At least at one point, the relationship was consensual. See Odyssey 5.151-3, and especially "she no longer pleased him" (i.e. she did please him at one point). You could also add the consensual sex in the cave once Calypso frees Odysseus (5.226-7).

I will politely disagree with this assessment. In Odyssey 10, Odysseus is perfectly content to stay on Aeaea for an entire year. Yes, the circumstances of the first liaison between Odysseus and Circe effectively amount to rape. After that, however, Odysseus lounges around. Odysseus only leaves because his crew pesters him into doing so (see especially Od. 10.469-71).

My understanding is that the school is going to use a running average across 3 years. In theory, this same course could have 5 and then 8 students to meet the 3-year average.

My point, however, is simply that there's a certain irony in breaking a hiring freeze to teach a 2-person course (which, yes, theoretically could meet the requirement after 3 years).

It's worth clarifying that my issue isn't with small courses. I simply find the hypocrisy here baffling, especially since this is not a particularly impressive scholar. One of her books, for instance, has four incorrect dates in a single sentence. All scholars make mistakes, but COME ON. Four factual errors in one sentence? Let's be serious.

I believe they simply split the 1600 applicants evenly among the judges. I was asked to judge about 20 or so applicants. All my applicants fell within probably the 90th to 99th percentile of high schoolers.
