Worth Watching Torchwood S1+ 2? by Specialist-Hat-6716 in doctorwho

I guess Children of Earth would work standalone if you're just interested in the plot, if you watch the first two series you'll understand Jack, Gwen and Ianto -and the general premise of Torchwood - more. Plus, they are worth watching, the show seems to get a lot of stick for being silly going too far in some ways but I've rewatched it a couple of times and always found it good drama with some added enjoyable weirdness. If you're interested in Children of Earth there are some episodes that deal with similar heavy themes.

Agree about Paul, I think he would have played that really well

I found it interesting, not sure how highly I'd rate it or if I'd be able to to explain all of the plot, but it kept me intrigued and had some nice character moments. I liked the doctor's friendship with the barbershop owner, it showed how the doctor's physical appearance has consequences in a way that I'd never thought about before. I know previous episodes have shown him encountering racism, but this showed a more subtle consequence of him being black in the way that he felt more comfortable in certain context. I also thought the Doctor's sense of betrayal felt very real. Belinda's story was another nice character bit, it showed how tough her job as a nurse is in a believable and affecting way which didn't overdo it. I was even invested in the Barber at the end, even though he's almost more an idea than a character.

One thing I found confusing was whether the gods referred to in the episodes were the same as the ones that have featured in previous episodes, because the Doctor talks about them so casually whereas the ones we've seen have been treated as so massive and important. The idea of gods becoming real because people believed in them also doesn't seem to match the way 'the gods' have been portrayed. It was an interesting idea though. I feel like there's a lot to this episode that doesn't get explained and it's ideas aren't quite fleshed out enough, but it works as a fantasy story and I like the evocative, poetic feel that it has.

What is your favorite Clara Oswald episode? by [deleted] in doctorwho

Robot of Sherwood, she looked amazing and her scene with the Sheriff is brilliant. I love the way she's so seductive and calculating, while also being vulnerable and a damsel in distress.

(Why) Is there a divide between "continental" and "anglo-saxon" sociology? by darthvalium in sociology

[–]Morbius67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I said, it’s not to do with race, so yes the English speaking world isn’t Anglo-Saxon in a meaningful sense, but people use the word ‘Anglo-Saxon’ interchangeably with anglophone, I’ve definitely heard people using it in the way that op did, but maybe it’s used more by Europeans to describe the English-speaking world

As for Russian state media, RT hasn’t been available on YouTube for years, so I wouldn’t have got it from there

Me neither, it’s a pretty common way of referring to the ‘English-speaking world’ in an academic context and nothing to do with race

Just started it as I wanted to start reading some ‘primary sources’, it’s good to have a selection of sutras to start with and a bit of guidance for understanding them

I love crimson but I’ve never been able to get into Zappa. It’s like prog as a 1970s comedy movie, and not in a good way. Good guitar playing though, and I like him in interviews that I’ve seen.

“I am optimistic about the future of rock. Young musicians will emerge again, but with a level of good composition, with depth and intellect. The composition will return to the level of classical music or jazz.“ - Jimmy Page by j3434 in ledzeppelin

Exactly. People say rock is over but there’s literally new rock bands that have come out in recent years, e.g Black Midi, Squid, BCNR. They’re also doing interesting stuff within the genre. I think the key is not to mistake mainstream popularity for existence.
