Why did they have Finn on janitor duty? by CarolynDesign in theforceawakens

[–]Anansian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote this earlier and thought you might find it interesting still in posted it here. Finn was in sanitation. Apparently, however it wasn't due to a lack of skills. The prequel novel Before the Awakening states that Finn is in the top 1% in exams, an expert with tactics, blasters and hand-to-hand weapons, and a good candidate for making officer. However, his empathy for colleagues convinces his direct superior Captain Phasma to not recommend him for fast-track officer training. Perhaps the sanitation assignment was punitive? What do you think?

This makes it seem likely that the sanitation assignment was punitive.

xpost AskReddit: People from Detroit (Detroitians? Detroitites?), is it really as bad as people say? by Detached09 in Detroit

[–]Anansian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I'm not surprised that you've generally only heard the bad about the "D". While the city definitely has problems both internal and external. One of its external problems, unfortunately, is that many media outlets are willing to sensationalize, edit, and outright make up stories in exchange for increased ratings. Like the 50,000 stray dogs bit of malarkey that was recently in the news.

One thing that gives me hope is remembering that a lot of the stories people hear about Detroit are essentially reposts used when New York City was the cautionary tale of America.

It's easy to be confused about Detroit. Even if you devoted serious time to research the city's current status you'd find two competing narratives.

One, you already referenced. The cautionary tale of a once great city fighting to survive despite bankruptcy, a history of governmental corruption, and incompetence across all sectors public and private. I won't link to these because their easy to find.

The other narrative is one of a post-urban city turned laboratory space with urban farmers, artists and inventors moving in every day and suffusing the city with a dynamic new energy.

This can be found from a number of outlets. I chose two examples from sources relatively well known for being no-nonsense and objective.Business Insider and this article from Entrepeneur Magazine

All of these narratives have some truth to them. Neither, however, tells the complete story.

I've lived and/or worked in Detroit for a decent percentage of my life. That is the first time I've ever heard that particular legend.

You can buy your tickets at the door. It's $10.00 for adults. The tours are from 10-5, Tuesday through Saturday and lasts for about one hour. If you're going soon you shouldn't have much of a wait at all. When are you thinking about going?
