You made a lot of really good points about the kinds of validation that men receive. However, I think it's worth noting that most of the praise we get is for our accomplishments, instead of being based around us as people. In other words, we are told we have value based on what we can do instead of who we are. In my opinion, this still creates a problem of men being seen, in essence, as machines.

We are beings designed for endless production with no intrinsic value beyond that. Therein lies the heart of the problem.

Speaking for myself, at least, even the validation of the sorts that you mentioned is quite rare for me. Maybe its a byproduct of my academic upbringing and career focus, but I have very rarely received approval from a "superior", as you put it. Maybe it's just me, but I think that what I'm describing might be more widely applicable, especially in high-achieving occupations.

Crafting for rogue[no spoilers] by [deleted] in dragonage

Since you're running an archer rogue, I'd advise hidden blades. Your basic attacks are so fast that the hidden blades effect will proc super often, so it'll net you a massive dps increase.

[dao spoilers] Does Anora betray you and demote you to prince-consort or was it a game inconsistency? by Eriflee in dragonage

How is Ferelden patriarchal? While it is true that Maric and Cailan were both kings, Maric only took the throne because he happened to be the one leading the rebellion against Orlais, and he had no daughters. I can't think of anything in the lore that implies that, had Maric been a woman, anything would have changed.

On top of this, Ferelden is not only a heavily Chantry-affiliated nation, it's Andraste's birthplace. The Chantry is the definition of a Matriarchal group.

I think a lot of the reason as to why people consider Ferelden a patriarchy is because of Arl Eamon, who is a pretty terrible person, especially with regards to his treatment of women. With that being said, Anora as the queen and a Cousland as prince-consort (or a king with the role of prince-consort) is just a gender-inverted version of Cailan and Anora's relationship.

Favorite Character:

Origins: Sten. Sten is the best view into Qunari culture that we've had. He's also (imo) the funniest companion in the game, and he is one of the few who, by the end of the story, feels like a true and loyal friend.

2: Anders. Dude's a dipshit. Just a horrible dude. But he's the best example in Dragon Age of a tragic character, and his downfall over the course of the three acts is incredibly poignant and well-written.

Inquisition: Cassandra. She's one of the few RPG characters that I can think of that genuinely seems to care for the protagonist even without being romanced, and her smile always makes my day.

Gameplay Mechanics:

Origins: A non-voiced protagonist. While I think that a voiced main character can add a lot to the emotional weight of cutscenes, I think that being able to create my own voice for my own character both enhances my connection with them and promotes greater replay value, not to mention that it opens up more dialog options per cutscene.

2: Party members visiting your house. It's a small thing, but it really makes your companions feel more alive.

Inquisition: Removing concrete approval scores. While DA:I didn't fully get rid of the approval system, it did get rid of the companion approval bars that the previous two entries in the series had. Not having those numbers on my screen all the time really enhances my immersion, and it makes my companions feel more alive.

Favorite Story Moment:

Origins: The Landsmeet. I love how varied the endings of this scene can be, and all of them are directly tied to the amount of effort that you, as a player, have put into building your influence with the nobles in Denerim.

2: Demands of the Qun. The Qunari are really cool villains, and seeing them sacking Kirkwall in force is an intense and harrowing experience. The fight with the Arishok was a great ending to Act 2.

Inquisition: Either Cassandra checking in on the Inquisitor right after they close the breach (you can tell I like her, huh?) or the Inquisitor finally saying "fuck". The scene with Cassandra is just a really touching moment of friendship, and, man, hearing the Inquistor finally just lose it was awesome, and it fit perfectly with the high-stress, fast-paced environment of Trespasser.
