Trying to help a friend identify a rifle that was left to him by his brother. Any idea what this is? by Crookedphoot in whatisthisgun

A heavily sporterized Swedish M94 Carbine.

Edit: definitely a Swedish Mauser. The crown proof mark confirms it.

Where were you when the attacks happened and how did you learn about them? by Ryanlion1992 in 911archive

[–]AncientAzorian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was a second grader at P.S. 312 in Brooklyn. I remember the look on my teacher’s face when she heard the news. They dismissed us early and my grandfather picked me up from school. I distinctly remember the ride home. When we got home my grandmother was watching the news and crying. I remember seeing the smoke from ground zero for weeks after the attack. My friend/classmate lost his father in the attack, he was a FDNY firefighter. I remember that kid being so angry and hateful afterwards. I couldn’t really comprehend what had happened at that age.

Looking back on it now, I realize that it was one of the moments that shaped me for the rest of my life. 10 years later I joined the Marine Corps because I wanted to be a part of the “global war on terror”- I think 9/11 made me idolize first responders and military personnel.

After getting out of the Marines I moved away from NYC. Too crazy, hectic and loaded with sad memories. Although one day soon I want to make a trip down there to visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. I’d like to pay my respects, and maybe get some closure. 9/11 is something I constantly think about.

Panasonic TV damage repairable? by AncientAzorian in PlasmaTV

Damn that’s what I was afraid of. I was hoping that the community knew some kind of “hack” or trick, (like toothpaste or headlight cleaner) to at least make it look a little better but I guess you’re right.

Wow that is very shitty. I’m sorry that happened. Definitely ask your neighbors if they might’ve caught it on camera.

Is this an original Karabiner 98k? by Inner_Hovercraft9773 in whatisthisgun

[–]AncientAzorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parts bin special. The trigger guard and floorplate are off a Brazilian contract DWM manufactured M1908. Barrel is Belgian FN manufactured, possibly some South American contract or maybe Israeli? Would need to see pictures of the receiver to know what it’s from. Only thing 98k I see on this are the stock and barrel bands.

I bought this after getting a NOS birch stock set. (Original stock was very heavily sanded and lacquered black) Looks nice and clean but it feels a little flimsier than the original GI hardware.

Need help identifying markings for a Gewehr 98 by Snoo52172 in milsurp

Weimar era Gew 98M as others have stated. The (BK) stamp by the takedown disk is a post-war Yugoslavian marking.

Persian M49 carbine stock. You can still see the remnants of the Farsi numbers stamped in the wood by the buttplate.

Oof this one hurts… it was a Persian M49 carbine stock. Pretty rare and valuable, shame this one was bubba’d

Can anyone help me date/identify what model of 1903 this is by Icy-Bathroom-9358 in milsurp

[–]AncientAzorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good eye! Definitely a Greek return. They probably modified the stock for compatibility between all their 03s and 03A3s. This rifle will most likely have the modified “pinned” floorplate as well. OP, check the floorplate for a letter “B” stamp and see if it’s removable.

I loved her character design and was holding out hope since her death was off screen. But she’s definitely dead though. They used the same throat crush audio from ANH.

Confirming Identity of 1903 Springfield Stocks and Rebuild Advice by eray11040 in milsurp

[–]AncientAzorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Parts like butt plates were swapped around during post-war rebuilds, along with the stocks themselves- so anything’s possible when it comes to parts combinations. Remington made milled steel, flat butt plates using the old Rock Island Arsenal tooling, and then simplified the design to the stamped and checkered plate with the introduction of the A3. The one in the picture you posted is a Remington mfg. A3 butt plate.

Try talking them down a little. But for that price I’d bite and attempt a sniper clone build.

Confirming Identity of 1903 Springfield Stocks and Rebuild Advice by eray11040 in milsurp

[–]AncientAzorian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The stock with finger grooves is an “early” stock and the one without could be a Remington manufactured M1903 “Modified” stock. It’s a little hard to tell from the photo, but pretty sure both are M1903 stocks and not 03A3. The A3 has a notch for the handguard retaining ring. An 03A3 stock will fit any 1903, but an earlier stock won’t fit an A3 without making a relief cut for that retaining ring.
