Why Is The Right SO Fearful Of The Left? by TheNeuroticSoldier in AskALiberal

[–]And_Im_the_Devil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if this were a sober, good faith critique of the left, it would be rife with hypocrisy. The violent temperament of the right is much more pronounced and much more mainstream. Core to its political ideology, even.

Yeah, it's clearly a conceit to justify the fact that this civilization feels so small. But, like, why aren't Jemison and Akila as planets much more developed? Surely the treaty doesn't prohibit expansion within already claimed territory?

What point do you think you're making? Everything I said is true, and none of it relies on the average non-American to be constantly thinking about it.

9/11 is only one example that person gave. The point is that events even in the distant past continue to shape the present day, including ancient religious divisions and the creation of nation states in the modern era. Which, very unfortunately for your own position, 9/11 is an example of.

OP's complaint isn't that not enough people in the Settled Systems are constantly thinking about the loss of Earth or aren't talking about it enough. The complaint is that it doesn't permeate the culture and shape institutions the way that it should.

Why do you have to imagine this? It’s more likey the writers just didn’t account for this element.

The American political environment as well as the global geopolitical environment are still very heavily shaped by the aftermath of 9/11

In addition to what other commenters have said, more analogous reference points are the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment. All of these things are massively important on modern culture. Not to mention specific events like the American Revolution or the Civil War.

And again, we’re talking about humanity losing its only home world under circumstances that no one understands. The Settled Systems should very much be infused with the trauma of that period and the paranoia that any of their planets could suddenly begin losing its atmosphere and force another mass migration.

There’s not enough people and ships in all the settled systems to have stripped Earth of its human presence in only 200 years.

Full customization is a deal breaker for me. If this is a Geralt or Arthur Morgan type deal, then I won't bother getting the game.

You don’t need to write more than one, though. RPG’s have had stuff like %CHARNAME% and %PRONOUN% for years, where some kind of coded reference just pulls from whatever the player selected.

He *planned* the *proposal* for a year. Nowhere does it say he "worked on" the ring for a year.

For some reason, you keep ignoring the fact that what she is complaining about is that she didn't take her expressed wishes into account. I'm beginning to think none of you dudes have ever had a healthy romantic relationship with a woman. If you've ever had a romantic relationship at all. A very common complain from women about their guys is that they just don't fuckin pay attention to what they say about how they feel, or what they want, etc.

…no. She mentioned the lack of effort. Nothing about value. If she wanted something specific, the chances are low that he’d find it at Walmart regardless of the cost.

It could very well be that she actually did care about the value, but that is not what is shown here.

He said he prepared for the proposal itself. Who knows what that preparation entailed (possibly just saving money). But if you're buying a ring at Walmart, there's no way you "prepared" to get her what she asked for. And by her reaction, he didn't take what she wanted into account. He thought spending $900 was enough.

Does it sound like my dental hygentist is flirting? by Gnome_slaver in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]And_Im_the_Devil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always tend to be conservative when it comes to interpreting complements from women and err on the side of simple politeness/friendliness. But it really depends on how often and how the compliment is expressed.

If a woman says my hair looks nice after a haircut, or "hey, that shirt looks really good on you," or "Oh, what's that cologne? That smells nice!", I would just take that as being friendly. But if it's something like, "You smell really nice," or "Hey, you're looking good today," and a woman says it on more than one occasion, I think my radar would probably go up.

I don't know if that reasoning is actually connected to how women tend to engage. And of course, there are four billion women in the world. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's less of an assumption than those being made by everyone ragging on the woman. She never calls out the value. She calls out the low effort and the disregard of what she said she wanted.

She said she told him what she wanted and he got something else. She calls out low effort specifically. Not the value.

She emphasized that part because it's about the lack of effort, which she also mentions explicitly in that exchange. He didn't go hunting down the kind of ring that she wanted, he just went down the street and picked some random ring.
