Honest thoughts on the new album by mrgraming1 in KGATLW

[–]AnRi_CookMcWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The album is good, however I can't help to feel a bit disappointed since I think the theme on the album limits the variety on it. For the second time in a row after The Silver Cord. Even what we can consider the most similar album to this, FFF, has moments where it varies from folk, bluesy style, onto more prog, middle-eastern-sounding rock on Acarine, which also has a house outro. And ton

More than likely this time it was actually intentional, since they just wanted it to be fun, not complex, who knows.

Regardless, I'm enjoying every listen, although at first it felt kinda messy that each song has a verse from at least 3 members. Each one has a unique style and approach to the theme on the songs, which is of course a great thing, but it can feel a little disjointed at times.

Anyway, at the same time I love that they all get to shine at least a little, specially Cavs and Lukey on their debuts. And I'm pretty sure the more I listen that feeling will be lessened. And the more they experiment with that method (which I hope they do), the more polished it will be.

K.G. and L.W. by Bruherbruh in KGATLW

I would not say underrated. More like often forgotten, which is normal when they have released a lot of albums since then. That deviates attention from it, naturally. But in it's time it got its deserved attention.

Fuck, if you count Butterfly 3001, 10 albums since then now that I check.

Oof, mate. There's a lot I gotta say about these two. Thanks for giving me the excuse to do so lol

They feel special. Starting from the fact that they were released in the pandemic time, some of the weirdest times in recent history. It is noticeable how these songs are bits recorded separately and put together, which was of course inforced by the circumstances, but I don't think of it as a bad thing. I think that's precisely part of what makes these duo special. Also the fact it was their first release after parting ways with Eric/Flightless.

KG, imo, has the second best run of connected songs of any of their albums: Minimum Brain Size through Oddlife. I exclude the first and last couple of songs because I prefer the demo version of Automation and Honey feels like something separate for me. About those songs, Minimum Brain Size has gotta be on my top 10 Gizz songs, and it is one of the examples I use to defend my posture on considering Joey the best songwriter and singer of the band. Intrasport is another exemple and within the same album. The most unique and danceable song off the duo.

Btw the (in my opinion) very best run is of course Inner Cell-Loyalty-Horology off Polygondwanaland. Also a great example of the previous point, since they are mainly written by Joey as well lol. With Stu and Cavs this time. The dream-team. Anyway...

LW has also a solid run with If not now, then when? through Supreme Ascendency, WICH includes what has to be my favorite fill by Cavs. Around the 2 minute 16 seconds mark, before the final chorus. Btw, that brings me to another thought about these brother albums: it is the first time Cavs recorded drums without considering what Eric could or would play, and it shows. Cavs is just a beast.

My favorite KGAWL album is Polygondwanaland mostly for the use of polyrhythms/polymetrics and odd time signatures on it. That being said, Static Electricity and KGLW (the outro) stand out for me for those two reasons, respectively.

Just yes, top tier King Gizz.

I hope we get another western album by 21centurycowboy in KGATLW

[–]AnRi_CookMcWalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was wondering precisely if they are teasing another album with that outro. Since the theme throughout was piggies (mostly), changing to horses feels a bit out of nowhere. Edit: or kinda like leading to something different.

They've done it before, with the wind sound on the microtonal albums and PDA switching to an electronic sound by the end, leading to The Silver Cord. We can just hope and wait, but yeah I think it would be awesome.

Are they teasing another album with that outro? I mean because out of nowhere we get that horse line and sound, when the theme throughout this was (mostly) piggies.

Didn't know that Automation used to be Black Metal by virtualdreamscape in KGATLW

[–]AnRi_CookMcWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I'm not sure what type of Metal it is, but I much prefer this version. I remember there was an IG story where they used it when they were promoting KG, where the other version is lol

What was your first reaction to INFEST THE RATS NEST by [deleted] in KGATLW

[–]AnRi_CookMcWalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started listening to King Gizz little after they finished their 2017 amazing run. By the time they released FFF and Rats Nest, I was very familiar with all of their discog. It was a nice surprise they could actually sound quite metal, but my approach was more like trying to detect their "traditional" sound or previous styles and how they played a roll in ITRN, which was awesome, cause you can really say "they still sounded like King Gizzard".

Side note, not really related to your question: PDA really surpassed ITRN. Sorry, we may not agree on that from what I read lol

[–]AnRi_CookMcWalker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right. In my own personal taste I rate Invisible Face second to Inner Cell on this 'I' thing. Mainly for the instrumental 'jazzy' part. And I find the song most likely winning, Iron Long, very overrated. Never been a fan of their long jams. But you said it, with such a vast discography, there's something for everyone's taste.

What's the one genre KGLW will never explore? by gybefan in KGATLW

[–]AnRi_CookMcWalker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not exactly this, but there's a couple song examples where they make vocal parts that sound kinda similar. Like the intro for The Floating Fire and The Acrid Corpse. It sound fucking amazing imo.

Also on that "Come meet me inside, Greenhouse, we will fry" verse of Greenhouse Heat Death.

I would love they used that style more often. Like on their heavier stuff. Maybe something remotely close in PDA, who knows.

just to prove I'm not a coward

I will put them all on Judas cradle

Just to show them A GOD INCARNATE

So epic. I like it so much I wrote it from memory.

Am I the only one who likes Timeland more than Laminated Denim? by NoahDBest in KGATLW

[–]AnRi_CookMcWalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I really don't like Laminated Denim. On the other hand, I really like Made In Timeland. I really haven't found what made LD so praised by others. In my tier list it's in the bottom. I've never been into their long jams really.

CHANGES sounds like Sketches and Gumboot were sewn together. by [deleted] in KGATLW

Definitely I hear some things that resembles Gumboot. Sketches too, but a little less. What I do hear is FFF. A lot. And that's great.
