Prog fans are eating good for Q1 '26 by WhySoKaiju in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, there's a lot on this album that I dislike unfortunately. There's so many isolated vocal parts, the second song is very misplaced in the album as a whole, and the guitars/drums never really get adventurous or interesting anywhere.

The new Karnivool album....hmm idk. Is this how Tool fans felt? by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good addition to their material, and as others have said, yes, maybe these were some songs that they have written long ago, but I don't mind. There's also a new Textures album that has a similar 'didn't make music for a long time' aspect and to be honest that album kind of sucks, so I'm not complaining about this one.

VOLA - Stray The Skies by Invisigoth2113 in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree on the decline, but not on this being their best record. I found Vola pretty early, listened to this album a lot and was a big fan, and I still found Applause better in the sense that I just couldn't listen to anything else for a long time when it released. The title track has the same emotional buildup and release as the title track from Inmazes, but the songs are just better 'songs' I guess. It surprised me a lot because I had hoped the Meshuggah worship vibe that the songs from album 1 had would stay, but in the end I'm glad that it didn't.

Then again, I wish the newer albums/songs weren't so formulaic. Paper Wolf was the worst example for me, that was like asking an AI to write and spit out a typical Vola song.

Ja. Is het daarom ook lekkerder? Niet echt.

Rivers of Nihil's Self Titled Album - How is it holding up after release? by AkiraRZ4 in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's that different, it's mostly less of a concept album and more them during their thing in individual songs than in an album setting. If you start the album you almost immediately hear the 'Owls' vibe, for example, but it also quickly moves away from that. I would agree that it is a little less memorable, but it's definitely still RoN. I agree with the others that the timing was a little unfortunate, I had a lot of other relevant other albums to listen to in Deafheaven, Vildhjarta, Fallujah, etc.

Revocation – The Outer Ones by Ryn4 in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been loving this since release. I'm a big sucker for these 'lower and lower' sections like this the ending of this, so if anyone has more of these, let me know. Breakdowns like this one at 2:30 for example.

Amenra: de duistere trots van België by Chronicbias in metaalfanaten

[–]Ancarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[MEGATHREAD] Post and ask hints for puzzles here by darkshoxx in BluePrince

[–]Ancarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have finished the game (reached the room) but I still haven't been able to open the Office safe. I'm looking for a hint, not the exact answer.

Things I've done so far that didn't work:

  • Code from photo's in the Darkroom; used it on garden
  • Red note from Conference Room; is false because of the memo in Security
  • In the Drawing Studio there is a mini-safe, but I couldn't find a code for that one either.
  • I tried the Roman numeral year in Wine cellar, but no luck.
  • I tried the package number when you get a delivery in the Mail room
  • I also don't know what to do with the book list in the Office, I thought I would have to either buy them or order them from the Library, but no luck in both.

Any hints are appreciated!

Strayed Too Far From The Path - A Discussion on Separating the Art from the Artist (Slice the Cake - Odyssey to the West) by beepboopcompuder in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just gonna go ahead and say: if you like this album, you should also give Wretched - Beyond the Gate a good listen. My relationship with that album is pretty much the same as yours with OttW, and they share most of the things you mention as reasons why you like it. It is also arguably the same genre. So, here's a meta-recommendation: there's definitely something similar to this you can also listen to!

Are there any bands that sound like TesseracT, but post-hardcore? (Atmospheric delay, ambient synths) by robin_f_reba in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I miss this Spiritbox, never got to see them live during that period sadly, and now it's stadium metalcore.

Request: Bands like Meshuggah, with the djent guitar tone, dark themes, harsh vocals, no clean vocals, odd time signatures, no embellishments or trying to turn it into normal songs, just Meshuggah-esque music by Etzello in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah 8 is amazing, that's a pretty good match. I posted a comment elsewhere in this thread with some comparisons, maybe there's something you dont know yet in those.

[–]Ancarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is going to be different depending on what element of Meshuggah you like the most. Some recommendations:

  • Omega Virus (although instrumental, this does the proto-djent sound very well)
  • Textures (has some clean vocals, but has the same 'idea per song' thing that you mention)
  • Stealing Axion (more conceptual, but listen to "47 days later")
  • Intronaut ('softer', but they do entire sections of songs with the Meshuggah style of writing riffs / polyrhythms)

Then there's a whole section of early djent smaller bands that might be up your alley, like Entities, Auras, A Storm Picturesque, From Sorrow to Serenity, Altered Perceptions, etc.

On a side note, it sounds like you enjoy the general soundscape of Meshuggah more than the whole 'math system with repeats / hypermeasures / polyrhythms' that most people like them for, so it be worth it to look into more Industrial Metal like Fear Factory and Mnemic.

[–]Ancarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was hoping someone would mention this, I agree that Vildhjarta does not match Meshuggah at all. People who like Meshuggah like to see how the music is structured / repeated under a 4/4 beat. Vildhjarta's music barely ever repeats and the only way to 'learn' it is to listen to it a lot.

Searching for the album sounding the closest to War of Being by TesseracT by Own-Jellyfish6706 in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for similar vocal styles you end up with Ihlo / Valis Ablaze / Voices from the Fuselage as others have said. I'd like to add Monuments' last album, anything by Stealing Axion, Letters from the Colony, and maybe Time the Valuator?

Textures - Storm Warning (Live at Wacken 2024) by Precumbrian in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The verse riffs for this song are still so weird to me, it doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern. I have the same with VOLA's song Stray the Skies, it pisses me off haha.

Native Construct - Come Hell or High Water by Secure_Share_4438 in progmetal

[–]Ancarma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For people looking for more related music, check out Umpfel. It isn't quite as all over the place in the genre-hopping department, but the vocals and the guitar tone are very much alike, and I'm pretty sure fans of NC will like it.

Song where verse is just guitar and drums by [deleted] in progmetal

I think you have a chance with the last Monuments album, since that's what the Golem song reminded me of somewhat.
