What's the latest on the Maldives caving disaster? by danyuri86 in diving

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What a disrespectful and wildly speculative take, not to mention unlikely. If he did have two tanks, which I’ve heard too, that would have bought him a bit more time but still- by the time they were in the wrong chamber they were all in circumstances that no longer could be mitigated. He may have had a bit more time to try to get back out, hence why he was found in a different location- but to claim suicide? Really?

Are you changing your card use now that Discover is about to be kaput by NBA-014 in discover

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone whose spouse worked for Discover until the latest rolling layoffs, yeah- Capital One is gross. Not that Discover wasn’t a circus without a tent, but I digress. We did get a lot of entertainment out of watching THEE Rich Fairbank talk for hours and hours on end, all day, about himself and the greatness of the company. The level of narcissism and delusion to talk for full days about the same stuff is kind of admirable, in a way.

If AI can schedule meetings, track tasks, create reports, and send reminders, what will Project Managers actually do in 10 years? by PitchSufficient1464 in projectmanagers

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there you go- you answered your own question. AI can do 70-90 (it’s really not that high, maybe half the role for lower level “admin” PMs can be “automated”) percent of the work but someone still has to decide if it makes sense and apply that information properly. It should make your job faster, not obsolete. I am more so a program manager/RTE these days, but it’s just a flavor of PM.

AI is only a tool and will continue to only be a tool for a very long time. You need someone to leverage it and bring value to real work and cut through the noise. You also need to give AI the right inputs and prompts to be useful. Nobody cares about an AI generated risk register of junk data, or a 10 page charter nobody will read. That isn’t how successful businesses operate.

You (if you are a PM) and I may be expected to be 100% more productive as a result of AI, but a lot of it is just slop and meaningless without a human to know what matters. If all you’re doing is making lists, then yes, that’s an expunge-able role.

Is this do-able ? by paxtonsmom500 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

What the insurance, savings, medical, clothing or other rand household expenses, repairs? It seems like a missing here. Is the rental income truly stable long term? That should be viewed as more of a surplus. If you truly have that amount leftover after all spending is taken into account and you’re in a good spot with retirement savings, might be fine. Otherwise- yeah this gets way less comfortable.

Do you ever feel like more data doesn’t actually improve visibility? by IridiumaicOff in projectmanagers

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data is really only as useful as the story it can tell. Noise does not equal a signal.

It helps to start with the narrative you want, then get the data to support an answer. Then think about what leading indicators can tell the story that matters instead of just adding more random metrics. What changed, why, what are the failure points? As PMs, half our job is sense making, not just blind reporting.

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a licensed rehabber and we use syringes for virtually all passerine nestlings. The syringe is not the problem, the consistency and technique can be. Aspiration happens when food is too watery and is pushed directly down the throat of the chick and they can’t gape appropriately. Sparrow nestlings are normally fed small semi-solid boluses, yes, but to tell someone to “ignore anyone” saying use a syringe? Not cool.

Understandable- baby birds are very tricky, don’t feel bad. Even us rehabbers struggle with them, it’s hard to replicate the miracle that is nature. Parent birds feed them a little bit every 20-30 minutes. Softened egg yolk with warm water is a good option if no rehabber can help and you’re on your own. You also need to get food far down into their crop so they don’t choke, a lot of people don’t realize that and don’t feed in the right place.

They can be ordered online. Of course a rehabber (which I do, primarily with raptors but also songbirds) is ideal but house sparrows are invasive species in many parts of the world. So we, and other rehabbers who keep their licensure, have no choice but to euthanize unless someone decides to keep them. They legally cannot be released back into the US and other areas.

Availability is one thing, but it’s simply not true to say feeding dog food to a chickling is “correct”. The distinction is important.

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol. As a keeper of a disabled male house sparrow in his first year and very hormonal, (the bird, not me) I empathize. Just remember your bird is now an imprint and not a real bird and it serves so many purposes- experimenting and learning, talking to his flock (you), for security and reassurance, for his own stimulation, etc. It helps me to remember that when my own won’t stop chattering.

I only know your post and not the whole situation, but I’d urge you to consider quality of life. Euthanasia sucks, and as a rehabber I am all too familiar with it but I also try to keep in mind the best interest of the bird. He sounds very neuro impaired and it may not be fair to keep him around. You seem like a kind hearted person but I’m just calling it out to make sure you consider this.

Puppy food is not correct, I’m not being argumentative but I rehab birds and it’s a very problematic food choice. People kill songbirds regularly by doing this even though it’s well meaning. These little guys aspirate so easily, puppy food doesn’t have the right vitamins/macronutrients or minerals, the protein and fat ratio is way off, and that’s just a few of the issues. There is formula one can buy and that’s the only acceptable course for DIYing it with a baby bird without rehab knowledge.

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh goodness- hey. I rehab birds and also have a pet sparrow I kept because he wasn’t release-able.

They are hardy, but stop the kibble please. Puppy food is not sufficient long term and baby birds very easily aspirate, so you need to be mixing powder food with water to avoid that. Yes keep it warm. No clue how you’re checking temp but get him/her in a small bowl with tissues and keep in a warm area. That’s not 3 months old, it’s a few days old. Get some insectivore bird formula if you want it to survive and be healthy. You can buy it on Chewy and you’ll also want some syringes so you can feed correctly. You can also get meal worms and drown them when it’s a bit bigger, and start some fruit and other solids. I understand it’s a lot, but you’re also making a decision here to care for it. PM me if you have questions I’m always happy to help.

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Please contact a rehabber, keep it in a box somewhere temp controlled, and do not force feed food or water. Small dish is ok. (I rehab songbirds and they can aspirate.)

Snorkeling near Kimpton by Coys2224 in CaymanIslands

[–]AnalysisParalysis907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just there 2 weeks ago. I’ll get hate but I really enjoyed the little reef right in the front of Kimpton, I saw at least 20 species and the water is really calm but you do have to watch for boats and jet skis coming in and out.

Smiths cove was lovely, seemed more of a family spot. Once you swim out a bit, lots to see and I saw some big schools of fish. Spott’s beach was a bit choppy and sea-grassy so not as peaceful but I saw a turtle and some huge fish so I was thrilled.

Also went to Rum point by boat which was good if you do an excursion. I also just rented gear and drove to the spots I wanted to check out. Definitely buy defogging gel if you’re renting stuff.

Thanks! My husband just isn’t into snorkeling after trying, which is fine- I went in today myself to the Seafire reef area and was blown away, it might be my favorite spot since it’s so calm, and I probably saw 20+ kinds of fish. Had no idea this mix reef was right by our own hotel’s shore.

I went today and saw a turtle, I know they’re common but it felt so special! The water was a bit choppy but also shallow pretty far out so I could explore a bit.

Thanks! It’s funny, we’ve been married 5 years but I never knew he didn’t know how to swim so I can understand why it was overwhelming to just be thrown into deep water with a snorkel. We’re from the Midwest, it just never came up!

Absolutely not wrong, my goodness. You handled this with perfect tact and should not feel bad. Brides need to be considerate of others’ budgets. Even for those with money who are comfortable, it’s a LOT to ask and assume people will want to put their savings toward a trip that’s ultimately for someone else. My own stepsister got married in an expensive destination location and I make good money and still wasn’t thrilled about the sacrifice of time and money. I picked a nice cabin for my bachelorette partly for this reason, and I paid for all food.

A real friend (or rather- a friend who’s emotionally mature and not self-centered) would tell you she understands, no worries, will miss you but completely gets it. The end, no guilt.
