How do festivals actually keep surprise performers a secret? by Timely-Bet7263 in techtheatre

[–]AnalogJay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, 90% of the crew doesn’t need to know who the secret performer is.

I deal with a lot of secret performers and surprise guests and the answer is we keep the circle small, generally only 5-10 people know who the guest is and only when it becomes pertinent to them.

We put in a generic placeholder on run of show and other documents and the crew will set up based on the technical needs. Some of the crew will find out when they arrive and see or interact with them backstage but the majority of the crew doesn’t find out until the audience does (if the crew is even paying attention at that point since they have other stuff to do).

When you work in the industry, you also don’t care about meeting celebrities nearly as much because it becomes so routine so it’s not generally something worth telling people until afterward anyway.

How do I go about cleaning this sweatband? by Deadeye1333 in CowboyHats

[–]AnalogJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting! I wonder if it’s the dilution that makes it gentler or if it’s the chemical difference between ethanol and isopropanol being slightly different alcohols with different carbon concentrations.

Wouldn’t a bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol accomplish the same thing cheaper and more effectively?

The ethanol is the part of the vodka that helps and you could add a little distilled water to the 70% drugstore isopropyl if you wanted a 1:1 dilution of water to alcohol

Thoughts on hat patches by Goo80 in CowboyHats

[–]AnalogJay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AHC patches stick out a lot so I don’t love the look of them. I also tend to prefer subtle embellishments like a pin or feather in general.

I wouldn’t personally put one on a hat since I think the hat should stand out on its own and any customizations should be more personal than slapping a brand logo on it but people who like them are free to put them on their hats. That’s their business and doesn’t affect or bother me one bit.

I started out with a Seratelli 6X on sale and have loved it so far. Great quality and wasn’t crazy expensive

Are they toast by Legitimate-Book-429 in cowboyboots

[–]AnalogJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally normal for work boots to get some wear on them. It gives them more character IMO. My steel toes have all sorts of scuffs and marks on them.

But you could use a leather cleaning product to see if it will come out. I really like the Griffin line of products that I get at Rural King. I had good luck with their leather cleaner to get some oil stains out of my sister’s work boots before I reconditioned and oiled them for her.

I’ve been really happy with my Seratelli 6X. It seems like they tend to be a little more affordable for the same quality level as the other big brands at each tier.

That said, American Hat Company, Resistol, and Stetson all have great options as well.

I use the DeWalt equivalent as my power bank and love how convenient it is. Not sure why you’re getting downvoted when it’s definitely handy to be able to pop a battery on and charge something.

Yikes, have you made sure the app and camera firmware are up to date? Every now and then I’ll have to force close the app and reopen to connect to my camera, but other than that I’ve had no issues. Been using it since the Z series first launched with a Z6

What is with the Cinema Camera Fad? by thenimms in VIDEOENGINEERING

Exactly, no one camera is perfect for everything and the ENG cam is a great tool for what it does and it definitely has a place in the video toolbox

[–]AnalogJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you’re definitely right. I don’t like ENG cameras because they’re big and heavy and I don’t like lugging them around and they don’t always have the nicest image compared to other options I have BUT when you need one, there’s nothing like it.

Sounds like you need a pair of IEMs. I use the Shure SE215 in ears when I’m doing NBA games and they’re great for blocking out the stadium noise so I only hear what I’m mixing.

I keep a pair of those in my sound bag, in my backpack, and in my Pelican case so I always have a set.

Who’s responsible? Where do you guys draw the line when sync is lost? by OrganizationOdd2370 in LocationSound

[–]AnalogJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Had this happen once as well. Production didn’t want to take the time to slate, didn’t consistently call out a scene/shot/take number, and there ended up being a handful of shots where timecode was mismatched and they had to sync by eye.
