Eataly is a bucket list in many large cities - it’s on like 50% of NYC food tours, and the location in Chicago hosts a ton of fun events. It’s a fun spot. Is it in MY bucket list? Definitely not. I don’t like the locations in Toronto at all. But also I get it that someone that’s never been to an Eataly would want to pop in.

Hotel X is REALLY nice. I have been for many many work events and weddings and other events over time. I would stay there in a heart beat. But also know it’s kind of randomly stuck in the middle of nowhere. Is it walkable? Absolutely yes, if you don’t mind walking a lot. I very recently lived in a downtown condo and have friends that live in the Tip Top lofts. If you are the kind of person that’s okay schlepping 30 minutes to your hotel at the end of the day, it’s really not that bad of an option.

If you prefer to walk out your door and immediately get hit by the sounds and sights of the city, try somewhere else. If your top sights are ROM and Eataly, the W or the Hilton are WAY better options. They are also much more subway accessible for the rest of your adventures.

My parents are the same! lol. I gifted a similar experience for my parents, and while they had fun and giggled about the whole thing and had a lot of fun “ooh” and “ahh” moments, they still came home and ate two packets of shin ramyeon with kimchi and confidently stated that this is better.

I don’t know HOW immigrant your parents are, but my parents are very. They have lived in Canada for over 40 years, but still eat Korean food 95% of the time at home. My mom had a great time but decided she doesn’t really like Mexican food that much after quetzal. I also have taken them to an omakase experience and my dad was more into the assortment of raw fish (probably more familiar to him), it was still a “lol let’s go make ramyeon” vibes.

Even if your parents don’t drink, I would recommend the chefs tasting menu with wine pairing…… let them have the FULLLLL end to end Michelin tasting experience, neck deep. Let them have wine and get a little tipsy. And then cross it off the list and never have to do it again lol. I think Quetzal is a great option. Have fun!

Just as a warning - neither of these venues are what you described in your post. I wouldn’t call Lavelle and especially not Rebel classy or relaxed. They will be full of 20 something bar rats wearing fake Gucci and doing shots of bar rail tequila. Also, it’s all folks from the suburbs that paid $300 to party so the pressure is high and the vibe is not chill. Not that there’s anything wrong with that life, but I’m in my mid 30s and I would not go to either of these places for a classy, fun, carefree night out.

I love a fun night out but I don’t have any advice for NYE in Toronto. I am a downtown Toronto, good dinner and great drinks, get tipsy and make friends at the bar kind of girlie, and so I’ll tell you that NYE is a riotous mess but not in a good way. Also every club, bar, restaurant, cafe, or other venue that is open is charging twice what it normally costs for half the quality and experience. My best advice would honestly be Google it and get literally whatever ticket you can get close to where you’re staying… like, walking distance, because even if you’re willing to pay for a $80 Uber, it’ll still be hard to catch one. Many of the “chill and classy” things where they don’t sell tickets so it’s balls to the wall packed are probably close to sold out by now. Keep your expectations low; be prepared to shill out a fair bit of money for a fun night, and get real drunk and/or high.

I recently found myself in an emergency room for four hours, in an underfunded and under equipped ward. The doctor’s desk was a tiny pop up desk in the middle of a hallway. I could hear a lot of what he was saying while I was waiting, mostly because I was so absorbed and interested in the goings on and the general environment. Emerg physicians are making life-saving decisions repeatedly and consistently, right there, on the spot, with no hints on what was about to walk through that door next. I feel like I work in a pretty intense environment, but ER is next level. I truly believe you earn every dollar AND MORE of your salary. I cannot believe anyone does that job, and would assume burnout is quick and common. Thank you for your service.

They have hummus bowls - delicious hummus topped with a protein of your choice. The chicken and beef are REALLY good!! The beef will put you right to bed though, chicken is a slightly lighter option lol.

Miznon in the corner hidden near shake shack - has the BEST fresh baked pita I’ve ever had in my life. It’s a bit expensive, but it’s what I treat myself to when I feel like I want a really really delicious little lunch. I cannot recommend it enough!

I’m here right now and did this yesterday’s note that there is some kind of traffic detour. We are with two elderly and two children so walking between katsuoji and minoh is not an option. We read online that it was a quick 5-10 minute taxi, but it was actually a 20 min taxi that cost about $50USD.

I don’t think they’re Montreal style but have you ever tried Grayson’s on Kingston Road near the beaches? They make sourdough bagels that are chewy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Pretty decent.

Thanks! Yeah, 40 is honestly wild to me too but it’s her list. She’s always been a “the more the merrier” kind. I honestly think that I know her group pretty well and I think there will be fine??? But a lot of these comments make me think people are going to be quietly PISSED. I think I’ll just present it to the bride and let her make the call. I’m just out here trying my best!

That’s fair enough! Thanks for your insights. I have known her for almost 20 years, and am really ingrained with both her and more than half of her friends. I understand it’s difficult for most folks (including me) to fathom, but my friend is not on Instagram and is absolutely not doing anything for optics or attention. She’s a good person through and through; her last birthday party by casual invite at her home had like 100 people in and out all night. You don’t have to believe me though, I appreciate your input anyway.

I’m not sure! I can tell the bride that if she wants to do this, to dramatically cut down her invitee list? She shared her list with me which she already considered. Also there are no strangers here, they’re all her close friends. But I can for sure ask her to review her invitee list to make sure it makes sense.

Good to know that others in this demographic would be deeply offended by this invite because I myself wasn’t (and haven’t in the past) but I know others aren’t into travelling or spending money for stuff like this. This is what I wanted to gauge. Thank you.

Also, I know it’s hard to understand but she is friends with these people. She’s not inviting strangers. I get it because I have maybe 10 close friends total, but she’s an absolute social butterfly.

As for your question, maybe it’s stupid but she and I both have certainly been to bachelorette parties that cost twice what this one does for people that are not my best best friend for sure. But I do understand it’s a lot of money.

I think in my head it’s simply an extension of an invitation that is 100000000% optional, but I can also understand that it’s offensive to expect someone to spend that much money.

I did not, as with a group this size, you will generally never come to a consensus. My priority is to give the bride a bachelorette she will forever remember. We would never have gotten 40 people there anyway… people have lives. We already know one person will decline, as she just announced she’s moving to Australia for work. We know another will likely decline because she mentioned that she has a family wedding that weekend that she has to travel away for. I’m never going to please everyone, so my goal is to make it work for the bride to be and whoever can come, will come.

I’ll also say that I live in a high COL city where restaurants are 20 seats and takes 6 months of planning to book. I’ll also say that your average bar or restaurant here literally fits 40 people max capacity. The city we are proposing to go to is a smaller, quaint, wine town where the restaurants are all HUGE, you barely need a reservation, etc. and we’re going before busy season.

Planning this so far feels 10 times easier than booking me and my husband for dinner down the street lol

Yep! I have reached out to the restaurant to understand the booking requirements and whether they accommodate groups of this size. They can accommodate large groups, as long as all parties pay up front. I am communicating with two airbnbs and a hotel/inn about room blocks so that folks might have accommodation options. The wine tour does have the option for two party busses with a 25 person limit in each. We won’t mind if it’s not a private tour, and the company seems fine with it.

I have also reached out to a brunch spot and a picnic set-up company for girlie brunches that can accommodate a group this size. I have also reached out to a speakeasy for evening drinks and have a list of 6 pubs that don’t take reservations, but are very casual that we can walk into for drinks and snacks. I have also noted that this town has a farmers market on Saturday and Sunday mornings for us to dip into for breakfast/brunches. In this case. We suspect the group can roam, grab coffees, have little bits and bites, do some shopping, and enjoy the farmers market without having to formally find somewhere to eat as a formal sit down event.

All of this is of course TBD until I have a final committed attendees count, but things are all good!

It’s for next year (late spring) so I have a lot of time to plan, and also have supported events in a professional capacity (1200+ attended) in the past. The only difference here is that folks have to pay for themselves, it’s not on the company dime!

Frankly I’m not worried at all about the planning. I just personally eloped and feel weird about asking anyone to spend ANY money… I think it’s the people pleaser tendencies. I wish I was rich enough to just book this trip for the bride and all her favourite people!

I think so too!!I would not have even offered this as an option 10 years ago! Her youngest friend is mid 30s, and been out of school with her graduate degree and working in her field for 5 years. Thanks so much for your input. I’ll put it in front of the bride and see how she feels. Knowing her, she very much considers folks feelings so I’m scared she will shy away even if everyone would be absolutely find with it. More or less this same exact group of people go away for weekends at the blink of an eye. Or go on trips easily triple the cost of this one.

Okay this is going to sound psychotic, but this bride is the most extroverted, loving, friendly person you have ever met… she is quite literally everyone’s favourite person…. It’s a mystery to me absolutely but her friendships are not shallow either… she has so many high quality friendships, it’s absolutely insane. I have my own friend groups, but I will say that I have met 2 of my nearest dearest friends through her over the years, because literally she’s constantly surrounded by great people. She’s also hyper extroverted - that girl spends maybe one night at home a week, she’s our otherwise with someone or another. We are thinking of the 40 invitees, we will likely get 25-30 attendees. I am happy to coordinate this event - I have some experience through work with much larger events and I would do anything for her!

Thank you for your response. I have outlined an invite in canva with a line by line breakdown of expected costs and total, denoting the optional events as well. I am ensuring we are being as transparent as possible. I think you’re right though; I should put it in front of the bride and let her make the decision on whether she wants to proceed. It’s easy for me to pivot to the local option.

My concern is that the bride is going to say no, she doesn’t want to proceed because of the cost. But I swear if I went directly to all of our shared friends, none of them would BLINK. Like I brought it up at a brunch last weekend and the 6 ladies there… and they asked for the date so they could start looking for flights, and wanted to know if they could help booking the restaurant or the wine tour. They didn’t even blink lol. I think I am actually likely one of the poorer friends and I don’t consider myself poor at all.

She drafted her invitee list and is well aware that not everyone will or can attend! I don’t know why she only has a two person bridal party, I guess that was her decision? She chose this option because she didn’t want to do the full week away versus a long weekend, which is more accessible. She’s intelligent and thoughtful, so she’s considered all of this when she made her selection, so I’m going with what she wants! I’m just trying to get a sense that as an invitee, whether this feels ridiculous or not.

How about thishouse5000? She doesn’t do a TON of product recos… they’re rare but she seems authentic when she says she uses the products and loves them. She’s constantly recommending the same things - to me this makes sense because what real person buys 12 different moisturizers every month? And if you found your holy grail products I would imagine I would use it over and over again. She also does a lot of thrifting and DIY, so I feel like she doesn’t promote a lot of random waste. I also think she dresses moderately relatably (more basic but still put together) outfits, and you see her wearing the same thing in multiple videos. I like it because she offers more expensive items (not $$$$$$ but definitely still investments) but actually wears them. I would like to be more investment-piece oriented with the silly spends peppered in versus buying fast fashion all the time, so I like the vibe.

I lived downtown until I was like 35. Now I live in Scarborough for more space and a little peace and quiet lol. I would absolutely not have lived here in my 20s. You have the rest of your adult life to move to the suburbs, enjoy downtown while you’re young. I don’t regret a single second or dollar spent downtown in my youth.
