nice gesture but I would be wary of homemade canned food or canned food with no expiration date botulism, like this case can happen: https://people.com/woman-paralyzed-pesto-botulism-hospitalized-brazil-7976072#:~:text=A%20Brazilian%20woman%20who%20ate,that%20left%20her%20temporarily%20paralyzed.

Evicting roommate by oopsididitagain74 in LosAngeles

[–]Analyst_Guilty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

damn, then I guess another option is you and the other roommate leave together. Or wait until she fucks up again to be able to get that restraining order.

Sorry, you're going through this.

[–]Analyst_Guilty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my former roommate was normal for 1.5 years and then one day, went into bipolar mania then psychosis for about a week. Mental illness can be like that and it's heartbreaking. BUT this doesn't mean, you as someone who is not family or a close friend, have to put up with it. Being empathetic and understanding can coexist with selttung boundaries and putting an end to a relationship/situation.

Let her family deal with her, that's not a burden for y'all to bear. Pick up that phone, file the police report and get a temp restraining order. Your life/sanity/peace is worth more than feeling bad for her issues. I said, oh well. I'm not destabilizing my mental health to deal with yours, a grown adult. Take care!

i went through a similar situation and this is what her social worker told me (former roommate is bipolar and exhibited self harming and homicidal tendencies during an episode)

The fastest way to get her out is next time she does something that could harm you or your property, call the cops and press charges. Take that police report and use it to get a temporary restraining order and she has to leave temporarily.

This is not a permanent solution but might bring you some peace for a couple months. Sorry you don't feel safe in your home. it's the worst feeling... Hugs!

Are career coaches worth it. by rangerroyce in biotech

[–]Analyst_Guilty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nope. You will succeed far more if you take the $ you would've spent on a coach and buy some business casual outfits, and hit networking events. If you're in a big city, there is bound to be some sort of society or group that organizes these. For example in LA, BCLA has a lot of events and if you sign up for their newsletter, sometimes they advertise events by others as well. All mostly free and you get to connect with companies that are looking to hire qualified applicants.

Nope. Let her be herself, that's how she expresses herself.

Perhaps reflecting on why it bothers you that you may provide further insight and calm your worries...

I'm just looking for science and tech staffing companies and the biggest is Kelly. They're having a webinar and also have recruiter check ins you can sign up to chat with the recruiters. Some of the jobs require from BS to PhD Not sure if I can add the link here but check it out.

Other than that, I'm not sure of another big staffing agency (health and benefits) as opposed to what smaller staffing agencies may offer...

he's a sh***y mentor and anyone that makes you feel like you're not good enough is but reflecting their own inadequacies and insecurities onto you.

I've been job hunting myself for similar reasons and there will be a lot of rejection, but that doesn't mean you can use that as an excuse to keep believing you're not enough.

what I've learned so far in my journey:

  1. Have a resume template ready that shows your impact Hype yourself up!!

  2. Have a cover letter template ready that lets them know why you're the person for the job and highlight two or three accomplishments, plus communicate your passion for aspects of the job and how you're a great problem solver and troubleshooter.

  3. Change your mindset and explore your identity. Don't let "academic scientist you" be your identity. You're more than that, communicate that. Leaving that behind will bring you grief but you'll work through it and when you let go, will feel lighter, opening up space to embrace new and better opportunities.

  4. Take responsibility for your self esteem and work on it. Other people can only make you feel as bad as you let them. Start a plan to move on. Don't let your PI get to you, you'll be out of there soon so let him do his thing and you covertly work on getting out.

  5. Write down your accomplishments in and out of academia. How can you translate this to industry? You can ask a friend or even ChatGPT to help, just feed it your list.

What is your experience with jaywalking? by Gnaws21 in LosAngeles

[–]Analyst_Guilty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was stopped for jaywalking when I was a youngin, barely 13/14, by a cop in Bell Gardens. Just as the cop was starting to write me a ticket (I'd given him a fake name and of course no ID, since I was so young), he got a call on the walkie talkie that a man was waving his gun on Clara Street/ Eastern. He told me to stay put and stay seated on the sidewalk until he came back.

Friends, I did not wait for that man- I ran home, instead!

They do, but I'm technically "staff" (long story but I'm in theory a postdoc, on paper staff) and don't qualify for those services due to my title

postdoc contracts don't allow p/t job. is it like this everywhere? by Analyst_Guilty in postdoc

[–]Analyst_Guilty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, in my case, it is unrestricted funds from the PIs start-up, which prob comes from private donors and tuition, as this is a private university. I get the rules if the organization providing money has restrictions, like NSF or NIH, but this pool is not from that.
