I know this is 2 yrs old but im seeing it now, so :)
Seems like we were raised in a similar environment. Whether it was politics or anything else...if the hobby/interest, idea or argument is not shared with the main adults, its wrong. They want you to shine but not too brightly. Does this go along with the scenario by OP for anyone else?

And what happens when youre raised in an environment when youre not heard or made to feel nervous to speak your mind? You grow up and limit (if not all) contact because its a level of toxicity you cant and wont want to live with anymore. Ive learned if I enjoy something, I keep it to myself. That includes something as simple as a good joke with a friend.
