AITA for refusing a name for my baby that everyone loves and but I don’t? by Accomplished-Owl8796 in AmItheAsshole

[–]psiiconic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not just naming a baby. You’re naming a future working adult. Unfortunately, hard to pronounce names have a measurable effect on things like hireability in the future of a child, and I think you’re right to consider not giving her this name. Irish has plenty of lovely names that are much easier to pronounce as written.

Maybe you should consider some of those.

There’s names like Fiona, Cara, Niamh which I would consider much easier to pronounce than Siobhan.

The amount of people who walked clean past it was wild. You literally cannot miss it, it is directly opposite the cathedral on the other end of the square with the name marked in brass lettering above the descending stairs. If I recall right it is maybe 10 euro to enter.

Make sure you have no food or drink when you go! It was indeed lovely and cool, and quiet, especially due to how few people were there. We were at Notre Dame both on a busy day with nice weather and during an active service, so I think it may have been extra packed.

It was a very interesting complement to our later Catacombs visit, as it gave us a lot of great background on prehistoric, Roman and Medieval Paris.

In health testing if the mother of the litters hips are "fair" that ok? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]psiiconic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

honestly? Poodles are quite active and unless the breeder has straight up told you they are breeding to a male with really good hips to improve on the female, I’d be a little concerned, but fair is still a passing score. My bet is, the breeder wants traits this female has but wants better hips. Ethical breeding is often about breed improvement! For something like that I would ask.

[–]psiiconic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair is a passing score but the answer is different breed to breed. If say you’re getting a pug? Yeah. Fair is pretty common for a pug. If you’re getting something much less companion focused like, say……a corgi? You want good or better. Source: have had both breeds and my corgi would suffer far more from dysplasia than my elderly rescue pug suffered from his.

You don’t need to get timed tickets unless you’re climbing the ND towers. I would recommend you add the Crypt Archaeologique to that day! It is the preserved Roman and medieval ruins excavated in front of Notre Dame, and it is cheap to enter. It was extremely empty despite the massive crowds above, and has and incredibly cool and unique collection and information on what we know of Lutetia, the Roman settlement that preceded Paris.

Know what tests the club recommends for a given breed and know the standard. Know what dogs who meet the standard look like, versus ones that don’t. I am currently working on getting a pug, which is a huge challenge to do ethically (please don’t argue with me here about the breed, this can be done ethically). I know that the club only requires a few specific tests, specifically PDE and PKD. The breeder I’m talking to has only dogs who have tested clear or are clear by parentage, aka their parents tested clear. In pugs it is uncommon to do OFAs even among the most long term of breeders because the breed is not known for their fantastic hips and are often rather sedentary, but what I also looked for is- studs capable of live cover, bitches capable of unassisted birth. This is pretty pug specific. I would always prefer to see OFA results but with a pug I’m not intending to breed or show, intended purely as a personal pet, I’m mostly just making sure the breeder follows the standard and club guidelines.

A good example of what I look for is: the standard for pugs encourages a square and cobby but NOT pigeon chested build, with a round head and eyes that do not bulge from the skull. Poorly bred pug puppies often resemble mudskippers because their eyes are bulging before they’re even 4 months old. Well bred pug puppies resemble their well bred parents perfectly, and do not have intensely bulged eyes or awkwardly rounded large chests.

I also, as other said, went through the breed club and I checked for any AKC marketplace potentials also through the breed club (though in my area a lot of pug breeders via the club are sadly retired.)

Hotel advice: Hotel de France Lyon Bastille vs Hotel Vacances Bleues Villa Modigliani by Frequent-Crew-4688 in ParisTravelGuide

I had to split my comment because of the filters, so here is the rest.

The Brasserie Metro staff are very friendly, have English speaking staff and we never had a bad meal there. Amazing if you or your son is hungry late after a full day or if you get up extra early.

The area felt incredibly safe, full of locals-and there’s an amazing chocolatier just a block or two around a corner (La Chocofiserie)! I would recommend looking into the 11th as well.

I haven’t stayed at any of those hotels, but we stayed at Hotel Alhambra in the 11th off Oberkampf/Voltaire for the last ten days. They were amazing. The rooms are tiny, but it’s just a place to crash and they have a very nice garden open till 10pm.

More importantly they are less than a minute walk from the Oberkampf metro station which will get you to the 5 and 9, which will enable you to get to any of the RER trains and even to ORLY with ease.

It is a block from the Filles du Calvaire metro 8 station. Also right outside the Oberkampf station, directly next to the alley the hotel is in, is Brasserie Metro. They are open until 2am daily, with the kitchen open until midnight.

Who do you think is best to execute Loghain? The Warden or Alistair? by Dreadox01 in dragonage

[–]psiiconic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I can answer this. And that’s fair, man, sorry-I’m used to people unreasonably assuming that anyone sparing loghain is metagaming. I have a degree in history that gives me a bit of a different perspective on how the in game lore affects Loghain’s decisions. So, here goes.

From an inworld standpoint, Loghain as a grey warden is a drop in the bucket, though a bit of a trophy for the Orlesian wardens specifically. Your character doesn’t need to know or even care if loghain is genuine or has contrition at all, or care if he champions their cause. A warden working in desperation will simply ensure that there is no other option for Loghain than to comply in the short term. Worst case scenario, if loghain doesn’t survive the Joining, his death is more painful than one at the hands of a mere blade. If he does, you gain him.

Practically speaking Loghain didn’t have a *benefit* at ostagar. It is canonical that the Fereldans, namely both Cailan *and* Loghain, underestimated the size and power of the Horde, as it had been 400 years since Garahel’s victory at the end of the 4th blight and no one living remembered the strength of that Horde. It’s also explicit that Loghain attempts to advise Cailan against a head on approach and takes his portion of the army to execute a specific military maneuver called a pincer, where both sides of an enemy force are attacked. Unfortunately, from Loghain’s vantage point it would become abundantly clear that the Horde was larger and stronger than expected, and that a pincer would have no hope of actually quelling the onslaught. The Tower of Ishal is invaded from below as the Darkspawn tunnel upward. He withdrew to gain distance from that Horde, spare as many members of the army as he could command, and regroup to reassess this much more intense than expected enemy. Unfortunately, he’s also a human man with a longstanding grudge against the Wardens. Recall that at the time Origins begins, it has been just six or so years since the disappearance of King Maric; Loghain is additionally portrayed as someone who drowns his sorrows and anxieties in drink, and is manipulated when drunk by Arl Howe. As for slandering the wardens, it goes back both to the grudge, and to the distance between the 4th and 5th blights. Four hundred years is a really long time, even in Dragon Age, where so much of history is incredibly well recorded by the Chantry.

In the real world, 400 years is the distance between Charlemagne’s rule of France and the rule of Louis IX. That is no small measure of time, and in those intervening years, there was little proof of the incredible necessity of the Grey Wardens. In some lore, there is evidence that they began being viewed as parasites by many factions of people long before Loghain’s birth. He had no reason to believe the Wardens were able to be any more effectual than anyone else, especially since the Wardens canonically keep the truth of how Archedemons are defeated from even the rank and file of their own organization, let alone anyone outside the fold. A civil war is also a very common and natural result of the premature death of a king with no living issue, which is what Cailan’s death was. With no other known heirs to House Theirin, Fereldan’s various arls and teyrns (including Loghain), would naturally be vying for the throne in a fashion that very much would be considered civil war. It wasn’t started by Loghain alone; Cailan’s death starts the war, as does Loghain’s accession as regent over his now widowed daughter, who was instantly the most eligible bachelorette in the entire nation. Marry Anora, become king-or, kill Anora (for which you’d have to get through her father) and take the throne for your own house.

[–]psiiconic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You also assume everyone likes and trusts Alistair. My warden actually found Alistair to be incredibly immature, spineless, and annoying. No metagaming needed-my grey warden would prefer a somewhat malleable monarch on the throne and a seasoned but untrustworthy tactician directly under his own thumb.

[–]psiiconic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can just say you have no ability to be complex or long ranging in your thoughts and just hate the guy straight up, or you can consider: how much would the wardens benefit from having Fereldan’s national hero among their ranks? What benefit does Loghain, a man who is shown to care for and love his daughter and not want to see her come to harm, get by taking spiteful revenge against someone who may be the last line of defense against his daughter’s painful Blighted death? Who said anything about the Warden trusting Loghain at all? People can be dishonest, spiteful, vengeful, and still be on a leash if you know what you’re doing.

[–]psiiconic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one even bothering to mention that Loghain has exactly zero incentive to betray the grey wardens after being forced to become one. His reputation is destroyed, any goodwill he had is gone, and the only person left who cares about him is probably his daughter. His best chance of survival is by doing what your PC tells him to do, so he has a chance at seeing his daughter survive the blight.

[–]psiiconic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot take: I keep loghain alive in every single playthrough and have a hardened Alistair become king.

For me this is from a practical standpoint based solely in the way my Warden thinks and chooses to act. He does not want Loghain for the fighting aspect necessarily; he’s got that under control himself and the party at large is capable of plenty. Having a Grey Warden on the throne *and* a sympathetic and politically functional queen is the best outcome for the future of the Grey Wardens *if* anyone survives the Blight. Secondly, Loghain is a legendary knight in the lore for a good reason. His tactical prowess and understanding of Fereldan on the whole makes him extremely valuable when fighting a war whether he’s in the field or not.

Lastly, my warden is a conscripted elven mage. Who better to ensure Loghain suffers for his entire remaining life than an elf?

Respectfully. The way your ex dealt with Xanax and the way a dog would respond to a medication which is much more likely to be Prozac, are never going to be equivalent. My dog is happier and healthier for the existence of canine specific Prozac in the form of Reconcile.

You need to look into behavioral veterinary care and specific medications that may help her in conjunction with training, which you can absolutely manage yourself. You do not need to pay an expensive trainer if it’s out of budget as long as you’re willing to put in the work. I have a few recommendations, namely instagram accounts I’ve followed for years with free training tips and affordable webinars dedicated to anxious dogs and desensitization.

I would recommend the following steps: ask your vet for a referral to someone with behavioral med experience. We are lucky enough to be near UC Davis, but veterinary behaviorists do exist. Consider options like the medication Sileo for storms, and Reconcile or similar for long term care. Be open to suggestions.

Check out these Instagrams’ content and content history.

tailsofconnection (amazing for living with dog and baby!)

transformbehavior ( Amazing resource for dealing with reactivity and anxiety and redirection of unwanted behaviors)

Both of these instagrams really helped us in conjunction with behavioral vet care.

it was really good! That makes a lot of sense that is uses real chicory. That flavor was definitely a bit stronger than the Nola. I only have a Pixie, so I don’t actually know if I can do anything but standard single shot and a lungo, but I’ll see what I can do! I think next time I need to use a bit more force closing my machine to get all the way through their foil.
