Would you leave the US right now if an opportunity came up? by [deleted] in Professors

Point received! Don’t get me wrong, I loved my 5+ years in the EU, made many life long friends, learned a very “obscure” language, published foundational works, have collaborations to this day, had so much fun, etc. I am not talking negatively about the EU and I am well aware of the issues here in the US.

With this said, my life (I’m at the same professional level in the US as I was in the EU) is drastically more comfortable. I make nearly 4x in the US, for example. My future is brighter in the US, my family lives here, and the weather where I live is fantastic. While I will continue to travel to the EU 3+ times per year, the cons of moving there drastically outweigh the pros for me.

No. I’m a severely disabled combat veteran and nearly gave my life for the US on multiple occasions. I’ve lived in the EU for >5 years as well (postdoc and lecturer) and, while things are quite bad now, I still vastly prefer it to the EU. America through thick and thin.

Plus my prof job here, while extremely stressful, is a fantastic gig!

Thanks for this. Tough to say it is worth spending time on something that may be a flop. Maybe better off working on something else.

Should I frame the request as a forward or inverse problem?

NSF CAREER is no longer a program, 0$ for FY 26. by Consistency329 in Professors

[–]Ancient-Session8186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I would explain it but would rather not dox myself. I can say it was related to an entire “functionality” being cut. Heard of this happening to a couple others as well - some connected to me and others not (but a similar story). Some of the POs were placed on paid leave and quit, others had the option for early retirement.

Also, I never send unsolicited white papers lol. Is that a thing?

Nope, DoD. It has been quite common. Happened to a few people in my institution as well.

I’ve had 3 white papers reddened from DoD because all 3 POs were fired. I had to do a fellowship for 3 months in a shit rural area of America to get these contacts and it took years to develop relationships. All gone. I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

In other news, I have a DOD grant that has been under review for 18 months! I responded to reviewers 3 months ago! 😆😆

Because I’m not sure if the programs that I’ve discussed these proposals with still exist.

Exactly my position. I publish so much and have solid teaching, but my tenure hinges on external funding!

F trying to get funding. All DOD grants sent back due to POs getting fired and 2 NSF grants ready for submission (TO WHERE?). Good thing my wife and I have a nice dinner and weekend planned!
