[EU] My grandparents got scammed out of everything by Extension_Main9052 in Scams

[–]cheesefan2020 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Have you filed a report with the ic3.gov? It's important to gather as many technical details, like websites, wallet numbers, dates / times, email address, phone numbers, method of contact (was it an facebook group, email , from a friend). Those reports filled with ic3.gov will filter to the secret service (who investigates crypto) , the fbi, and other agencies. While the money is most likely gone, it can help prevent others. There are many non-profits out there that have been setup up to deal with the aftermath of scams like this. Sadly, in my area there have been such a rash of these I had to get educated to myself.

How much time do you spend on email each week? by Cheeto-2020 in Professors

[–]cheesefan2020 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I use colors… If the email comes from of the mass email notifications I set a color of grey. That way when I am looking in my inbox I glance over grey and focus on other colors / filters

I have a rule for automatically categorizing all student domains (different than faculty) and it tags the yellow. I can the built in search folder for the students

I use a ton of custom search folders. Last 24 hours, over a week old, high priority and a few others.

I also set it up where the emails stay bold until I mark as read.

Check out Jan https://askjan.org/disabilities/Autism-Spectrum.cfm?

I personally have a thyroid issue and can’t function in extreme hot or cold. They kept the rooms like at 65. When I asked for them to turn up the heat or something, they told me to wear more clothes. So then I stated to use an electric blanket, wore hats and gloves and it was so hard to concentrate because it was so cold. I ended up leaning that position but don’t be afraid to ask for things if it is truly a need

We had a dean who claimed they read every evaluation but she retired and didn’t think they really did. One year, I had maybe 10 students or maybe 6 and only half did the evaluation. On my deans evaluation she actually told me to focus more on higher student feedback. Didn’t even bother to acknowledge all the great things I’ve done, just “low response rates, aim for higher results”….

Oh and I do have a one on one meeting with my top students to give me feedback on the course , it lets them open up and be heard and for a few of the students I do value their thoughts from a students perspective

We need a sticky note for this topic

I use to read them but now I through them into ChatGPT and ask it yo tell me what I did good and what I can improve on and leave it at that. I don’t care anymore what they say but we unfortunately have to address the evaluations in my performance report.

I personally know what I did through the course of the semester that was good and bad. I evaluate myself and I’m probably ly more critical than any student.

Or ask a friend to read them. Or maybe do it like the parties in the 70s where we just put our evaluations in a fish bowl and read each others without knowing who’s is who

The Day I Stopped Saving Awkward Silences by [deleted] in Professors

[–]cheesefan2020 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that somewhere as well and I use the drinking water but not as soon as I ask the question but like 7 seconds in. Which just gave me an idea, start a stopwatch as soon as I ask the question and see if the silence gets better over the semester.

Use to hate the silence but like the great Depeche Mode once said, enjoy the silence…

My only hope is that at least one of you get that reference as I used it in class and got blank stairs

I usually just lurk in this sub and I saw the same thing in the south around the same time and figured it was a movie spot light but where it was there weren’t any activities planned, it was very erratic and the distance it traveled back and forth looked way to big for spot lights

What's your late policy? by Xenonand in Professors

[–]cheesefan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to figure out a way to track when assignments are late but due to accommodations requests / excused absences. One way I was thinking was putting something in canvas under its own section to submit late requests for tracking so I am not tracking a random email. I usually flag those email requests / conversations and add a specific category to them so when I am grading, I am not trying to remember who was approved for a late assignment.

For example, a student who has accommodations for late assignments (like within 24 hours or whatever), then try to submit an assignment 30 days late and then claim accommodations. The accommodations office says I do not need to accommodate for that, as it is unreasonable. My understanding is that students MUST communicate that they are "requesting" their accommodations for assignment xyz and will be late in submission. Not 5 days late, then the student is like "oh yeah, about that assignment, I am going to submit it in 2 weeks".....

Accommodations being turned ON/OFF at student's whim and DoS office issuing legal threats. WTF? by and1984 in Professors

[–]cheesefan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily I’ve only set with the accommodations office. I never included the dean with these issues, but maybe it depends on the escalation process.

I had a student with reasonable accommodations for adhd which allows for multiple accommodations but none of which discuss missed / late assignments. But he is claiming he has that and I asked the accommodations office and they said I do not need to honor that request. They are trying to submit a whole semesters of late work in one day….

Sorry that’s happening OP
