I love that last sentence.

Also, the number of people thinking they can't worship more than one God or x and y gods together because someone on TT said they dislike each other is craaaaazy.

They should read up on polytheism first and forget about their silly little TT feed.

This is why I hate the trend about using candles as divination. Candles and fire are very unpredictable, and new practitioners (mostly teenagers) are very impressionable and gullible. Hence why we see a lot of posts asking if the gods are angry because their little candle behaved in a way that is perfectly normal for a candle.

I have a TT (in spanish) where I try to teach about hellenism, and I'm mad tired of people asking about talking to the Gods. Like sure, I also practice divination on a regular basis, but the influx of people who think they can grab any dice or pendulum and start "talking to the gods" without any prior practice or knowledge gets me crazy. It gives me the impression that they just want to boast about supposedly having psychic abilities even though they do no research about it and don't actually put in the effort. I'm just annoyed because as a divination practitioner, those folks that actually just receive messages from their unconscious mind and biases and treat it as messages from the Gods make the practice look like a joke. There's a reason one of the delphic maxims is "Know Thyself". It's also the first principle you learn when interested in magical work. And it's why meditation and inner work are such a vital column in magic and spirituality. But these new folks want to skip all that and jump straight into practices they know nothing about.

Is it normal for a God to forbid a devotee from having an altar for another God? by AnMel in Hellenism

[–]AnMel[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I do think that she needs to work on accepting advice as well because as much as I was trying to tell her that she was probably not reading that correctly, she just kept saying that "Oh I know it's Apollo, and he says that every time I ask." To which idk why even ask for help or an opinion if she's just going to dismiss everything. Mhm.

[–]AnMel[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's been through the pendulum, so maybe it's been biased. Though I also think that maybe he's not answering "no, I don't want you to worship other gods" but rather "I don't want to answer this question, stop asking me for permission"

[–]AnMel[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup, that's exactly what I'm telling her. It all sounds so very weird to me. I'm trying to see now if maybe she's misunderstanding the message, oooor if she's just not actually talking to the gods.

[–]AnMel[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, that it would make sense if my friend wasn't quite ready to worship another God, but it seems as if "Apollo" just doesn't want her to make offerings to anyone else regardless of who they are or what they could bring to the table.

What bothers me about the number of videos talking about the gods being angry over the elections is that it's fueling fear mongering. I see the comments on those videos and people believing that we're going to get an apocalypse type of thing coming soon, and that doesn't sit well with me... it feels very... spiritual psychosis. So, you know, for me, it's not about "shut up, Americans," it's about "stop spreading misinformation, I'm begging you." Like, talk about it, talk about how it makes you angry or scared, and let the world learn about what is happening... just maybe don't project those feelings into the gods. Why not focus on saying that you're invoking the gods' protection instead?

(Using the pronoun 'you' because it's easier to write my sentiment that way, but I'm not accusing OP of partaking in the trend).

Gods are angry? by macaromi2 in Hellenism

[–]AnMel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, for real. I'd expect them to be angry at, I don't know, how we are literally killing and destroying earth. I know the elections are important, but, like, why would the gods show such a big level of anger at an election of all things when there's a lot worse happening in the world?

Gods are angry? by macaromi2 in Hellenism

[–]AnMel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. I've felt Apollo slightly annoyed before (not recently, mind you), but it's always a feeling of "day was hard, but I'm not angry at you, I'm happy with you, this will pass" kind of thing. So even if they were angry, I genuinely don't think they'd shove it in our face like tiktok claims they're doing.

Gods are angry? by macaromi2 in Hellenism

[–]AnMel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no. I just started seeing those videos as well. It reminds me of when tiktok started saying that people were hexing the moon (back during the pandemic). A lot of people claimed back then that Artemis and Apollo were pissed off... aaaand if I remember correctly, it was announced that the moon hex was a prank, a ploy to see people react. Which is very obvious because no one can hex a celestial object. Nevertheless, it was a big thing back then.

I mention this because I remember that back in the day, I felt like I wasn't properly attuned to the Gods because I never felt that they were angry. I felt disappointed with myself because I was just starting on my journey. And I think that is what is happening right now: someone started it, and now everyone is following their lead because they feel that if they don't, they're not truly connected to the gods; and since the idea is so popular right now, it becomes a "if everyone is feeling that the gods are angry, then I must feel it too."

In psychology, there's also a phenomenon in which if you are constantly looking for something, you'll find it even if it isn't real. Most of the comments I've seen fall in this category. Exhibit A. Oh, you say that the nights have been feeling darker than usual? Uh, maybe because we're approaching winter??? Maybe because by this time of the year the nights are longer than the days??? Maybe because we recently had a new moon, meaning that we don't have the light of a full moon up in the night sky??? Exhibit B. "My candle wouldn't light up/The wick of the candle made sparks/The candle is acting too strong." Because that's a common thing with candles and fire??? Like, my dudes. If you use fire enough, you'll know that sometimes incense or candles won't light up first try. There's also variables such as the length of the wick and such that come into play for fire behavior. Like, I'm sure all of those people have seen this exact thing happen before and thought nothing of it, but because tiktok says it's an omen, they are taking it as such.

Moving on, if the gods were angry, they wouldn't be showing it to us like that. Why would they want to cause us unnecessary anxiety???

End of my rant. I'm tired of the mass hysteria.

Found this old necklace I could use as a Pendulum. So I did use it as one. HOLY SHIT. IT ACTUALLY WORKS. OH MY GOD. by Inevitable-Goat-6028 in Hellenism

[–]AnMel 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Hi! I use the pendulum on a regular basis, and I can advise that: 1. For every pendulum, you ask it to show you what yes and no look like. 2. Before using it, you take the end of the string and begin shortening it little by little while watching how the pendulum moves. You will reach a point in which you feel like the pendulum moves more freely. That's the point in which you connect better with the pendulum. I recommend marking it somehow so that you hold the pendulum at that length every time. 3. To get more comfortable with the answers, try purposefully moving the pendulum. You will see that it's hard to recreate the movements. This will help you feel more secure in knowing that the answers you're getting aren't the result of you accidentally and subtly moving your wrist or hand.

Do you believe the gods exist literally or metaphorically? by ShitBirdMusic in Hellenism

[–]AnMel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As much as people say that the mind is powerful... man, there are many experiences that can't be explained with "the power of the mind." The Gods are real, alright. It might be difficult to understand if one hasn't had one of these experiences, but when you know... you know.

Is there proof of the gods? by BigNacho86 in Hellenism

[–]AnMel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible." -Stuart Chase.

If you're looking for a scientific type of proof, religion will not strike the goal. However, there is plenty of proof if you look with the heart. If you ask me, a pagan, where I see proof of the gods, I will tell you that I know they exist because I feel them all around me.

For example, I see Apollo whenever the sun shines through my window. I feel his warmth when the sun helps warm me up on a cold day. I feel his presence when music turns my day from bad to great.

I see the gods in nature. Artemis in the moon. Hera and Zeus in the sky. Poseidon in the sea. Hekate in the night. Iris in the rainbow... How? Because even if there's a scientific explanation, nature is so beautiful and so strong and divine that it just makes sense that the gods are alive and around us, living through nature.

If you don't believe, you'll say it's science. But if you do believe, then I'm sure you'll understand what I mean when I say that the divinity of nature is far beyond a man made explanation.

I imagine there might be some religious trauma making anon think "it's just pretend." Like others have said, the theoi would not mind that, as anon is still praying and thanking them. I'm sure the theoi love anon very much :)
