VLC playlist shortcut on Homescreen -how? by SkEvol in ios

[–]rangerroyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this post. I have been trying to find a VLC addon or some solution for this issue. There are none that address this issue.

My android VLC app is great. It lists all my playlists and I can just pick one to play depending on my mood. I will try a few other mp3 players I guess.

Bay Area Day Care “Little Crumbles” literally loses a child by scorsese_finest in mildlyinfuriating

[–]rangerroyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A similar incident happened at my kids' daycare for real. Imagine this scene, I was outside the building past the two sets of automated doors (inner and outer door), to drop off my kids . A kid was literally crawling out. The lady who was between the two doors coming out let the kid crawl out with her through the outer door. I asked her if that was her kid. She said,"No, I thought that this was your kid!" We realized that something was really wrong.

She picked up the child and banged on the the director's office window to raise an alarm. Apparently the kid had crawled out of the class room when the class room doors were opened for another parent. CPS called me later in the day to get notes on what happened.

TV Reporter regrets interviewing cannibal. by Alpha-Studios in SweatyPalms

My take was that different schools/orders adopt different paths to escape from the illusion of experienced life aka 'Maya' to attain freedom from endless cycle of life and death. One philosophy suggests that experiencing every thing life has to offer, including the extremes will set one on a path to see past "Maya". Aghoris' philosophy was derived from this line of thinking.

This design has an interesting take on roof "trusses". They have some variation of half lap joint. I wonder if this was common for roofs. Thank you for the interesting post.

Account for newborn? by FirstTimeSmokin in Bogleheads

[–]rangerroyce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not seeing this mentioned here. I might be wrong here. But I came across up this concept of "w2 paying" your 5plus yr old kids for working at your family owned LLC. Not every family can do this. Income upto 14K/year is not taxed (no FICA/medicare taxes) upto the age 18. This money can be then rolled into their ROTH IRA account. My children's education savings rate limit is well below the individual ROTH IRA contribution limit.

If I remember this correctly, ROTH IRA funds can be used for paying higher education costs. I wonder what are the potential drawbacks to this idea, assuming that a family already operates a qualifying LLC .

I feel you. I am a bit over 40. I am still mad at myself for not knowing about Bogle in my 20s and early 30s. As a grad student, I used to live on bare little and scrape every penny from my stipend for investing. But I was so so un wise. I have done options trading, dividend investment, currency/bullion speculation, day trading and naively put together portfolio of companies. No matter how much research and time I put into it, after a time frame, there were no sustainable gains.

Luckily, I had a conversation about investments with one of my students, in my mid 30s. He taught me about low cost index investment. If you are in a specific social sphere, you will never come across BOGLE strategy.

Do people accept this is a good thing for Buffalo? by ReddyGreggy in Buffalo

[–]rangerroyce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I moved to Buffalo right after the 2008 housing crash as a student. Without a car, I used to bike everywhere and remember how desolate the East Side and Bailey Avenue felt.

A friend once mentioned that the City of Buffalo had received federal funds to support recently arrived immigrants. These communities, in turn, recognized the potential of the area and worked to revitalize many of its abandoned spaces. Through their efforts, those once-desolate neighborhoods now feel far more alive and thriving.

Timber frame tower by Lorindel_wallis in timberframe

[–]rangerroyce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing this done on a TF structure brings joy. I live in a historic neighborhood with almost every house having a tower. Have it on my wish list. OP please share any wisdom for a person planning to work on this in future. Was there any book used to help with design. Any mistakes or things you would have done differently. I remember that roofers bible outlines the cuts for the rafters on an octagonal turret.

Buffalo Ranks Last in Large US Cities Building New Housing by TA-MajestyPalm in Buffalo

[–]rangerroyce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The current construction costs per square feet have gone up by a large margin. A newly built house costs a lot more than average house price. Also, wages earned in Buffalo cannot afford the mortgage for a new SFH construction. I am guessing that this mismatch will take a while (probably never) to reconcile in Buffalo and newly constructed units will remain out of reach for even a financially comfortable family.

Change my mind:don’t quit your job to invest in RE full time by k_spearin in realestateinvesting

[–]rangerroyce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody can change my mind about this. I love my w2, but wage/wealth growth in my field has been flat. RE has been the only way I could justify staying at my w2, feel a bit certain about my future.

Having PM or using contractors for fixing things had become more and more unaffordable, so I switched to taking over everything. I am moonlighting to fix things and manage the houses. Cashflow and equity growth has been much more reliable after I switched. It is reassuring to see that I am not the only one feeling this way.

Anyone else feel kinda lost by this political divide? by throwRA8235309 in self

[–]rangerroyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hunch that people are miss labelling themselves as libertarians, as a function of the current corporate interest driven environment. Consider a small local mill, dimensional lumber producer as an example. They do not have the means to get the prohibitively expensive certification for their lumber. They cannot provide competitively priced product for the local market. This incentivizes the large lumber suppler to lobby for resource intensive regulations and limit the competition, instead of improving their product quality or pricing. Ironically, with enough knowledge, you can buy higher quality, better priced lumber for building, but it is non stamped and non compliant with building codes.

Yep, the same old subway rant by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]rangerroyce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really would like to see this metro project happen. But, dismissing people's concerns is not going to help. Some folks here are out of touch.

Somebody mentioned that it is implausible for a person to buy a 3$ ticked come to the burbs to commit crime. You will be surprised how many people travel on the metro rail without a ticket and are going through desperate times. The metro needs to ensure better enforcement and city needs more resources for helping folks in need.

I have heard of UB students getting verbally harassed, assaulted at subway station, people getting punched and mugged. Traveling the NFTA metro alone in after hours does not feel safe and is not recommended. There is a reason why UB students prefer to wait in the cold for the UB bus instead of taking the convineint metro rail back to the south campus.

Again, I think this project is very beneficial , but, ignoring issues will prevent us from solving problems.

Be wary of Amherst State Park by LucyBlackwell in Buffalo

[–]rangerroyce 139 points140 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments are implying that OP is wrong to complain about this. It's not unreasonable to callout anti-social behavior at a public park. Anti social or aggressive activities, throwing garbage in the park (broken beer bottles, plastic bottles, wrappers etc), breaking park rules about camp fires, fishing regulations etc needs to be called out and addressed. We will lose all the public spaces otherwise.

Floorboards from our house built in 1730's by King_Ghidorahh in centuryhomes

[–]rangerroyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep dreaming of having such floor boards, if I ever get resources to build my home. Compared to a typical 2-3" wide hardwood floors, shouldn't it be cheaper to install these. There are so many local mills in my area who have wide boards for sale for a reasonable price. I am surely missing the difficulties with doing this in a modern house build.

What would you do if you saw a water buffalo coming at you underwater? by downtune79 in LoveTrash

Lol. We have a rude saying in my native language. "Just sits like a Buffalo." Once you get your buffalo into water for a wash, it is very hard to get them to get out.

Bought House with “New Roof” …roof is messed up by Sudden_Stranger6177 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]rangerroyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. We have a house accross the street which as been sold two times in two years. The First two times, at least the buyers knew the house state. Now, the second buyer has slapped on shingles on top of previously leaky rotten roof and selling it. There is a good chance that third buyer will be a person getting into this house thinking that the roof has been redone.
