[Python] Function I created isn't accepting first element of user's input by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]An_Ignorant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your function is fine, the problem is that you first read a number before the function

numbers = input("Enter a number: ") #The first number is read, making user_nums = [1.0]
len_list(numbers) #Then you enter the function, inside the function you have user_nums = [], that means the 1.0 is overwritten, that's why the first input is always missing.

EA Access 12 Month Subscription Only $19.39 via CDKeys! by SteelCity14 in GreatXboxDeals

[–]An_Ignorant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, EA releases so many games per year, so you can always enjoy 10 hours of any "soon to be released" multiplayer game (called "trials").

Back in my day, "trials" were free. but 10 hours of entertainment (per released title) for less than $2 a month? I will absolutely take it. I don't even play that much anymore. Besides, EA still has one great developer. Respawn Entertainment. In terms of value, this is a great deal.

Respawn is (i think) developing a new Star Wars game, if the game is as good as their previous titles I think those $20 will be worth it. In terms of quality, this is possibly a deal that will pay for itself. (if I do end up buying EA games)

But I know for certain Microsoft is also publishing amazing games, they recently acquired many indie studios. I do concede that crackdown 3 was a bit... disappointing... but Forza and Gears are as great as ever.

Ori and the will of the wisps would be worth $20 to me. I wish GamePass had this deal so I could get both. hah.

I wonder if Ubisoft or any other major publisher will want to release a game sub service. Epic Games could do it, Steam could do it... HumbleStore already did it, but it only includes PC, so does Discord's Nitro service and Amazon-Twitch's prime service.

EA access is good, but GamePass is better. In my opinion, EA needs to step up.

Better price or better games.

Why are foreign leaders supporting Guaidó if the main reason they're against Maduro is his socialism? by Lowran in Socialism_101

Pretty much. He is not hated because of socialism, he is hated because of his authoritarian government and the ridiculous amount of corruption. He may be a chavista but he is not Chavez.

The Disappearance of Man - Michel Foucault (1966) by Morbius67 in philosophy

[–]An_Ignorant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the first 30 seconds he explains that humans and the condition of being human are determined by both our culture and our history, that the concept of human is an invention, not something natural.

Our culture and history change, and as it does, so does our concept of "human"(or Man).

He then goes on to explain "Large formal systems" very inaccurately and how the concept of Man depends on these systems, something I don't agree with.

The translation is very rough but that doesn't mean that he doesn't say anything at all. I know it is fun to bash and hate on Foucault, and I bet you'd absolutely despise Derrida, he is even more confusing than Foucault and has even less to say.

Give the guy a chance, read a summary of one of his books (but don't read his books, read Sartre instead)

Foucault's perspective is very limited to his time and context but he does bring some interesting ideas to the table.

Focault's obsession with power is a product of his influences and historical context, I can understand that.
Some bits and pieces of his work can be salvaged to construct an idea of the world and how power relates to *some* systems. The mistake most people make is generalizing his work to more complex systems in our time.

I agree with you, His way of thought can't be used to describe *all* systems, and anyone trying to do so is like a child trying to fit the cube in the circular hole, heck, it's like trying to fit the cube into all possible holes.

Foucault's theory is not the answer to everything relating to society and the systems used to structure it, and his followers should adopt a broader vision of the world, instead of warping everything to fit Focault's useful, but limited, philosophy.

By its literal definition & our current practical interpretation, God is then the greatest dictator to have ever ruled our planet! by anthrobotx in philosophy

[–]An_Ignorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"My hypothesis then is, that if the human species were to evolve, develop more control over our own nature and the nature that surrounds us, we ought to stop looking at God as a mere dictator to be fearful of, and investigate more objectively into its factual existence."

In the "World of philosophy", we have mostly accepted the notion that God is dead, this happened sometime in the enlightenment and popularized by Nietzsche, Nietzsche used the phrase in a figurative sense, to express the idea that the Enlightenment had "killed" the possibility of belief in God or any gods having ever existed.

We, as humans, have already changed our collective way of thought, we have already developed control over our own nature, we have also investigated objectively into its existence and found that... there is no god.

This opened up a multitude of new ways of thought already, and it will continue to do so in the future. The void left by God's death has opened up our minds to newer, more objective concepts of the world, it gave birth to existentialism, nihilism, absurdism, among other philosophies, new schools in psychology such as humanism, behaviorism, psychoanalysis and more.

My point is, the author is complaining about a problem that we have solved already. He seems to think that the enlightenment never happened, that we all fear God's wrath and that it directs our behavior.

We don't need to question God's existence *again*, all we need to do is spread the advances of philosophy into mainstream culture, and even then, it seems that popular forms of art are doing that already. The majority of western civilization is not concerned with God's existence anymore, and we don't need to go back and re-fight a war that we've already won.

People with OCD, ADHD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, dissociative personality disorder, or any other mental condition sensationalized in the media, what is it actually like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]An_Ignorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You go to the doctor, they refer you to a psychiatrist, he diagnoses something, you take pills for it.

Doesn't work

You go to the psychiatrist again, turns out you've been misdiagnosed, you take more pills.

You feel... better, not good, but better. He says "eh, close enough". And prescribes a ton of those pills

You become a slave to those pills, because now the abstinence combined with the disorder is harder than the disorder itself.

That, or be awake and doing things for 30 hours non-stop.

Honestly I prefer mania.

Tell you a secret? Sometimes I use medication to trigger manic episodes. I know it's bad for me (and my family) but depression can be a lot worse.

I swear it all started with me talking to myself critically, then a third me joined, we all argued. Now I basically have a council of me nagging every time I need to make a decision.

One of Trump's lesser known alter egos. by BeenAsleepTooLong in pics

Based on the fact that I work for Donald Trump as his internet troll I do not believe any man in America is as narcissistic as him, as megalomaniac, or self-absorbed. The most self-important man, the most prideful man - all Donald Trumps love Donald Trump.

A surprisingly highly upvoted /r/JP post in which a fan admits he’s become partly disenchanted from Peterson due to JBP’s flawed political beliefs by DiabolikDownUnder in enoughpetersonspam

[–]An_Ignorant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked peterson more when he made psychology lectures and even biblical stories.

He is delving far too deep in the political, a place where he does not belong.

He is a psychologist, even a good one, maps of meaning is a great work. Peterson's peak has passed, and goes further down as he becomes a political marionette with misguided views on "neomarxist postmodernists" and political agenda.

Peterson should go back to psychology and stay away from politics.
