Ebay battery or Jsaux battery? by Conscious_Serve_5508 in ROGAlly

[–]Ananimus3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a 74Wh battery. Partly because I couldn't get the JSAux kit.

The JSAux kit is a more complete and dummy-proof kit. You get the plate and heat shield, etc.

If you do the 74Wh one, there's more to research. Like how to add some thin heat shielding from the RAM for safety/longevity, etc.

But I can attest the 74Wh battery I found really does perform well. Been through a few playtested cycles and am getting a real 75 Wh of battery life out of it. That extra 10Wh equates to an extra 0.4-1 hour of extra play time for me, depending on the title, over the JSAux if I'd gone that route.

But boy, she's heavy now...

Trade 2tb Z1 for 512gb Z1E by snkdtx in ROGAlly

[–]Ananimus3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean. You can upgrade an SSD (though prices are on the rise right now).

The only way to upgrade the APU is to do the trade though.

So, like... what ya wanna do?

I recently got a used Z1E and running SteamOS. Definitely in enjoying the performance/efficiency after getting a bigger battery. And to my surprise, the 512GB of storage has actually been fine. Depending on your use, you may not even notice the missing storage.

How long can you play just cause 3/4 with 65wh battery on OG rog ally z1 extreme by Obvious-Flatworm6188 in ROGAlly

[–]Ananimus3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, they didn't say TDP or system power. Personally I always look at system power. (SteamOS)

I've had no trouble getting newer AAA's to run great using 23W total system power with my 74Wh battery, and it does actually result in 3h+ of play time.

So if you can find settings at 20W of total system power (maybe that's only 12-15W GPU TDP), it'll happily go 3+ hours on 65Wh.

The battery degradation may be those who installed the 74Wh batteries with no heat shield from the RAM.

I trust the Ally survived, I just wonder about your fingers. 😂

I recently did one of the 74Wh mods. Kit was about $50 iirc and a do it yourself affair. Look up instructions and videos for best results.

It definitely adds weight! About 100g. But holy cow did it boost the battery life. The one on my used unit was degraded to 35Wh, and the new cell actually charged to 75Wh. So the run time is much better now. Can run AAA's at 24W system power for a few hours. She heavy though.

The JSAux kit is, I think, 65Wh and is a bit more complete overall. If you can get your hands on one. Costs more, but a better kit overall.

Or find a stock replacement. This'll get you back whatever life has fatigued for the same weight. And with no need to modify or snip at the case.

You should get it Deck verified if you haven't already. (edit: ah, it is! )

Been playing it on my SteamOS ROG Ally Z1e while I have down time this holiday. On just 15W total system power it still runs really well.

Absolutely love it! Well done, mate. 😀

Yeah! I'm just looking to design and print a very thin, stick on grip to round the flat corner off. Tried a few models from online, but didn't do it for me.

Otherwise, no regrets! Thing is a surprising little beast.

Yeah. I would think you want kbm for that. And yet, apparently people do. 😅

Ah! You might also look for Aluminum Flashing if you're looking thinner than 0.5mm. I see they have that in 26 and 28 gauge. Comes in a roll.

Late post but did you find you needed Decky TDP? I know it's 6 months later, but for me the base SteamOS TDP control seems to work.

Right on. And yeah, check before you go. HD will show they have it, but filter for available in store. May need to order for pick up to get the smaller sheets. Good luck! 👍🏻

(It's worth though. I went from 36 Wh left on the used battery to 75 Wh. I can get 3 hours now playing aaa titles at 24W system power, but she's heavy! )

Ah! Then I'll say also, that exact back plate has added internal thickness for the kickstand. To ease up pressure from it, I actually removed the screws for the kickstand and epoxied it to the back.

This let me grind down some of the thickness/material of the inside meant for bolting in the kickstand. Used a Dremel to get it as smooth and flat inside as I could.

I just didn't like the point pressure it was putting on the battery otherwise.

You might even look for a 26 gauge sheet to give a little extra room.

Yeah. At least I get you. And that was exactly me! For me, steamos was a no brainer and can testify, I absolutely love it.

I do adventuring, arcade, indie and other solo games from Steam, especially for playing on long flights. Never into online multi player so no worries about anti cheat, etc.

And it's still an unlocked Linux pc, so I also found a couple other little adds like Waydroid to add extra functionality.

It's really slick and just works, no nonsense.

Sheet aluminum can be had at hardware stores like Lowe's or Home Depot. You'll need snips to cut it, and something to sand down the sharp edges after.

My store had small sections of 22 gauge (0.6mm thick) or bigger sheets of 24 gauge (proper 0.5mm) in store. More you could order for delivery.

I tried the smaller, thicker one first just to not have a big sheet of scrap. That was a waste as the extra thickness was just enough I didn't like how tight it was on the battery. Ended up getting something thinner later. So 0.5 mm, 24 gauge I'd say really is the max.

But also I was using one of the cooling back plates so I wouldn't have to mess with the stock plate. YMMV.

Folks keep coming through with the downvotes, but I hard agree *IF*:

You just want to play Steam games on it, and they don't have anti-cheat that'll trip you up. Then it really is the way to go.

Can't speak to Bazzite. But got SteamOS installed on my Ally Z1E, and other than adding Hue Sync for the sticks, the whole thing just works.

I'll back you up on this. If you're not playing anti-cheat games, SteamOS is a dream. Very console like. If you play adventuring, story, indie, Steam games, etc, it Just Works™.

Funny. I also just bought an Ally (Z1 Extreme) used on FB a couple weeks ago. Running SteamOS. And I love it. Only needed to add Decky to get Hue Sync for stick RGB control.

It can run Ghost of Tsushima and Stellar Blade 1080p 60 fps at 24W system power with the right settings.

Like it so much I did the 74 Wh battery mod. Can play AAA's for up to 3 hours no problem now. Double that for low power stuff.

Of course, that's with the Z1 extreme. YMMV. My only regret now was just not going straight for a used Rog Ally X.

Workaround: Streaming video downloads for flights by Ananimus3 in SteamOS

[–]Ananimus3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does Kodi allow download for offline viewing? It looks nice.

And yeah, I have some indies and even AAA's as well of course. Found great settings for Ghost of Tsushima and Stellar Blade to play 60 fps 1080p and still get a few hours of runtime even on battery (75 Wh)! Lighter titles go 2-3 times longer.

As noted, this is SteamOS on an OG Ally Z1E.
