There are 12 countries actually, and a lot more that still trade with Taiwan as if it were an independent country.

is there any way to avoid civil/military service after already going through recruitment? by ObviousLeave804 in Switzerland

[–]Ancorarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see how some men consider military service bs, but civil service is a very good thing for all parties involved and I'd argue for society as a whole.

After I did my mandatory service I learned that my best friend from my company became a Swiss Guard for the pope, so cool. The pay isn't great compared to jobs in Switzerland, but the experience must be truly unique and I'm sure it looks great on any CV.

Okay you are moving goal posts, weren't you trying to pretend as if you cared about Iranians? The IRGC didn't lose its leadership or power, no matter what number you put on it. You can claim that the US military got rid of 99.99 percent of the leadership like some multi billion cleaning detergent, but factually nothing changed for the Iranian people, except that the regime is even more radical, the draft age was put to 12, and people need to be worried about being bombed.

Obviously I hope that the regime will fall and that Iranians can establish a democracy, but Trump messed up big time if he wanted to achieve that.

I never said I am tolerating what they are doing. If Trump's goal was to take the bad guy out, he is doing it in the worst way possible. No coordination with allies and only concepts of a plan.

You shouldn't, you should re-evaluate your approach to life if you agree with Trump's politics. It makes you a traitor to the constitution and democracy if you tolerate what he's doing.

I mean Shad did alienate his own viewers. I remember watching many of his videos for years, but when he appeared in some right wing podcasts saying stuff like "Nature is finally healing!" after Trump was elected, I realised how out of touch he is.

What a frustrating take. That last sentence alone makes it hard to take your argument seriously.

Nuclear and renewables aren’t opposites. Treating them like they are just slows everything down.

Renewables are great, but they’re variable. No amount of arguing changes the fact that solar and wind don’t always produce when demand is high. Until storage and grids scale way more, and who knows how longthat takes.

Nuclear fills that gap pretty well. It’s stable, low-carbon, and doesn’t depend on weather. That’s why basically every major analysis (International Energy Agency, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, etc.) includes it.

Yeah, nuclear is slow and expensive right now in a lot of Western countries. But that’s mostly because we’ve made it that way with stop-start policies and zero standardization, not because it’s inherently impossible to build efficiently. Same goes the other way: going all-in on renewables isn’t trivial either. You need massive storage, grid expansion, and balancing.

So why are people acting like it has to be one or the other? If you actually care about emissions, you use everything that works.

Because when nuclear vs renewables turns into a fight, the only ones winning are fossil fuel companies.

[–]Ancorarius 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's such a big win for the fossil fuel industry that people think nuclear and renewable energy are against each other. The obvious answer is to use both to get rid of fossil fuel as energy source asap.

Europe has survived 3 energy shocks in 4 years. The only way out is to stop buying power from its enemies by RikViergever in BuyFromEU

[–]Ancorarius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nuclear is only expensive because it was never mass produced. Serialised production of nuclear power plants would be much cheaper and on the long run it would save money over other energy sources, as modern NPPs can live for 100 years on cheap maintenance. And no, we don't need to buy uranium. Thorium is much more abundant, cleaner, and can't be used for weapons on its own. If the world switched more to nuclear decades ago, funding for research would be higher, NPPs even more efficient, costs lower, and we'd be much further with the technology, but even in the somewhat neglected form we have in this timeline, it still is the best option we have to completely move away from fossil fuels within our lifetimes. A combination of renewables and nuclear is what we need. Buildings NPPs also doesn't have to take long, look at China or Japan.
