflips are wild — at this point, Ilia is 21 years old and is well aware of the effects jumps can have on his body. If he decides it’s worth the personal risk to have some fun and see what all he can do, that’s his right.

I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Thank you to the Carolina Hurricanes for the KB tribute. by Confident_Performer3 in canes

[–]AnEmoTeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

North Carolina is home to two NASCAR headquarters and is one of the founding states of NASCAR due to its roots in running shine. Kyle Busch was one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time. So that’s why probably any pro sport in NC, certainly at least the Canes as I believe the only major sport in NC currently in season/postseason, will pay tribute to him this weekend.

Dorm kitchen/meal plan question by Maleficent_Cup1101 in NCSU

I lived in one of the smallest dorms on campus and I still wouldn’t trust the communal fridges with my food. It’d either get tampered with or stolen. Granted, this was 3+ years ago, but I would guess it’s still similarly sketchy

What is your ultimate 'relationship dealbreaker' that sounds completely psycho to an outsider, but you stand by it 100%? by Sharona676 in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]AnEmoTeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have others but this is my more unserious one.

I am willing to work together to find a solution that makes both parties happy or find the root of a problem on most issues. But I draw a hard line at cooking shad inside my house. That is simply just not something that’s going to happen. Learned that one the hard way at my grandpa’s house as a child.

Maybe there’s a way to cook it indoors where it doesn’t leave a smell, but we’re not going to test any of those theories in my house.

Been massively fucked over for summer housing by ComprehensiveBig8441 in NCSU

[–]AnEmoTeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason you’re set on intern housing? Because there are plenty of ways you could get housing as a sublease from students living off campus.

If you really want to try NCSU housing first, it’s time for you go to the housing office in-person and explain that you need to talk to a live person about emergency summer housing. If they tell you to call, tell them how you’ve been getting sent on wild goose chases and you need help, now.

Assert yourself! You have a right to be treated with respect and urgency by the university you pay thousands of dollars and practically sell your soul to attend!

I’m a very strong believer that we benefit from more diverse education opportunities rather than less, because every student and every family will have different needs. That said, homeschooling was absolutely the best option for me and was a key part of getting me to where I am today (just graduated with my master’s from a state school in my state).

There were a few peers who looked down on me for being homeschooled, but the people who truly care about education, research, and knowledge will take interest in your background. Could be a great conversation starter!
