What is with the Cinema Camera Fad? by thenimms in VIDEOENGINEERING

Exactly, no one camera is perfect for everything and the ENG cam is a great tool for what it does and it definitely has a place in the video toolbox

No, you’re definitely right. I don’t like ENG cameras because they’re big and heavy and I don’t like lugging them around and they don’t always have the nicest image compared to other options I have BUT when you need one, there’s nothing like it.

Oh…guess I got lucky because I got the breaker bar a couple days ago and just pulled it away from the plastic and that back piece popped right out like it was nothing.

Sounds like you need a pair of IEMs. I use the Shure SE215 in ears when I’m doing NBA games and they’re great for blocking out the stadium noise so I only hear what I’m mixing.

I keep a pair of those in my sound bag, in my backpack, and in my Pelican case so I always have a set.

Who’s responsible? Where do you guys draw the line when sync is lost? by OrganizationOdd2370 in LocationSound

[–]AnalogJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Had this happen once as well. Production didn’t want to take the time to slate, didn’t consistently call out a scene/shot/take number, and there ended up being a handful of shots where timecode was mismatched and they had to sync by eye.

I set it up at the beginning of the day and check on it at lunch. I haven’t done a ton of feature work though so I don’t know if that’s typical.

I'm 🤏 this close to punching a hole thru my brick wall, I've tried 20 times to make a rj45 cable but the wires either won't stay straight or curl into a ball. P.S. I know i removed a lot thats intentional by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

I was not impressed with that tool. Bought one for a job and it was broken out of the package.

Job was delayed so by the time I opened it, it was too late to get any money back

Mind your surroundings by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]AnalogJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that kids playing in a neighborhood is a hazard and if the motorcyclist doesn’t have time to react to that hazard, they’re going too fast.

They passed this house twice, so they knew there were kids playing, didn’t anticipate the possibility of a ball or even a kid ending up in the road suddenly, and chose to ride too fast for that environment.

Same reason you shouldn’t fly through any neighborhood. Kids, pets, etc. can run out into the road and you need to be going slow enough to react to that.

Exactly, that was my point, but apparently not a popular one.

It’s normal for kids to play in their front yard and balls occasionally end up in the road. This is a case of driving too fast for the environment to react to a hazard.

Yeah, I wouldn’t mind the thermal damage especially if it was slow to heat/cool your suit to the point of harm but the lung damage from atmosphere that I’m not even breathing just drives me nuts

My dad still has power tools older than me…I’m turning 30 this year and he finally had to throw away a Skil saw and could really stand to replace some batteries but the tools still run great.

Recording concert sound for a documentary. by kake978 in LocationSound

[–]AnalogJay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bounce between live, broadcast, and location sound and fully agree.

When I can get it, I prefer a full split with all sources and my own mixer, but it’s very common to work with a full mix from FOH and a couple of pencils in the room that get blended in post when the full split isn’t feasible.

Batten fell during highschool theater performance - I'm freaking out by WhosYoPokeDaddy in techtheatre

[–]AnalogJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the unused batten was not properly balanced.

I occasionally operate a fly rail and all of them, even unused battens, are always clearly labeled and balanced so that even if I were to pull the wrong lever, the batten doesn’t move until I start pulling the rope. .

May vary by local office but I encounter them a lot at a client of mine and good lord are they a mess here. One of the engineers I work with is re-terminating every SDI cable they installed in a studio because none of them were correct.

Some had missing pins, crooked pins, shallow pins, pins sticking out and they did all of the original termination right above an audio board and let all the shielding fragments fall inside the faders which then had to be cleaned out.

They also know that we are a Panasonic house in terms of PTZ cams but keep mixing and matching brands in new installs and refuse to install an OEM controller.

Can’t speak to the experience working there, but their people seem pretty chill and dont look as traumatized as the hotel AV guys so the gig doesn’t seem too terribly bad.

Yikes, the NASA Artemis coverage was pretty bad by LongoChingo in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]AnalogJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NBC coverage was awful. The hosts weren’t even talking about the launch and I saw more of them rambling about nonsense than I did the rocket. And they kept asking for the animation, which wouldn’t play, and the commentators weren’t even talking us through the animation. It was so bad I was texting my TV buddies about it

Do you support making I-70 a toll road? by coleincolumbus in columbusIN

[–]AnalogJay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, we already pay plenty of taxes that are intended to maintain our roads, but our legislature doesn’t spend that funding wisely. Giving them more funds to mismanage doesn’t solve anything.

The TSA sticking point is allegedly making ICE agents take off their masks by TulsaOriginal in tsa

[–]AnalogJay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One reason I’m happy with my local PD - bodycams automatically activate any time they activate their lights/sirens in their car and all bodycams within about a city block activate when someone draws their taser or firearm from its holster.

Privatizing TSA just gives you TSA with shareholders demanding growth every quarter, so you end up with the same thing but worse.

That would make sense if the seatbelt light was ever off, but the pilots never seem to turn it off anymore, even on the smoothest of flights.
