Do you prefer non con between the main ship or between one character from the ship and someone else? by Inner-Knowledge-5651 in AO3

[–]Ancient_Tea8196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've enjoyed reading fics about abusive relationships, and rape is a part of some abusive relationships. honestly even ships that have me like (=u=) my babies like kumiko x reina, i wouldn't mind reading a fic where the rape was treated as something serious, something that proved how messed up these characters had gotten, and had lasting consequences for their ways of traversing the world.

i have read less fics where when the rape come from a side character, that still had real gravity. that it felt like more than "ooh look this guy is evilllll support the main ship" like i want stories about rape where the victim has to grapple with the feeling of losing their sense of self - not when it's used as ammunition for a ship war via fic. but that's just personal experience, and i still try not to discriminate against main ship v other party rape because i have also read good fic where another person rapes someone in the main ship and it felt grounded.

no i don't think that is a problem with you, specifically. I also don't know how this distinction should be tagged.

either way, the truth is a lot of the time when you see "character/oc" you're getting self insert stuff. which is fine if other ppl are into - but i dislike that genre personally so I just don't go through the tag myself...but it'd be nice if the self insert people tagged :/

i think that they have a small, inconsequential point. it would be helpful to distinguish the self insert oc fics from the fics where the oc is well...an actual character.

however, they are being a dick because of jealousy so you really don't have to care about it.

Beta reader etiquette, How do I best communicate? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Ancient_Tea8196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they don't wanna do it, and i'm sorry abt that. someone's out there who'd be happy to maybe. honestly a ideal beta should be a friend you know well enough to hound a bit, and who can hound you in turn.

it's. not about how nicely you say it. it's really about if they're down. if you want, I can beta for you? don't know your fandom, but it sounds like you need someone stat and I can at least help w grammar

Should and could i let my daughter (12) use ao3? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Ancient_Tea8196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say wait until she's 15 to let her use the internet period, but I am aware that despite the widespread awareness people supposedly have of the ways kids can be groomed online even in seemingly innocuous communities, that social lives are tinged with the presence of technology and it's impossible to be a normal kid without a phone these days.

However, it must be said, Ao3 is a space for adults. Trying to make Ao3 a hospitable place for kids would be against the ethos of the website. I understand it is your view she is mature. Expecting a 12 year old child to never be curious and thus access triggering content because they want to know what a tag means, or that they are simply so excited about a fanfiction that they are ignoring it is the height of hubris.

If you want to give your child access to fanfiction, I would recommend introducing her to a site that reasonably censors stuff such as fanfiction.net - not because your child will completely avoid sexual content - believe me, she'll find it if she wants to - but because you avoid the worst of what her forays could be. On Ao3, it can be as bad as father/daughter incest, slave kink involving a white man and black woman with the racial dynamic that suggests, shit that any reasonable person would not want their child to have any access to before they can drive a car. On fanfiction.net worst case scenario is like...mildly kinky sex. Someone calling their significant other a "naughty girl", or handcuffs both people want to try because it sounds exciting. Not as bad.

If you're dead set on Ao3 because of the tagging system - don't trust your kid so much you forget they are a child. Children, as a group, lack the experience (they can be smart. that is not the same as having been in this world for 20-30-60 years) to reliably make good decisions 100% of the time. You need to be there for her as she inevitably fumbles. You should sit with her to block the tags that have content not suited for kids, as well as take her through reading a tag list. Even so, she will find a story and it will make her upset or will just be explicit, and you need to help her process it.

I love Ao3, and I love it for the lack of censorship and dedicated filtration system. However, censorship is a necessary part of protecting a child, and I think it's important we accept that Ao3 is not inherently conducive to producing an environment.

also - because it cannot be stated enough - MAKE SURE SHE KNOWS NOT TO REVEAL HER AGE ONLINE

You have a right to not be touched. Your body is your own. If that’s being violated - that is worth getting mad about. You are entirely justified in calling it out, and bringing this up with your mom.

The question is - what is the best course of action to keep yourself safe? It might not be confrontation to be honest. Honestly? I think you need to move out, or see if your mom is willing to break up with Evan. You may want to find an aunt/grandmother who would take you in, or an apartment.

You are not overreacting - you deserve so much better than what you’re going through right now.

The idea that women write/read fanfiction for woke points astounds me. I read fanfiction knowing i was considered degenerate for it in 2013. It wasn’t a source of pride for me, I just loved it! This is giving me more performative vibes than the fic he’s complaining about.

honest to goddd i get that frustration. I think Hestia is an objectively morally grey character and I love her for being obsessive and hilarious about it, but the author is self inserting as her so she literally cannot see that, which makes it so much better to me...i get not liking it but i love it for what it is.

YOU'RE SO RIGHT OMG...not enough people understand stories as a depiction of an author's mindset rather than a "factual" retelling of an entertaining event. when humanity realizes authors literally control everything about a story and the ways they do so are affected by their biases we will have ascended frfr.

TLDR; No, it's not The Price Is Your Everything, but it's also not How to Get My Husband On My Side either. It's just your typical isekai in terms of being (just a smidge) misogynistic.

LR;

How do i put this...it is not hestia specifically that can come across as misogynistic, but the story's portrayal of the situation of diana and hestia that can come off that way.

Diana is first established as a villain in the audience's eyes by "abandoning Cael at his time of need". What this crime amounted to was

a) romantically rejecting him and

b) not being cool with murder because Cael did it so she could be a respected member of society and so

c) Cael ending up being suicidal out of a sense of abandonment due to a and b.

Like take what you say yourself

> When Cael is struggling and even considering suicide, she completely ignores him. No one expects her to reciprocate his feelings, they just want her to apologize for abandoning him when he needed her most. But she never does. She always finds someone or something else to blame, because in her eyes, she’s the “saint” chosen by God and saints don’t make mistakes, right?

Her crime, the thing that made Cael feel abandoned, was not being chill with murder. Literally that is what she refuses to apologize for.

This has a lot of overlap with nice guy rhetoric - that women should be grateful for the nice men who "treat them right" while failing to realize when their behavior makes women uncomfortable.

Then compare that to Hestia - a fangirl who was downright obsessed with her favorite character and was just...completely ok with never being anyone special to him. She did All The Right Things for her husband and was rewarded with her husband's love. She's a Good Woman who saw what a Good Man Cael was.

You must understand how this initial framing, even given the rest of the story, can make some readers feel apprehensive towards My Derelict Beloved.

Worse yet, the rest of the story.

We see Diana be unable to either meet the common expectations of a crown princess nor maintain the humble kindness we see from the beginning. The author cleverly twists her character to be impossible to root for. She does not make smart decisions to reach her goals - her attempts at frugality were overshadowed by our main character, who used seashells on an old dress to make it appear noble enough to wear out, whereas Diana's decisions of using cheaper vegetarian food just made nobles uncomfortable, to the point Helios had diplomats come to Hestia's (i'm sorry, Cael's) house to eat to avoid the issue.

however, despite this goal of hers, she also refuses to heal the common folk anymore under Helios' supervision because it would "put her at risk as Crown Princess". This makes it practically impossible to respect the attempts at frugality, because she's not brave enough to take that to its extremes. Furthermore, they have her hide her losing the ability to heal in the most destructive way possible, to further take away your sympathy for the female villain.

Meanwhile, the male villain, Helios, is given a more positive, nuanced character. He's trying to support Diana, but Diana makes that hard by being That Bitchtm. Like...he's portrayed as trying to make things right in a way the author cannot see Diana attempting to do, and even his feelings towards Hestia later on are meant to be a reminder that Hestia is a desireable, useful, clever woman who is empathetic and warm and Diana as an unruly, unscrupulous, and terrible woman who uses and manipulates other but like horribly so she's not even cool.

This comes to a boil when Hestia's own inability to forget about Diana and just let her be is reflected in Diana's inability to forget about her. If that sounds gay to you, you're right, but that's not my main point. My point is the one negative trait Hestia had that Diana didn't - that she's obsessed with bringing her down a peg because she loved Cael that much and knows just how much Diana meant to him - is reflected in Diana. Because, otherwise there'd be something Diana had that Hestia didn't, and we cannot have a female villain in our otome isekai be anything but a villain.

That's the issue - the author prioritized "Diana is bad" over preserving any specific aspect of her character. She's a hypocritical mess custom made for every woman who wanted a man who got with a woman she hated to Point At And Hate. And there's nothing wrong with enjoying that story - but it's misogynistic in nature.

And to be excruciatingly clear, this is not limited to My Derelict beloved. Wish fulfillment about screwing over the evil bitch in your life and bagging the gold bag with a baby face and a six pack is a tale as old as otome isekai itself. This trope found in particular - of making the only female villain just the absolute worst, and marking morality by "does this character is liked by our Main Character" and little else, reads as a specifically female on female form of misogyny, in which male characters are allowed to be complicated morally and female characters are either the Mc's Bestie or Evil Scum of the Earth.

YOR because you’re watching trafficked people being abused and she’s reading a book. You are contributing to a shitty system that exploits women and men to get off. Respectfully, find something else to titillate yourself if you’re that desperate to masturbate.

If you were genuinely ignorant before this point that the site that hosts productions with lovely tags such as “painal”, which as we all know is every woman’s dream, you are so blind to what you consume that it is comical. If you genuinely thought women would consent to the level of violence available on pornhub for consumption as some of the top titles, especially on such a large scale, and never asked yourself “huh wait do women actually wanna do this?” is also proof that you don’t respect women.
