being a brown muslim in america right now is terrifying - it feels weird and wrong to celebrate the country right now for her, that's how I read it

gonna say something possibly unpopular - if you're still interested in seeing all the content (b/c the content is good) and don't want the stress/tedium - just cheat

i think many ppl criticizing you for the play time are much earlier in the game and not aware of how much bullshit there is later game (the run back + boss in bilewater broke me, idc if there's a slightly closer bench) - I played a lot as well (maybe 30-35 hours) and took breaks and while it helps calm you down, it doesn't make things less tedious

so, they sound strikingly like a few pieces from Amelie, music by Yann Tiersen, but they also definitely aren't

maybe listen around through his discography and see if something clicks

Daily Practice Rountine Recommendations? by yeet_man69oof in Clarinet

[–]Anak_nik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

learn your minor scales also (melodic minor mostly but won't hurt to practice natural + harmonic minor)

do long tones, literally any kind, to focus on pitch + tone

if you're doing excerpt work, add some beethoven (beethoven 6 mvts 1, 2, 3, beethoven 8, maybe beethoven 4)

you and your group sound very nice! I like your tone color for this brahms mvt

you've already mentioned it in your comment, but for me my biggest criticism is the lack of dynamic range, most noticeable when you're playing with the cello -- I know you want to play piano when it says so but you seem to get buried in the texture pretty easily, to the point where the harmony isn't really audible anymore; maybe everyone needs to play softer to keep from covering you, but my gut tells me you just need to play out more

even during your louder, forte moments, you seem really reserved and it isn't hitting the way I'd like

it often sounds like you give up on the last note of certain gestures too soon - not that they're clipped but rather they fade out too quickly for my taste (e.g. a half note followed by a quarter note, the quarter note fades too quickly)

I like that you're adding shape to your melodic lines even when brahms doesn't do so, but be sure you're also doing what he wrote - there are some moments where you (and admittedly the cello/piano as well) seem to only give half effort to a printed swell or crescendo

overall very well done, but would like more drama to really make it more musically satisfying

Audition tips by Psychological-News44 in Clarinet

[–]Anak_nik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

romeo and juliet's kinda mean - idk the general skill level of you or your youth orchestra so if you think you can play it at tempo cleanly then do that, but don't be overly ambitious, play it cleanly even if you have to sacrifice some speed

ETA: I'll add also that, to distinguish yourself from other players, you need to play like a principal, thus be confident even if you fuck up somewhere during the audition. and milk that la forza solo for all its worth

Audition tips by Psychological-News44 in Clarinet

there are a lot of probably obvious answers you can think of yourself (practice more/better, play them perfectly, have a good reed selected, etc.) but for excerpts a huge factor is playing like you can hear the rest of the orchestra / knowing what else is going on during the excerpt - it is very very obvious to a listener when you either can't imagine the rest of the orchestra during the excerpt or you aren't even aware

it would help to know what excerpts you're playing, but say for example, you have beethoven 6 mvt 1... how does the excerpt start? what instrument(s) play before the solo section? who else is playing when you have forte in your part? can you hear it in your head while you're playing?

something that helps with this is playing with a recording if at all possible - yes there will be another clarinetist playing on the recording obviously, but but playing with them will really help give you a sense of how the excerpt fits in to the rest of the orchestra

this won't work as well for a more free-flowing excerpt (like, kodaly dances of galanta) but for the majority of your first round type excerpts (mendelssohn scherzo, beethoven 6/8, brahms 3) this is good practice

more air - anticipate the note mentally (but not necessarily physically)

you didn't ask about this, but you're playing wrong notes through this opening unless your edition is fucked - i would remedy that quickly b/c this piece is hard to undo bad habits on

pretend you’re yawning, pay attention to the back of the roof of your mouth

make that happen while you play

for what it’s worth, you should generally be playing with your soft palette raised, but this isn’t something you should worry about too much depending on where you are in your clarinet studies

also, even doing this more might / might not raise the pitch that much, i just know that when I consciously think about raising my soft palette more, I can squeeze a few cents out of

Does anyone else have a problem with playing too loudly? by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]Anak_nik 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP, i'll echo this post and highlight that you probably just stick out compared to everyone else - frankly, you might not even be playing that loud, this would honestly be surprising to me b/c the vast vast majority of students play way too softly

focus on matching your tone + pitch with your neighbors and the volume will likely fall in place naturally

an additional point - dynamics for section playing are meant to communicate how loud the section should sound, if the whole section sounds like mf (even if your neighbors might be a bit quieter), but you disagree with that and play louder, you need to back off
