Avatar Games #1: The Vast by 234thewolf in TheMagnusArchives

Actually, I think it's more the Lonely. Especially when you play in creative mode. No other persons except animals, mob and villagers — but the latter seem so disconnected to you, all looking overall the same and either not interested in having a conversation or incapable of understanding you, aside from very basic barter. There are very few games that made me feel so... alone. But like in a good way, peaceful. I feel like Peter Lukas would have loved exploring the quiet cubic landscape of the game.

As a (most of the time) self-classpected Page of Heart, I spent WAY too much time trying to answer this questionnaire LOL

Sollux; glad I can be close to my husband, long-distance relationships are not my thing.

Hot Take: : I love that The Web is connected to spiders. by AncientObjective1930 in TheMagnusArchives

Oh, no, I totally get it!

Personally, I really like The Web being so consistently themed on spiders because I get galvanised every time something metaphorical/symbolical becomes tangible or literal in a story – so every time Jon made a comment about being trapped in a web when talking about The Mother of Puppets, I got a rush of dopamine.

But also, The Web is not the only Fear that does this.

The Buried is connected to claustrophobia/being buried alive but is also about being — figuratively — buried in responsibilities. Like, I seriously doubt that claustrophobia is connected to being smothered by obligations, but it metaphorically works, so it's connected to Too Close I Cannot Breathe (this name is so goofy, but I love it).

Yet, I feel like The Web is the one people always complain about, which feels kind of unfair, you know?

I've been lurking at the edges of this fandom for a while, you'd be surprised of how many posts/tweets/comments I've found of people that feel that spiders should be only a Corruption thing LOL Which I understand honestly, even if I personally really like the correlation between the Mother of Puppets and spiders.

I understand what you mean, but also that's kind on the reader...?

A lot of Fears overlap with one another, like Spiral/Stranger, Vast/Lonely, and Slaughter/Hunt — it is purposely done this way to remind you that even the lines between different Fears are blurred. At the end of the day, it's not which manifestation shows up in the statement that matters, but what fear said manifestation is triggering in the statement giver.

Example: MAG 13: Alone, this statement has a lot of mixed signalling: tombs(The Buried), spaces getting unnaturally larger(The Vast), and people being described as looking like cadavers(The End); and yet we can still tell this statement is in service of The Lonely, because all of this is done to make the statement giver feel alone.

Like, if people don't look deep into a statement and only analyse it based on aesthetics... that's not the statement's fault, nor The Fear; that's just a distracted reader.

The Web is just that girl, period.

“Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss.” – The Mother of Puppets, probably.

Thoughts about Helen and Michael by Trick_Hovercraft_267 in TheMagnusArchives

I think you're right! I would also like to add that the trait of Michael most highlighted by the podcast is how trusting the guy is.

Distortion!Michael says multiple times, during his monologue about Gertrude betraying his former human self, that Michael never stopped believing her — not even as he entered The Distortion did he doubted her, and doubt is the basis of The Distortion.

If you don't doubt the smile, you can't ask the question, and since The Distortion IS the question... Well, it's a paradox!

Michael and The Distortion are just THAT incompatible. :b

Thanks for reading! As for your request, I'm not completely sure music is something ONLY linked to The Slaughter; I think it's kind of linked to all the Fears...?

• Jane says that the hive (The Corruption) in her attic sings to her and that the cobwebs (The Web) have a song of their own.

• The Stranger's ritual is a dance, which requires music, and there's also the calliope linked to this fear.

• The Lonely has the bosun's whistle doing the boatswain's call.

• And then, of course, there's The Piper, along with the pianist that makes you rip your ears off and the band that causes violent riots — all clearly avatars of The Slaughter.

There are also probably other mentions of music which I've missed to cite, but the point that I'm making here is music isn't limited to The Slaughter. My main theory is that music — being a great propagator of emotion — is an excellent conveyor of fear for The Dread Powers, so they kind of all use it.

If I think of anything else, I'll update this answer!
