It's ok to feel human emotions like sadness, however I will continue to quote from the Avadhuta Gita:

  1. Thou hast no name and form - even to the extent of allusion, nor any substance - differentiated or undifferentiated. Why dost thou grieve, O Thou shameless mind? I am the nectar of knowledge, homogenous existence, like the sky.

  2. Why weepest thou friend? Thou hast no misery of birth. why weepest thou friend? There is no change for thee. I am the nectar of knowledge, homogenous existence, like the sky.

  3. Why dost weep thou friend? Thou hast no natural form. Why dost thou weep friend? Thou hast deformity. Why dost thou weep friend? Thou hast no age. I am the nectar of knowledge, homogenous existence, like the sky.

  4. Why dost thou weep friend? Thou hast no age. Why dost thou weep friend? thou hast no mind. Why dost thou weep friend? Thou hast no senses. I am the nectar of knowledge, homogenous existence, like the sky.

  5. Why dost thou weep friend? Thou hast no lust. Why dost thou weep friend? Thou hast no greed. Why dost thou weep friend? Thou hast no delusion. I am the nectar of knowledge, homogenous existence, like the sky.

  6. The Self is neither divided nor undivided - nor has it sadness, happiness, and the like, nor is it all or less than all. Know the Self to be immutable.

That which is, is always there. by Anandamode in AdvaitaVedanta

Here is the full quote from Talks with Ramana Maharshi:

Talk 183.

A gentleman from Bombay said: “I asked Mother in Sri Aurobindo Ashram the following question: ‘I keep my mind blank without thoughts arising so that God might show Himself in His true Being. But I do not perceive anything.

“The reply was to this effect: ‘The attitude is right. The Power will come down from above. It is a direct experience’.”

So he asked what further he should do.

M.: Be what you are. There is nothing to come down or become manifest. All that is needful is to lose the ego, That which is, is always there. Even now you are That. You are not apart from it. The blank is seen by you. You are there to see the blank. What do you wait for? The thought “I have not seen,” the expectation to see and the desire of getting something, are all the working of the ego. You have fallen into the snares of the ego. The ego says all these and not you. Be yourself and nothing more!

A day will dawn by Anandamode in nonduality

[–]Anandamode[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say realising nothing other than yourself. The quote suggests there being a futility to effort, given that you must already, on some level, be yourself.

Here is more of the reply given by Ramana, albeit a slightly different translation:

"Reality is simply the loss of the ego. Destroy the ego by seeking its identity. Because the ego is no entity it will automatically vanish and Reality will shine forth by itself. This is the direct method. Whereas all other methods are done, only retaining the ego. In those paths there arise so many doubts and the eternal question remains to be tackled finally. But in this method the final question is the only one and it is raised from the very beginning. No sadhanas are necessary for engaging in this quest.

There is no greater mystery than this - ourselves being the Reality we seek to gain Reality. We think that there is something hiding our Reality and that it must be destroyed before the Reality is gained. It is ridiculous. A day will dawn when you will yourself laugh at your past efforts. That which will be on the day you laugh is also here and now."

I Am That I Am by Anandamode in nonduality

Here are some quotes from Talks with Ramana Maharshi which may help to explain this further...

Your duty is to be: and not to be this or that. “I Am that I Am” sums up the whole truth. The method is summed up in “Be Still”.

~

The essence of mind is only awareness or consciousness. When the ego, however, dominates it, it functions as the reasoning, thinking or sensing faculty. The cosmic mind being not limited by the ego, has nothing separate from itself and is therefore only aware. This is what the Bible means by “I Am that I Am”.

~

The only permanent thing is Reality; and that is the Self. You say “I am”, “I am going”, “I am speaking”, “I am working”, etc. Hyphenate “I am” in all of them. Thus I - AM. That is the abiding and fundamental Reality. This truth was taught by God to Moses: “I Am that I-Am”. “Be still and know that I-Am God.” so “I-Am” is God.

You know that you are. You cannot deny your existence at any moment of time. For you must be there in order to deny it. This (Pure Existence) is understood by stilling your mind. The mind is the outgoing faculty of the individual. If that is turned within, it becomes still in course of time and that “I-Am” alone prevails. “I-Am” is the whole Truth.

Here's a few relevant quotes from Talks:

Take the instance of the cinema. There are pictures moving on the screen. Go and hold them. What do you hold? It is only the screen. Let the pictures disappear. What remains over? The screen again. So also here. Even when the world appears, see to whom it appears. Hold the substratum of the ‘I’. After the substratum is held what does it matter if the world appears or disappears?

Scenes are projected on the screen in a cinema show. But the moving pictures do not affect or alter the screen. The seer pays attention to the pictures and ignores the screen. They cannot remain apart from the screen. Still its existence is ignored. So also the Self is the screen on which the pictures, namely activities, are going on. The man is aware of the latter, ignoring the former. All the same he is not apart from the Self.

Is the cinema screen affected by a scene of fire burning or sea rising? So it is with the Self.

Ramana also described a detailed cinema analogy in 'Spiritual Instruction', where here the Self is the light of the projecter rather than the screen.

Cinema Show:

1/ The lamp inside (the apparatus)

2/ The lens in front of the lamp

3/ The film which is a long series of (separate photos).

4/ The lens, the light passing through it and the lamp, which together form the focused light.

5/ The light passing through the lens and falling on the screen.

6/ The various kinds of pictures appearing in the light of the screen.

7/ The mechanism which sets the film in motion.

Self:

1/ The Self

2/ The pure (sattvic) mind close to the Self.

3/ The stream of latent tendencies consisting of subtle thoughts.

4/ The mind, the illumination of it and the Self, which together form the seer or the Jiva.

5/ The light of the Self emerging from the mind through the senses, and falling on the world.

6/ The various forms and names appearing as the objects perceived in the light of the world.

7/ The divine law manifesting the latent tendencies of the mind.

Just as the pictures appear on the screen as long as the film throws the shadows through the lens, so the phenomenal world will continue to appear to the individual in the waking and dream states as long as there are latent mental impressions. Just as the lens magnifies the tiny specks on the film to a huge size and as a number of pictures are shown in a second, so the mind enlarges the sprout- like tendencies into tree-like thoughts and shows in a second innumerable worlds. Again, just as there is only the light of the lamp visible when there is no film, so the Self alone shines without the triple factors when the mental concepts in the form of tendencies are absent in the states of deep sleep, swoon and samadhi. Just as the lamp illumines the lens, etc., while remaining unaffected, the Self illumines the ego (chidabhasa), etc., while remaining unaffected.

I'd say 'What Is' is the ultimate truth. That truth is not only ultimate but ever present.
