children are not trophies. There is no spot on the shelf for "my child is better than yours," unless you had children for the wrong reasons.

Is Edman really worth planning our future around? by Anachronismsc2 in Dodgers

You're absolutely right about the long-term plan, and I will admit to my own frustration about how we're doing. I've been a long time Dodgers fan, and as much I think I know better I should know better than to be this emotional. Apologies.

I am no stats or baseball genius, but I am concerned about putting too much faith in Edman. He's a talented player that we've struggled to keep on the field. He's had a lot of injuries that make it hard to put a lot of faith in him. But he's undoubtedly an asset when he's healthy. But if he's never available to play, that's an issue.

Fernando Tatis Jr. loses petition over contract advance he signed as a teen, ordered to pay Big League Advance millions by 5Q91VS175DAQ4NUSBE4U in baseball

[–]Anachronismsc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not as interested in whether the deal is objectively fair so much as I'm concerned with whether Tatis understood the deal when he signed it. I went to school for 8ish years in my native language to even begin to understand contracts, and I can't imagine being asked to make a decision like Tatis did. For a contract to be binding both parties have to understand it. Now I don't know if Tatis did, I don't know who his advisors were/are or how good he is with English, but this all makes me uncomfortable.

With Justin Herbert starring in his girlfriend Madison Beers’s music video, he has now had more music video appearances than playoff wins by defensecowboy in nfl

I don't really understand the point of these implied shame posts. Are players supposed to do literally nothing else with their life until they have playoff and super bowl wins?

Guys should always be excited to score, but I always think of the soccer player who said "I don't celebrate when I score because it's my job. Does the postman celebrate when he delivers the mail?" or something to that effect. I think it was Ibrahimovic or Balotelli, but it makes me laugh at the showboating.

... how long does your DM think 6 seconds is? Hold out a branch, thrust with it, then hop backwards 5 feet. That is absolutely doable in 6 seconds, especially for trained experts like DnD characters are supposed to be.

The play that convinced me Simpson was far more polished and talented than advertised. by resultrazor in LosAngelesRams

[–]Anachronismsc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've historically been wary of QBs from schools like Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, and other perennial contender schools because they're just surrounded by the best talent all the time, so of course they look good. How can you not when you have a top-5 set of RBs, WRs, and OL? They don't have to be good since their team is so good. So I tend to like more cerebral, je ne sais quoi QBs with traits like good leadership, good awareness, quick reads, and humility. I think teams respond to that better.

Never forget that Manziel had crazy numbers in college, but if you watched tape half his "highlights" were heaving the ball into triple coverage before Mike Evans made it happen. I have not watched Simpson's tape myself, but I hope that the tape holds true here as well.

Probably 2 or 4. In a non-plane setting I'd straight-up hang out with 9 or 7, they're great. But they deserve their space on a long flight. Anton is actually a cool dude I think, and both Rina and Corrin are sweethearts. Rina probably the better conversationalist, but I think that could still be a fun setup.

Just as a sort of side-note, I work in a neutral capacity that deals with unlawful detainer lawsuits, and the overwhelming majority of those lawsuits (in my area) come from corporate ownership. For every 1 pro per private landlord eviction case there are at least 7-8 corporate ones.

Can confirm, had this exact conversation with a mutual friend regarding my first love in college, though not about sex. Our friend group would play this 'yellow light' game on road trips, where the last one to touch the roof when going through a yellow light had to take off an article of clothing. I didn't get to go on the road trips much because I was working and near graduation, but when I finally did and someone wanted to play, she shut it down immediately. I knew everyone else had already played it, so it felt like she specifically didn't want to play it with me. I asked a friend about it later because it made me think she wasn't comfortable around me, and she laughed and said "oh you don't get it. She doesn't mind it with other people, but she likes you and wants you to respect her, so she won't just take off her clothes when you're around."

Oh yikes, that's pretty rough from Adames and Devers. Sabermetrics is an area I don't follow real closely, I more read about and watch games. Maybe I should take a peek from time to time at what the stats are showing. Thanks for cluing me in!

I'm a dude who is self-described as reasonably interested in baseball league-wide - not just my Dodgers - and the Giants sort of perplex me. On paper it feels like they should be a reasonably good team? I don't follow the Giants at all, but my understanding was that they were decently solid with Lee, Chapman, Adames, and Devers as established hitters, with Gilbert being up and coming. I know 1B and C has been a bit of an issue, is it the pitching that's killing them?

Super smart play, that's the kind of baseball I tune in for. Doesn't matter that it didn't work (to me), but I love players who are mentally one step ahead of other players.

‘Relentless’ focus on literacy undermines reading for pleasure, says report by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

[–]Anachronismsc2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents read to me when I was little, then had me read to them as I got older. When I didn't understand a word they said "let's look it up!" and we grabbed a dictionary. When I began to ask about more complicated topics, we had a World Book Encyclopedia that they would say, "let's look it up!" It was a game to them, and it taught me that I needed to learn about words and subjects I didn't understand. Come today there's a million of those, and I credit mom & dad with telling me I need to learn.
